Nicky, Nice to hear you will be visiting Sri Lanka. Beruwela is great for fishing with a large river flowing into the sea less than a mile North of Beruwela at a place called Aluthgama. This river, the Benthota River (or Benthota Ganga in the local language - Sinhalese) at its estuary offers excellent fishing. Casting plugs 'shallow swimming floaters' around 7 - 8 inches and about 1 to 2 ozs, since it is a shallow lagoon/river mouth, will at the right time of year yield some excellent catches of Barramundi and Giant Trevally. Fishing with prawns (bought at the fish market nearby) too will get you smaller fish like Salt water catfish, Mangrove Jack and smaller Trevally. When casting lures catches of Trevally can range from 4 pounders to monster 30 to 70 pounders and hooking one of them from shore is an experience one will certainly never forget. I have had an Abu 7000 stripped in one 'non stop' run casting a 7 inch 'Cotton Cordell Red Fin' from shore.
However, on a negative note, this time of year, June, July and August, is slap bang in the middle of our South West Monsoon and the fishing in the Beruwela area (which is on the South West coast) is very poor as the sea is rough and the river generally in spate.
If the fishing in the estuary and sea is poor due to the ongoing Monsoon then the only alternative would be to fish a bit up stream in the Benthota River itself (1/2 to 1 mile) using smaller lures (3 to 4 inch) and/or prawns. If you are staying in a hotel or guest house just ask them to arragne a boat for you. An 18 foot fiberglass boat with outboard motor and a boatman who is also a 'fisherman' is easliy arranged - but get the hotel to arrange it as they know the fishermen in the area and will get you a responsible/reliable one.
There is also another alternative. Between Colombo and Beruwela (one hour drive from Beruwela) there is a large lake that is connected to the Sea called "Bolgoda Lake" and I have trolled in it during the monsoon period and caught many good sized Barramundi and Jacks.
If you are interested just pm me and I will let you have a tel no. and web site of a party that arranges fishing (with well made custom fishing boats) trips in the lake which is highly recommended.

Hi Estuary Perch,
Just read your previous post and I too am aiming to try a spot of fishing on the south or west coast of Sri Lanka in September. Not bothered about bringing gear - i'm more than happy to use a handline and have fished this way for game-fish including Dorado which I believe can be caught off-shore? Anyway, any tips on where to go to yield good fish at that time of year and fish types would be greatly appreciated.

I was in Sri Lanka about 8 years ago and saw a local man hook up with one of those giant Trevally that Estuary Perch described. What he did was quite ingenious. He was fishing with a rod that has 2 reel seats and as the GT was stripping line from the 1st reel, he attached the second reel to the rod, below the 1st reel. The line of the 1 st reel had a granny knot tied about 6 feet from the end of the line, so when the line on the 1st reel had nearly been stripped off he tied the line from the second reel to the line from the 1st reel just like a leader knot, thus giving him another 200 yards or so of line. After about an hour, the GT started to tire and foot by foot he winched it back. When the second reel was full the line was attached to the 1st reel, the lines cut and after about 2 hours he beached a monster GT. I hope that this explanation makes sense??

Okay Estuary Perch, maybe the handline option might need to be re-asessed! I don't want to have to take any equipment though as having a small child, baggage (including wife) and car seat is enough. I'm staying at a hotel who have said they can hire equipment for me but at $100 for half a day I think that's pretty excessive for SL, especially as they've quoted $145.oo for half a day's deep sea fishing, including boat, soft drink, fuel and equipment...

Hi all I'm going back to Sri in June, for 3 weeks so will be getting plenty of fishing in. Staying at Berewela this time. Last time i went to Sri i packed everything into my main case meaning i had to sacrifice a load of clothes, tackle etc because of the limited weight allowance, however to my delight while my wife was having a chat with Sri Lanka Air Lines she mentioned me fishing and they said fishing tackle is classed as sporting equipment and as long as it's a sensible amount (around 5KG) you don't have to include it in your total weight allowance and if it is packed separately it can go as extra for free, just a matter of if it will get there?.
I had some luck on Hokki traces last time so will be taking a variety of different sizes possibly up to cod size 7/0s and the usual 3/0 Mackerel sizes. Anyone know how popper plugs do for the Barramundi? Also I got a good selection of shads etc but are there any particular colours anyone can recommend that do particularly well?

Bluester, my reply post #5 on this thread is about Beruwela. As mentioned there June is when the monsoon is on. The South West coast (where Beruwela is) will be effected and the rough seas and rain swollen rivers cause the fish to move away and the fishing becomes poor.
Barramundi will take poppers but a lure that swims about 1 to 2 feet below the surface is better. Not too deep as you can get snagged on plants, rock or garbage on the bottom. Red head (ie. red body and white head) is the preferred colour.

