Hi Guys

I've been hovering about the forums for a few weeks now, trying to pick up on some boat fishing tips.

I'm in Jersey, and although I've been shorefishing for 25 years on and off I've got very little boat fishing experience and need some help!!

I just bought a new Beneteau sports fisher for the summer, and i'm hoping on trying for all the usual - Bass, Turbot, Blackbream and Sole/plaice, but at the moment I haven't got the faintest idea when I comes to where to fish!

I was thinking of drifting off St Ouens for Bass/Turbot, but not too sure whether to be far out or should I be close in to shore?

There's a popular little bay on the South coast that I did a night dive on a year or two ago. It was jam packed with big sole and plaice, so when the weather gets a bit warmer, I'm hoping to anchor up and fish overnight in the bay for them.

Can anyone give me any pointers? I know most (if not all) of the local guys are very tight lipped when it comes to marks, but was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction?

BTW, does anyone know if live sandeels/Launce can be bought locally, or is it just a case of having to go out and feather for them?

Cheers for any help!

Chippy

Hi Chippy (Paul C?)

Boat marks are a closely guarded secret (never take a hand-held GPS on a charter trip!!) so it's a case of softly softly and talk to loads of people.

Re live sandeels, they are notoriously hard to keep alive, as they consume loads of oxygen and need an airated tank. If I've done a serious live-sandeel session in the past, I've either used a long bucket and changed the water very regularly, or a battery powered air pump and difuser stone (you can get them from pet shops for aquariums).

In any case, I don't think you'll be able to keep them alive for more than a couple of hours.

Good luck when the weather improves anyway. If that *is* Paul C and you want a buddy on board, let me know! (I'm bike 93!)

I Will Tell U 2 Spots Which You Can Catch Some Good Fish. 6-7 Miles Out From St Helier Ther Is A Place Called The Trench In The Summer It Can Offer Amazing Bream Fishing. Secondly A Couple Miles Of Gronez There Is A Wreck Can Offer Big Bass, Pollack And Cod Some Time. Also Echeros Are Good For Bass.

Good Luck Hope You Get A Nice Fish When You Are Out (maybe A Record)

Hey Balders, yes that's me - Paul C. As you probably guessed I won't be doing so much, if any, JMCLCC photo's this summer!!

Thanks for the tips on marks though guys. I was really after something a little closer in, but still worth considering once I've got my boating confidence/experience up. Any more accurate info on where the Trench is? Is it marked on the chart along with the Gronez wreck?

As for the aerator, I'm gonna get one of those 12v aerator pumps from IS Marine - £20 or so. I guess the only solution is to feather for the little fellas or net them at somewhere like Grouville Bay? I had a chat to Mick in the market tackle shop yesterday - he's "looking into" getting a supply of live ones.

The dive bay was St B's, but they were a very long way out, so forget fishing off the pier, I'd (if possible) climb over the rocks behind the pier and walk at least half way or so along the base of the cliff. You probably know anyway, but forget daylight - looks like a empty waste ground during daylight hours (saw a cracking bass along there on a day dive though - close in to the rocks) at night the place possitively comes alive!!

Hopefully the weather this weekend will be better - hoping to get out at least one of the days, most probably Sunday!

Hi St Brelades Pier Offers Some Good Bass I Was Fishing Down There About A Year Ago May Time And A Couple Of Guys Were Just Using Sandeel No Weight Nothing And They Had 12 Bass Biggest 10 Lbs 3oz. And There Also Offers Some Good Pollack Fishing. When You Look Out At Sea You Can See A Rock With Apole Coming Out Of A Rock About 50-70 Yards Out Cast 20 Yards More To The Right Of The Rock And Will Pick Up Some Big Plaice Sole And Bass. You Got Any Marks North Coast?

You Got Any Marks North Coast?

The only place i tend to fish on the North is Saie, on the rocks on the left of the carpark. I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to heights, so clambering down climbs isn't too good for my vertigo!

We saw most of them a little further out than that Rock with the pole, but as you say, on the right of it - more towards the moorings. We did start to dive at dusk though, so the fish were probably on their way closer in.

I took a look at the chart last night - there's a couple of wrecks quite close to each other about 2 miles out from St Brelades, just past and slightly south of the next north cardinal mark after the one Noirmont. Any ideas what they are and worth fishing?

There also another wreck close in at La Moye, more or less bang in the middle between st B's and Corbiere - looks like another potential mark? :g:

Interesting thread! Chippy if you want to find wrecks try some of the local dive websites for names of sunken vessels then search for their GPS coordinates - got to love Google!! On another note I thought you'd all would apprecite this photo of an apparent 29lbs bass caught in Brittany last year ... on a plug!!

That's a pretty good idea. In fact the dive guys from T&T Divers owe me a favour, as I just gave them a load of pics for this years brochure. Best I get an email off to them!!

That is one FAT bass!! Sure they didn't fill it full of lead before weighing it? ;-)

Great stuff, cheers.

We took the boat out (maiden voyage and all that) this morning. Bumpy as hell going out so headed into St Aubins Bay where it was a bit more sheltered and to have a shot at trolling, as the Mrs didn't fancy drift fishing in the rough sea.

First drop, 10 minutes into the troll, the rod bends over like crazy and line starts peeling off the reel with the ratchet screeching........beginners luck? Nah......bloody great big clump of weed :uhuh:

The wind started to pick up even more so headed back in......roll on the summer though, or even some calmer conditions!!

I am usually here these days- change of job as the last one was too hectic in terms of travelling, and even the exotic trips were difficult to get any decent fishing in.

I have booked a day out with Tony Heart locally to go for Tope on the 21st if you are interested? At the moment 3 of us have the whole boat!!
