Hi,
I'm a bit of a new comer to fishing but i've been trying to fish for mackerel with feathers the last couple of time i've been, but with no luck. First time i was at St. Catherines about half way up off the back and the second time I was on the rocks near the pump houses at corbiere. Are there any specific times, places or techniques I could use to catch mackerel and hopefully stop losing my feathers on the rocks?
Thanks
Welcome to the site! Personally I'd swap the feathers for a toby lure or a float rig using either a small sandell or a fyonk (which is a strip of fish either mackeral or snipe cut horizontally of the back bone) for bait.
Other spots to try would be White Rock (be careful), any of the north coats harbours in the evenings, gronez and the end of st catherines pier - I used to catch alot of snipe / mackeral there drifting a float in the run down the back of the pier, on the turing low tide.
Hope that helps good luck - there's nothing wrong with feathers - you'll have more fun/sport with lighter gear like a carp rod and spining reel.
Cheers, Tom
Worth persisting off St Catherines, but try the front side on a higher tide to lose less gear- closer to the end the better.

Thank for the help, gonna head back to corbierre tonight and probably give st cath another try at the weekend.
Cheers
Be careful round Corbiere- you will only slip once and its probably the windiest point in Jersey tonight!! I would give St Caths a blast, where it should be more sheltered, and you stand as good a chance as anywhere.
I completely agree with Grant - be careful over that side of the island at the moment - wind, rain and swell make for trecherous conditions. As Grant pointed out there's plenty of sheltered spots on the east coast worth trying ...
Had my first mackeral of the year last saturday night!! :yeah:
This weather sucks!

Thanks Grant, you absolutely right about corbierre the other night, once we saw it we decided not to risk it and headed down to the St. Brelades pier, caught a pollack but threw it back, i heard they're not too good to eat.
Any idea if the north coast is worth a try, i'm diving up at bouley bay tonight and was thinking about having a go when i'm done there?
North coast is always worth a go, year round, but if its mackies, stick to St Caths, then try the harbour July/ August time, but prepare for the onslaught!!
Went out in the old mans boat for a quick potter around on Sunday. Feathered for a couple of hours off the south east coast, but no mackerel, only loads of juvenile pollack...

Never mind Steve- I havent had anything that great recently either.
Better get that fishing in before you get hitched!

Same here....no mackies but had 20 or so Launce.
livelined them off St Ouens and noirmont.....not a sausage, except a couple of doggies!
I reckon with luck like that, you should give up!!
Were you in the bay at St Ouens? Always worth having a go off the sandbanks round Noirmont, as well as the old plugging spots a bit closer in- I am sure you know where I mean!

Tell me about it!!
Had more luck with the two drops of my pot so far - 3 lobsters! :clap2:
So what was the story with the new rod? Broke the other one!!?? - have you been landing some huge bass that you're not telling us all about?
Think I'm going to have a pop at muleting next week in the evenin' if you fancy some proper fishing?
Broke the rings on the other rod- purely abuse!! Lasted two years which isnt bad, especially as I was off last year for three months.
Will give you a shout about the mullet.
