Hi everyone, my name is Lionel Korach I am a charter captain working out of the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand. I would like to expand a bit on the 3 Kings discussion. Anyone serious about catching a striped or blue marlin should defineately mark this area as a must do !!. The best time to visit these iIslands to target billfish is from late February till late May and even into June. Catching a world record striped marlin is a definate possibility, the biggest issue is securing a charter boat as they are often booked solid during the prime fishing times. Milchner was correct when he said boats follow the fish from port to port, generally as the gamefishing season winds down in the respective home ports, many of the larger charter vessels head to a place called Houhora or to Maungonui, both are great little ports, from these locations they make their way to the three kings which is about a 12 hour boat trip, and yes it can be rough !! the luck of the dice on this one because like anywhere it can also be very calm. The normal charter duration when visiting these islands is 4-5 days during which time you could likely expect to catch several marlin all things being equal. Obviously no skipper can gaurantee fish but these skippers are very good at what they do.generally if last years catch reports mean anything, most of the boats were tagging around 10-20 billfish over a 4-5 day period. Anyone wanting to actually see switch baiting in action will see first hand just how effective this method is in catching marlin. If the weather becomes to rough or you are sick of catching marlin, there are dozens of other fish species to target. Monster Kingfish, Groper, Terakihi, and giant red snapper some in excess of the majic 30lb. Anyone wanting further information on the three kings or help in organising a trip down this way, I am only to happy to help All the best Lionel
