Gents, let's try and make sure that we make this happen.

Griff, would you be so kind as to transfer your format suggestions and possible attendees into here?

Si.

Dear All,

Early days, so let's focus purely on a social, plugging get together later this month (weather permitting) and we can talk about future "events" when we are sat around a bar somewhere.

Dates: I need to know your availability so we can include as many people as possible - I know that whatever dates we choose, some people will be unable to attend, but we'll do our best to please the majority. My initial thoughts would be 24th (Saturday) or 25th (sunday) of October but I haven't looked at tides yet (I guess they'll be small?). Also this is the start of half term so is that a good or bad thing?

Location: I was thinking South Pembs rather than Cardigan Bay but I am open to suggestions. I don't have many personally proven marks down there, but I am sure we can come up with some likely spots if we try hard enough and get our heads together.

Format: Purely social and informal, no competition, prizes, money to be exchanged in any way. I suggest we find a location to meet for coffee/breakfast in the morning. Allocate/choose marks or beaches to fish and reconvene later at a pub. Catch & release lure fishing, shore only, lots of photos and swapping of skills/ideas.

Numbers: No need for any strict limits, simply what is practical to organise via the forums and actually find half decent spots for to fish on the day (one or two spots would really only accomodate a couple of anglers but I guess we can make it a mobile thing where you can fish wherever you like and as many spots as you like).

I know some of you have confirmed already, but please send a reply (without quoting) to this thread if you are interested. If you need different dates, let me know as we may move if required.

I'm off to bed but will coordinate this with some help (LewisMan you just volunteered :rtfm:!).

I couldnt make the initial meet bud would love to come to the big meet next year. Even if its just to talk turkey and go and throw some plastic together, it would be grat to meet some of you. Wales is a beautiful place it wouild be a great little break, and the no pressure, keep it simple and no prizes is so refreshing to be honest.

I think that this comment by Mick could be something that we hang on to. If we keep the Meet in this type of spirit, there are a couple of key benefits . . .

1) It'll be easier to organise, and therefore more likely to happen.

2) It'll attract the right sort of people.

btw - if it is the 24th or 25th, i'm in !!!

Griff - we may need to do a couple of reconnaissance missions :whistling i'm sure that softie volunteered to help with that 'chore' too :spiteful:

Agreed, Si. I think we should head down to Tenby this weekend and find a cafe or similar to meet up at, and then check access to a few marks. Anyone know of a Little Chef or somehing locally? I'll call you later in the week to discuss. Also, we could do with finding a pub that is easy to access so we can have a chat after fishing. What are we looking at - 6 hours fishing session or so followed by a chat and social gathering?

Maybe meet around 9am, set off 10am, fish to 4-5pm then get together for as long as individuals wish? As some of you know, I don't do so well with the "dawn raids" and we need to give those travelling from further afield a fighting chance. I'll do more in this later in the week, but I have to get some work done now!

I was thinking of the same thing. Meet at Tenby, bite to eat and then with everyone having transport, the list of possible marks would be huge ! Make it a rover and give people the opportunity to do some homework and it might throw up some new marks. That's not to stop you doing your own trip to the area to sus things first though ! Then back to Tenby for a pint and a chat....:yeah:

I would love to attend but the dates are not suitable for me, reckon I would need a date at least 3 weeks later.

We are on the same page then - I needed to check the general idea but if you are in agreement I'll start pinging PMs about later in the week to all who have expressed an interest, encouraging everyone to do some research ahead of time. As long as you all promise to share the marks you find with me :whistling so I can look after them while you are away...
Looks like we would be fishing a falling tide: high around 10:30am, low about 5pm, so we could fish a whole tide before reconvening. So far, Saturday 24th is looking favourable. May be better that way if people are coming any distance, and they can even consider staying over?

Tom,
I hope we are still fishing and catching by the time you are mobile. If so, I will take you to the "other" mark I have been fishing with George, rather than where we normally fish (if you like?).

I'll be Google-Earth'ing it tonight, as well as looking through some other material i've got (books, maps, etc...).

I still like the idea of a reckie this wkend though. Probably better to wait another day or so to see the forecast first, then i'll be firming something up - anyone who wants to come along, let me know. The more the merrier.

How far west or east of tenby were you thinking of going? As we seen on this forum there some productive marks close by but have to be carefull we don't end up same place!!!!:g: there's plenty of coast there which could be picked out of a hat:)

Count me in for sat as I will be in caravan in penally other side of tenby.

06-10-2009, 15:28
No real restrictions on location, just seemed that Tenby was as good a place as any to meet up (this can be changed if a better location can be suggested). This is not a competition so there are no rules as such. As far as individuals care to travel I guess? I think the meet-ups at the beginning and end of the day are the main thing.

Can anyone genuinely interested in attending please PM me so I can get your details and keep you posted on how this develops. If you have commented on this or the previous thread already I should have sent you a PM. If there are others you think are interested, please contact them and get them to let me know - this is not a closed event, just a meet-up of WSF'ers in West Wales. I am happy to coordinate arrangements as otherwise it will just be another good idea that never got acted on  Where you fish on the day is down to you :fishing1:

I think Pembrokeshire should be big enough for a few lure fishermen to be able to get away from each other, if they want to ! If you turn up at a spot and someone's beaten you to it, try around the next corner and see what you find, or have a backup spot at the ready. I can see a few people rushing their breakfast !! Lucky low's not till late !! It maybe an idea to set a start and finish time for fishing, to give everyone a chance to get to and back from their chosen spots :fishing1:

If your going to Tenby this weekend on a recce it might be worth going into Tenby market. You have a cafe where you can get a breckie and opposite is Tenby Angling, the bloke forgotten his name is very helpfull when I've been in before and may give you a few pointers.

Still working on getting the day off, FPO wont be too impressed with me away the week before but you know its gotta be done:whistling.

Thats good to hear, he should be keen to get us lure danglers to some fish then if theres a hope of us returning for some lures at some point. Think I had a few sidewinders off him last time I went in. He's got a photo in there of a monster bass he caught at Ginst point, cant remember the weight but it was huge, caught on fresh Razor if I remember right. And you gotta love it being about 6 foot from a cafe table and a fat mug of tea:wiggle:

Isn't parking a bit of an issue in Tenby town centre though, (especially if we decide to meet in the market) as we used to have to park on the hill (near the burnt out building on the sea front) when we used to go there to pump worm,, which is a fair old trek from the town centre?

just a thought, but seeing that most vehicles will have alot of expensive tackle left in them, it might be best to meet up somewhere where we can see the cars, Marc..

You right Parkings not great for getting really close to the centre of town unless you park in the one next to the supermarket, I normally park at the bottom of the hill, its only about 10min walk up and resonable £1.50 for the day. Just mentioned it as I thought it might be handy for Tim if hes going to recce it first.

Marc, fair point. I haven't actually been into Tenby town centre so don't know how practical my suggestion is. I am anticipating we would only be there for breakfast and a quick chat then off fishing with an evening meet at a pub elsewhere. I'm open to suggestions on this guys - let me know and I'll check it out at the weekend.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. We aren't getting competitive about this though, are we? :bangin:

Regarding weather and swell, I will keep an eye on Magic Seaweed.com which seems good for this area. If it's a complete no-no we can reschedule or head north?

chaps, there is car park above north beach where the buses park and there is some cafe there but not sure what its like. This car park is some 10 mins walk to market. There is a multi store car park next to sainsbury and loads of other smaller ones but think it could be half term so if weather good it could be busy.

We have had some good sunday lunch /food in a place in Amroth (just outside tenby) the cartwheel, doesn't look much from outside but plently of room inside for tables of 20 +, (Tim check it out over weekend, it 2nd pub on left hand side when you come down hill from tenby way. with large car park not far away.Just a suggestion,

Yeah, good thinking Andy,, its ideal for recce purposes,,

Isn't there a transport type cafe on the main route into Tenby?, i'm sure we popped in there a couple of years ago, and if i remember correctly, it has its own carpark, and does a mean full breakfast at a very reasonable price.. Marc.

