Finally got me a Mullet today.

Took a chap from Holland Mulleting and I fished as well since he is an experienced angler.

Using half a bucket of shirvy we saw lots of mullet, some I reckon in the 4lb bracket up to 5 at a time in the shirvy. Got lots of fish sucking and nosing the hook bait but no takes then my float just vanished fishing further out where we couldn't see fish.

After 5 minutes and a good fight, the below is the result. 1lb 10oz of Golden Grey Mullet. Returned alive. Big mistake.

Called Len Le Page (local press angling columnist who also advises re the comps) when I got home as I knew not many fish weighed in for fish of the month and the result, don't even bother because:

1. It was returned.

2. Wasn't weighed on commercial scales.

3. Hand held scales, even ones that cost me £40 (Nice Avon ones) are not reliable to the ounze so no go.

Result  .

Why do you have to kill a fish to enter in a comp???

Absolutely Gary,

I know I caught the fish, as did my customer who was thrilled to see as many fish (though all in the water avoiding our bread) as we did, one of us catching was a bonus. I am thrilled with a personal best and I always wanted to return the fish alive rather than kill is for a mention in the Press.

I am just a little miffed that the guys who arranged these comps all those years ago which are fully open to everyone to enter and have been a great success, and whose organisers are complaining of a lack of entries in recent times, won't look at the way anglers are going who want to care for the fish and return them alive ASAP without harming them.

Guess I need to set up a new network of C&R competitions with a decent way to weigh/police etc.

Have been giving it some real thought lately and want to think about how to go about doing something like this. Any ideas welcome... Something along the lines of the comps they have in the UK with stewards on the beach to weigh and measure, bit more difficult in guernsey and the other islands as the comps tend to be more roving matches and people won't like to be restricted to a particular area?

You could always do a photo and weigh? Have always wondered about using video on your mobile to record thew weighing, including:

- Seeing the scales at zero, unhindered, before weighin;
- Seeing the fish get weighed, and the reading.

Wouldnt work for any records I am sure, but good enough for a competition?

I tried that one for this fish but they wouldn't accept fish weighed on hand held scales, even with the witness I offered.

I would accept something like that for sure if the scales were then checked against say a set of club scales or something.
