View Full Version : Where can I hire a boat trailer?

Does anyone know where you can hire a boat trailer for a day?

Maybe I should have gone to the jumble instead of travelling all the way to Weymouth with my trailer to find a knackered wheel bearing and having to come back without my new boat on Sunday.:yucky:

Now I am not going to go back with mine without renewing all four bearings and can't get that done by weekend, so anyone know where I could hire a trailer for a semi planning 18 footer?

Help would be appreciated - :secret:

Thanks for the reply Karlmore - I tried that and asked for a boat trailer first then one assistant was arranging a car transporter (which my own is) and the boss say's "you're not dunking my trailer"

And there's only one car trailer hire company around here?:g:

Try Indespension, I am sure they hire trailers for all sorts.

Indespension (http://www.indespension.com/fromparts-home.htm)

There may be a centre near you.

Contact a local Trailer repair company, they always sell trailers and often hire out as well, we have one south of Shrewsbury, so there must be one near you.

Seems like a lot of hassle to go through ---- dont understand why you don't fit new bearings , it only takes a few minutes.

Almost as cheap to buy new hubs complete with bearings, just pack with grease and slip them on.

Easy if you know what bearings are in the hubs and can take them with you.

If you can get the bearing numbers and / or trailer manufacturer and source the bearings let us know if you want a guide how to replace them.

Hi Blueskip, (+ the rest):clap3:

It's not the time changing them it's getting them off, finding out what they are, sourcing the right ones and then getting them fitted by Saturday whilst getting home after 7 every night - but hey you've shamed me into it Blueskip!

I know the hubs are from a caravan cos I had to source a spare wheel last week, tried bankfarm - the pembroke office were so helpful, was directed to th bridgend office and they used all the rules in the book to stop me hiring, a total let down and very disappointing I must say.

I have tried indespesion and will try to hire a car trailer from them for this weekend as that is going to be cheaper than actually replacing the four bearings!

And Ian, you're a star, thanks very much for trying to lend me yours - it is a shame I could not take you up on the very generous offer of help - if I can ever just please ask mate.

By the way, no trouble for me to change them, I am an engineer by trade just busy, busy and I need a definate solution for Sunday and saturday afternoon shopping for bearings is leaving it to tight, so me thinks me go the hire route?

Caravan Axles gets the alarm bells ringing here. Can you remember seeing ALCO or KNOTT on the hub caps or a green oval plate on the axles itself. If it has you are goosed, you cannot replace these bearings yourself, you need a fly press to get them out and in. Just to get the hubs off is a major job, the axle nut is torqued on to a rediculous figure and take some crackng. Another way of telling, when you tried to source a spare wheel were you looking for a 100mm PCD?

Poppajoe, if you get the number off one of the bearings, or the int & ext sizes & PM them to me, I will pick them up from Clydach Bearings, & bring them along the M4 to you, we can meet at one of the junctions & do the exchange.

Hi Jamsey,
Thats not a problem, I will jack it up with sleepers and transfer it to my trailer when I get the bearings done. It then goes on a mooring in Barry and I am in Wick so not far even if the bearings are dodgy.

Failing that I will take it down with a hired Hiab cos I get one by the hour but t go to Weymuth would have cost more then the boat!

It why I own a rickety old car trailer really, as it suffics for once a year take out but the club boat cardle - it just drops it on.

Hey thanks Blueskip, I will take you up on that, I am going out tonight to pull a hub off and get some numbers. It may not be a problem to get the bearings as I can get them from wyco etc but where do the seals come from? as these may be more specific?

Anyway I will come back to you when I have got one off.
By the way, funny you should mention Alco as the grease caps have an old fashioned "A" stamped into them, a scroll typelettering if you know what I mean.
And also the pcd is way up around 180m/m thats what was so eveident when I was looking for a wheel which is 13" by the way.

I'll be back!

A lot of trailer bearings come with a seal integral to the rear bearing, you may be lucky.

She's HOME!

Pelican is finally home after one wheel failure and an 8 hour drive - but she's now in the drive and ready for a mini re-fit - until the end of April when she will be afloat for the best of summer fishing!
Thanks to all that offered help with this post in true spirit of what the forum is and should be about,

Thank you.

Blue skies and fair seas all the way! I wish

I will post some before and after pics maybe if you think it would be interesting? a bit of a mini "Island hopper" sort of thing - however it will probably never get as much work or look as good as Ron's baby, but I will love it much the same!:clap2:
