In heavy tidal areas like the Severn or elsewhere do fish tend to have a residential territory or do they change completely every tide ? If a pier had a successful bashing from a match the day before will this affect the fish population the next day ?

True, wrasse are the only sizeable fish with territorial behaviour. However, other species may well have preferred areas and patrol routes. I remember hearing about anglers up Frampton-on-Severn way who were quietly catching some very decent bass. You can bet that they have to some degree figured out the patrol routes for these fish. In the absence of this knowledge you can fish blindly, try to discern features (eg rough, gullies) that may be used by the fish.