I'll look out for the cafe on the way in on the weekend - Lewisman and me will be doing some orientation and checking access to potential marks in the vicinity. I do think that if we can suss the parking it would be good to get into Tenby and the tackleshop? We won't be there for hours and will probably be away fishing before it gets too busy I would think?

I'm not sure how Photogenic a bunch we are for the papers, but the RNLI idea is the very same one I just suggested to LewisMan. It would give something back and a bit of purpose to the whole thing. I am already a member and pay a subscription, so a donation from each angler may be a very good idea.

Gents,

As a bit of a momento of the "1st Annual Welsh Plugging Meet", how would you fancy the idea of having the option of a T-Shirt, Polo Shirt or Hoody ?

I've got some prices from a local supplier, and propose to take pre-orders, and charge it on at cost-price (i.e. non-profit).

I've PM'd Mike Thrussell Jr to ask for permission to use the WSF logo on the kit, and propose to put a bit of writing on them too.

Rough prices:

T-Shirts, £9, with large WSF logo on back, and embroidered small logo on front with txt.

Polo Shirts, £8, with embroidered small logo on front with txt.

Hoody, £12, with embroidered small logo on front with txt.

There will also be an origination cost of appx £20 in total, that i would look to spread evenly across the orders, therefore probably adding less than a £1 to the prices assuming that there is interest in it. The kit is "Fruit Of The Loom" i think, so should be decent quality.

If i can't get permission to use the WSF logo for any reason, then it'll probably be a Welsh Dragon or something - either way, i'll come up with something that looks the part.

Time is relatively short on this one for me to get everything organised. Therefore, if any of you are interested, could you please PM me with what you'd like, and an indication of sizes. I'll then collate these, get the gear designed & dish it out when we meet that morning (& take payment that morning too).

Also - any strong opinions on the base colour of the gear (Red or Navy i was thinking?)?

Turns out the flights are all to cock, the carrier won't guarantee taking our rods and the cost is mad - more than the price of a red rod for one day's fishing - and I haven't got any spare holidays to stretch out the weekend?! :wallbash:

With regards fundraising that I'm all for in general, I dont think there will be that many of us and whilst were all travelling I think we'll be itching to get the lures wet rather than doing a tour, press shots etc.

I think that the original plan keeping it a plain old meet, fishing and a chat/drink sounds best...... baa humbug:schmoll::laugh::laugh: but thats just my opinion, wont moan if the majority think otherwise.

Love the enthusiasm though, shows how bass lure fishing is growing, exciting times:yeah:

I think a whip-round for the RNLI is in order, then off fishing with our new shirts? We can always send a report and pics to the local rag for editing. All we need to do is get a group picture before we set-off.

Tom, nice touch for offering to help Paul & Mick. Be great to see them over here, but it is a big ask for just one day's fishing. If we get on well and decide to do something next year we can give them, you (and everyone else!) more notice. Maybe we'll make it a two-day event as well? This is all a bit last minute hence the simple agenda.

Spit you are a real gent. :notworthy

Unfortunately the rod issue is only the tip of the iceberg but the offer is much appreciated. If I had more hols left I would have come for a few days to make it worthwhile but I'll have to leave that to next year.

BTW the spots I fancied are your spots apparently - I had seen them on Google Earth and mentioned them to Griff. So your bass will be safe until next year at least. Not sure if my mind working like yours isn't a worry though!! LOL.

Just a quick update on the kit we're having.

I've just come back from seeing the local guy that i had the prices off, and i've seen some samples, and got a catalogue off him. I can confirm that the quality is very good - it's not cheap crap that we're having (i was concerned that the prices were suspiciously cheap - but it's just that i'm getting them at 'mates' prices due to him being a pal of someone that works with me).

I've got a full size-list if any of you are unsure (XS to 4XL all available), and there's also a full range for the kids, so for those of you that have asked for gear for the kids, that's not a problem at all. There are also loads of other options for gear, but i think it'll probably be easier on this occassion to stick to the 3 options already indicated.

The only slight issue, is that whilst the T-Shirts & Polo Shirts are available in Red, the Hoodies are only available in Black, Navy, Royal Blue or Grey. There are cheaper Hoodies available in Red, but i think we'll be better-off with the better quality, and going for either Navy or Royal Blue, and sticking to Red in the T-Shirts & Polo's.

No major updates. Got a good list of gear that people have requested. I'll be looking to get final confirmation off everyone on the gear that they want over the next couple of days, then look to place the order (and firm up the price) early next week (Mon/Tue).

After meeting the guy today, im pretty confident that we'll have no issues.

I'll try and get a look at the grey for the hoodies, and then if it looks ok (cause some Grey's are pants) then we'll go with the grey with red logo/writing.

We need to start to think about a meeting place for the morning & evening.

I know that Griff_ has a place in mind - does anyone else have any suggestions to throw into the pot before we firm up?

Criteria would seem to be . . . .

1) Easy to find.
2) 'Ideally' same place for morning & evening (so, somewhere that'll do us Bacon-Butties & a pint).
3) Good secure parking as we'll all have monies-worth of gear in the cars.
4) Somewhere between St. Clears & Tenby?

If you know anywhere guys, let us know.

The cafe/breakfast stop that was mentioned earlier is in Llanddowror...its about 3 miles after St Clears on the left hand side. Its like a transport cafe...carpark is outside but not visisble from the cafe(for those concerned with Red rods!!).

There used to be one further on the right(The Old Mill) but thats closed down.

As for the Cartwheel in Amroth.....you'll need to double check what time its open...think it may be later than 9. Although if you confirmed numbers they may open earlier?

Unfortunately, after a couple of PM's to try and get permission, i didnt get a reply. I was gonna just chance it and use the WSF logo anyway, but i had a 'sensible' moment, and decided not to.

So, it's all generic 'Welsh' logo's (sorry Griff) for the gear, which is being made as we speak.

Okay guys, here are the details:
Meet 9am Saturday 24th October at the Wisemans Bridge Inn, Wisemans Bridge, South Pembrokeshire. Wisemans Bridge is clearly signed from the A477 Pembroke Dock/Tenby road, between Llanteg and Saundersfoot. Follow the signs, go through Sunny Hill and come down to the bottom of the hill (narrow lanes - beware!) where the pub will be on your left. Plenty of FREE off-road parking on either side of the road right by the beach.
The pub will be open from 9am and we can use the bar area for a chat and look at maps etc, and they will have tea & coffee for purchase and hopefully bacon rolls.
I suggest we head off to our chosen marks in groups by 10am and fish as long as you choose, returning to the pub when you are done. They serve food from 6pm so there is the chance to stop and have a good chat afterwards.
For those unfamiliar to the area we will be able to offer suggestions on marks that will be fishable in the prevailing weather, but will not have personal experience on all of them. Can I suggest you all have a look at maps, reference books, google earth etc before coming down? Nearest Tackle Shop is in Tenby (I've not been there myself), but hopefully you will all have your own gear.
I hate to be boring but please note:
You are all responsible for your own safety and if bringing youngsters please take extra care. I would suggest I keep a register of contact numbers for everyone just in case (i'll take these on the day).
This is purely a social meet and no entry fees or registration are required. Consequently there are no prizes or rewards but please do take photos of any fish to share with us!
I would kindly request that we fish on a Catch-and-Release basis so we do not impact local stocks too much (I have to fish here when you have all gone ).
If you have ordered T-shirts etc from LewisMan please ensure you have payment for him on the day as he has organised this at his own expense and at cost price.
I aim to PM everyone who has expressed an interest through the course of the week. If you could confirm attendance (just so we don't wait for you to arrive if you aren't coming) and PM me if you want more details. I see no need to limit numbers, so if you want to join us, just let me know.
See you on the 24th - Tim.

