Sea ice fishing

The last month the weather has been quite cold and stable here just south of Oslo, and the sea ice is now more than strong enough for fishing with a thickness of about 10 inches:) It's a very relaxing and exiting way of fishing, and this weekend I took my 6 year old daughter fishing on the sea ice for the first time. The fjord was packed with people, and we found a nice spot about 4-500 yards from the shore, depth about 100-120 feet.

No big fish was landed and the bite was nothing to brag about, but at least we managed to fish enough cod and whiting for a nice dinner.

We brought back home 10 whiting 1-1,5 lb and a couple of 2 lb cod. A small dab and some smaller whitings were also caught. Lost a couple of larger cods on pirk, about 6-8 lb.

Hi Havengel,
Sounds like a lovely trip,and great crisp pictures too-helps to get a feel of your day.
When you can get the children interested it adds another dimension to our sport and if it stops the frowns when you say you're going fishing then that has to be good too:)
Just out of interest: do you know of anyone over there who fish from a kayak?
I started last year and it has proved to be the best season ever,not really in the size of fish caught but the experience is much more enhanced,

m8 when i come over your gonna have to take me fishing ,the ice will be away by june but i am over in april hopefully to ice fish with the girls grandfather ,any tips and hints would be welcome m8 ,

The sea ice will probably be gone in April:unsure: , I'll hopefully get my last ice fishing trip on the sea ice this Saturday in Drammen. I'm after freshwater species on that trip:) Near the shore in that area you can get salmon, pike, perch, eel and common whitefish. If you go a further 20-30 meters out you'll get whiting, haddock, dab, cod and sea trout:) Quite funny those brackih water deltas.


In April there's still ice on some lakes and ponds, so I guess you'll have to have a go. Maybe the big pike will bite:)
