I tried some deep fjord angling today on a new spot. I've earlier tried a lot of night fishing for rabbitfish and various sharks just nearby, but this was the first time on this special rock. At a distance of 50 yds the dept is 150 ft. 150 yds-->300 ft deep thrilling fjord!

The tide was rising when we arrived at 10.00 and was expecting to reach full tide at noon. We lost some nice fish just after we'd started, but the first hours did not bring any results. At 13.00 i caught the first one, a ling weighed in at 4 lbs. The ground was probably covered with hagfish, just look at the pictures. The baits did survive a little longer when we started to use floating beads to lift the bait off the bed. The place sure got potential, I'm gonna try the very same place on friday night, hoping for rabbitfish and sharks.

Seems like a superb place to fish. Thats nice big baits your using....looking for that monster fish? What kind of sharks do you get?

Do you get cod in these areas if so what kind of size do you expect? What about pollack and coalies on the face of the drop off?

Not that much cod, but in the summer its usual to catch pollack up to 12 lbs and sometimes even greater. This is a very good place for pollack, but not this early in spring. I've caught rabbitfish, Blackmouth catshark and velvet belly 400 yds away from where the fotos were taken. Coalies? Pollachius virens Pollock? Not very interesting, only small ones up to 3 lbs. I've actually caught most of my cods and coalies downtown Trondheim, from piers and so on. (My city) Average size from piers and shore in the wintertime: 4-12 lbs.

We tried to fish for anglerfish and wolffish too, but at 20-30 ft. No hits. Divers referred to this place as a really good hotspot for anglerfish, just 100 yds left of where i tried today. The whole shoreline is one large hotspot, but until i get any more nice cathes there, it just got potential. I'll log in when i've tried some more.

Tight lines. :boat:

:secret: So far all i know is its being pushed by the norwegians. The scottish executive has been asked to support it.The possible ferry link is to be from either kristiansund or trondheim. Kristiansund is the prefered port but our local town Dunfermline is twinned with Trondheim so that might tip the balance.:) This would then tie up with the rosyth zeebrugge link.I don't know how far north you want to go halken but trondheim is a good start. You are quite lucky in the fact that you already have a good ferry service from newcastle to bergen. I know i have already used it. Flights from bergen (flesland)to the extreme north of norway are cheap as chips so you have a great option.:)

I've tried the spot once more last night. I hoped to catch some sharks and possibly a rabbitfish tonight. It was almost as if there was an invasion of small sharks. No matter where we casted, no matter what depth we went for, there were sharks all over our baits in no-time. Both mackrell and shrimps were taken.

No biggies, but lots of the small ones. Largest blackmouth weighed 640 gram, above 1 lb. Small one for Norway. Funny for me. In total we got 20-25 velvet belly and 3 blackmouths. Often 2 and 3 in the same reel-in.
Again im sorry for the poor picture quality. I really have to buy a new cam.

I've actually caught a breiflabb (anglerfish) from shore from one of Hugo's spots in this area, november 2000, 3 oz pirk and loads of luck: 7.5 kg! Thought I was fighting a sloppy 4 lb cod, could not have been more happy to be wrong, mostly since it's a very rare catch from shore, but also since it's the best spcies of fish I've tasted so far. Two scubadivers who were about to leave offered me 500 NOK (~40-45£) for the fish, but no way! :)

How were you fishing the pirk SMS_NOR? Were you retrieving it or was it baited?

SMS_NOR

Jigging it towards shore just above the bottom in a very steep area, not baited. Don't think it really matters whether you bait the pirk or not for anglerfish, since I reckon they primarily use their vision for hunting. Concidering how they lie still on the bottom "fishing" for food, I think the only key to cathing anglerfish is getting whatever bait or lure you're using straight on top of it; pure luck in other words...