Must've been a hard job reccy'ing all those pubs (10 or 12 wasnt it???:spiteful::drunk:!!!!) Just joking of course!! Nice arrangements - very sociable, which is the goal of the day, and Luke & I will be there :victory:.

On Tim's point of anyone bringing kids along, Luke will be with me, he's 8 (as of today!!), and he and I have fished quite a few of the venues down there over the past few weeks, and there are some that are very safe and suitable for youngsters - again, we can have a chat about that when we meet in the morning, and 'advice' on those marks will be available . . .alternatively, just tag along with us !!

See you all on Saturday morning (and again at 6pm for a pint hopefully !!).

That and the promise of 20+ hairy-ar*ed and thirsty plug fishermen to feed and water in the evening! I think they do B&B anyhow so have staff in to open up.

Tides are good - medium sized and we can fish from high water right down (less risk of being cut-off on unfamiliar marks) , and even the start of the flood. Depends on how committed people are!

Discovered that i work just a few miles from the Shimano Service Centre in Felindre :victory:!! So, dropped the Technium in for a service today, and should be getting it back on Thursday :yahoo:. So, that should be tip-top :kissing:

Rod is clean. Need to select my lures for the day - that can wait until Friday evening, as some will be weather-dependant. Bass grabber is clean & lubricated. Should probably give my foreceps a clean down & lubrication. Need to remember to charge my digicam.

It's all about the weather now!! That'll dictate specific marks for Saturday - OS Map ready, and weather being monitored (not that they have a clue beyond tomorrow )!!

Si, whats the cost for a service?

Honest answer . . not entirely sure. I noticed some roughness on the last couple of outings. Awesome guys there - sorted me out F.O.C !! Now that's what i call service. I think that they could see that it was relatively new (only bought in around March), well looked after kit, and so sorted me accordingly. Also, they turn it around very quickly (48hrs).

They have a website, if you do a search for Shimano Felindre, and from memory, i think that it's about 8 - £10 per hour labour - but cant imagine these boys taking long to do a job, as that's all they do.

Lovely spot they are in too . . . out in the sticks !!!

Mosseydog, I got my stradic back from them the other week......after a new set up gears/shaft (basically all the innards!) and they only charged me £21 :punk:

If i'm honest, i'm a little nervous there . . . . . . the postal strikes slowed down the delivery of the base garments, which has slowed down the embroidery . . . . . it's gonna be touch-and-go !!!! Until we know who braves the weather, it's hard to be sure, but I am expecting at least twenty of us tomorrow morning. Should be a nice mixed group and we can discuss what marks and what groups to fish in when we get there. I am hoping some of the more experienced guys will be happy to take a couple of less experienced guys with them, just so they get a chance to be somewhere sensible and have a chance of a fish.
The weather is the big challenge - if only we could swap today for tomorrow :wallbash:! I am half an hour away from where we are meeting and we have bright skies and absolutely zero wind right now. Bear in mind I am 600+ feet above sea level here, it must be gorgeous down at the coast.
Oh well at least we can have a beer together afterwards :drunk:

All my lures are packed, Im ready to go
Im standin here just by the door
I won’t wake-up the misses to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin, Its early morn
The Bass are waitin, I’ve got the horn
Already Im so excited, I might cry

So fish me and catch for me
Tell me that you’ll weigh-it for me
Hold me like you’ll never let me go (mind the treble)
Cause Im leavin on a Bass Meet
Don’t know when Ill be back again
Oh Bass, I love to go

There’s so many times Ive used the Zonk
So many times Ive played them in
I tell you now, they mean everything
Evry place I go, Ill think of Bass
Evry gulley i see, Ill think of Bass
When I go out, Ill take my Boga Grip

So fish me and catch for me
Tell me that you’ll weigh-it for me
Hold me like youll never let me go (mind out for the Gill Rakers!!)
cause Im leavin on a Bass Meet
Don’t know when Ill be back again
Oh Bass, i love the craic

Now the time has come to release you
One more time
Let me kiss you (Rex)
Then off you go
Ill be on my way
Dream about the ‘double’ to come
When I won’t have to knock you on the head
About the times, I lost my favourite Z-Claw

Bright and early. I wonder if you can catch a bass that weigh's more in pounds than years you are old? There is a target for you catch a double figure bass before you hit double figures.

With the fish you have caught this year, I fancy your chances young Luke.

Go get them bass:victory:

Brilliant effort chaps! Twenty two bass fishermen in West Wales in testing weather conditions - good effort! No-one cried off and we had a fair few fish between us considering the limited areas we were able to fish. I am so chuffed that so many of you made the drive down today- thanks guys. I hope you liked the ground down here and will consider fishing down this way again - whether we have a meet or just as a private trip. Let me know if you are coming - I will try and join you.
Cheers chaps for the support and let's do it all again next year (maybe twice?).
All the best and I hope to meet you all again soon - Tim.

PS Love the T-shirts (wearing mine with pride as we speak).
PPS Don't forget to put your clocks back one hour tonight!

Never fished in surf that big before it was Exhilarating, you know when your 6' 8" and the waves are exploding over your head on a couple of occasions that its a bit extreme. Funnily when the first one soaked me and I learnt that my jacket has a hood for a reason I had flashbacks of pictures that were put up of Spitfire66 in a similar situation and thought here we go I'm doing a Spitty:laugh:
Unfortunately no fish for me but wasnt far off from bagging a surfer:crazy:

You were in the right places I reckon, just one of those days. Don't worry as I blanked too! And you weren't the only one with a sore back after yesterday. I am sure you can get it lubricated with some beer

Hey Softie - glad you had a good day and can now understand why we think the area has so much potential. When was the last time you could see the bottom when fishing in more than 2 feet of water, eh? I see no reason why we can't get together again in smaller groups anytime - just PM some of us and we can go any weekends. To be fair it is probably too late in the season to do it on a full scale again this year, but I see no reason why we can't do it next year as soon as there are bass being caught regularly - best to do it before the holiday season is in full swing as some of the beaches (and that pub!) get very busy. I'm sure we'll see over here again soon - I have a couple of the marks from yesterday that I am desperate to crack. May need Iestyn's help on one or two!:victory:
Keep in touch and wear the hoodie with pride!

Actually Tim, it was the last time I blanked!! Generally, our Gower water is slightly coloured much due to the lack of clean ground on the marks we fish I expect! Remeber, the bass like the dark ground, not the light ground!

We'll meet up again before the supposed 'end' on the season I guess.....but on marks with shallower water maybe :kissing:

Griff_
25-10-2009, 21:31
Softie - your end or mine, shallow or deep, clear or coloured I'd be keen to fish with you & Jeff so let's see if we can get a sesh together before we hang the rods up for the year? Was great to see the enthusiasm and energy the pair of you have for your fishing though. I was amazed when you both went clambering around that little headland yesterday at Stackpole. You nutters!

Hey Tim, that ain't nothing bud', you want to see the ground that they call home,,

its something that you could never imagine, 200 ft cliffs down to small coves with deep gulleys and "small rockpools" that are probably 10 ft deep, (which you cant see once the sea starts to foam and pushes its way back in :hammer:) also the whole terrain is like some kind of weird moonscape..:bones:

I've discovered that Simon (softie) and Jeff take hardcore Bassing to a whole different level down the gower.. :bones::crazy::bones: Marc...

softie
25-10-2009, 21:51
Tim, clambering is sometimes the only means of access to certain marks.......it keeps the crowds down!

The rods won't be hung up this year mate........I reckon bass up to 5-6lb are there all year as they are not old enough for spawning?? Caught 2lb+ fish on the plug in early Jan this year.
The only problem with winter is the prevailing SW winds and swells :(

Thanks again for a great day

if i can i will!!! no problems. As i said to Si, Manorbier is an awesome spot in the right conditions with good average size to the fish, met a guy down there earlier this year (he`s on here, John-Dory) who fishes it regular and has had some stonking fish on crab. i think most people are put off because it has that summer/tourist vibe, and doubt anyone fishes it much and when they do they go left over the top.