Have a look at my other replies (this thread and others in this 'Asia' forum), they should provide you with most of the answers.
End September is the end of the Monsoon on that coast so you may be lucky. Will be glad to answer any specific questions. Also look at the possibility of doing some fishing in the Bolgoda Lake (1 hours drive from Beruwela) which has lately yielded many good catches of Barramundi.

Hi All
I havent fished in Sri Lanka yet but my wife has a travel company based there, please see in the sig below.
She can probably arrange an offshore boat from Colombo or Negombo for a lot less than the $150-200 a 4 or 5 star hotel will charge. But it probably wouldnt be a sports fisher and would just be the same boat the fishermen normally use. Also you would need your own gear. She might be able to negotiate a better rate than you would get from the hotel in Beruwela as I dont think they get that much business for sports fishing, but do seem to get quite a few divers.
I am going fishing next time I visit in Dec or Jan with her uncle, but the seas are calmer then as Estuary Perch has pointed out.

mid-October will have rain every day until end of November, can be very heavy. If you have a chance to postpone it to December or bring it forward 2 weeks that might be advisable. If you wait until December the seas will be calm and the fishing better as Estaury Perch has said before.

10-08-2008, 12:46
Well in terms of the seas they have a calm sea period and a period when you can surf. On the south and west coasts the calm period is December to March and the rough period is July to September. The East cost is the reverse of that. So on one side of the island the sea is rough and the other it is calm. Best fishing on the south and west is December to March.
The rainy seasons are April to June on the East Coast and mid-October to November on the South and West Coasts. Start of October will probably be OK in Beruwela.

thumbtack you can rent a small boat to troll on the river from ranwelli hotel just north of negombo. also try here if you want to fish the river, i have seen locals fishing here on the bridge and you can also probably negotiate to rent a boat from a fisher man near by:

thumb if you do go out on a boat there are three sets of reef lines parallel to the shore. one about 1km from the shore, its basically fished out, another with king fish etc about 5kms out (we tried fishing that but in april the waves were too big for us as we got sea sick, dec shouldbe calm though) and the shelf drop off about 10kms out. there are tuna, sailfish etc there.

Hi mate,
my friend Nihal is a professional fisherman in Unawatuna.
He can take you out in the typical small boat the locals use everywhere on the coast, he also has a few rods you can use. The small boats also limit the distance you can go out. I don't know how far you have to go from Una to reach the deep water but it's further than from Negombo for example. I've been out with him to a reef about 12km offshore and it was not deeper than 40m. January should be good, you may catch narrow banded macks, barracudas, GT's and other trevallys trolling Rapalas with a little luck. Or just nothing like me! :clap2: A very good lure is the Rapala Magnum CD 14 in redhead or mack patterns. Or try bottom fishing at night or early morning for different kinds of reef fish. If you like I can send you his mobile number and you can get in touch with him.
Regards
Alex

Hello!
I am planning to do mostly shore fly fishing somewhere south of Colombo early February. I travel with my wife so if you know a place where there are fishable beaches and rocks she can sunbath while I am wading and casting? A big bonus would be shopping.
Bentota, Beruwala and Hikkaduwa are places I am thinking because of close distance from Colombo?
Are Galle or Weligama worth traveling for fishing as those bays look good too?
There is a river in Bentota so does it make fishing more interesting and rise Bentota higher?
Photos in Google Earth are not too growded but do you think fly fishing would cause attention or trouble? Most likely I use two handed rod and perform Spey casts when waves allow so it is rather safe and not a lot of back cast room is needed.
Is it a good idea to use steel wire leader all the time? I have read there are Barragudas but does other fish have sharp teeth.
Do I need other protection than angle height neoprene shoes?
Its here - go to

you can probably fish the river mouth, see what the locals are doing and copy them. you could also go out on a boat or on bolgoda lake or up the river trolling a shallow diving lure for barramundi and mangrove jacks.

if you just fish for small bait fish or troll for barramundi on the river then a spinner rod with 15lb line and some heavier leader will be fine. for the river mouth if you live bait or lure fish for predatorial fish then a few hundred meters of 30 or 50lb line would be ok.

Hi,
Im going to stay in Hikkaduwa late October/ early November. I have planned to do some shorefishing and deepseafishing. All I know so far is that it is a fishingharbour located nearby Hikkaduwa.
I would be grateful for advises about the fishing in the Hikkaduwa area and also advises concerning fishingcharters or local fishermen who can offer trips inshore or offshore.

Hi Gezza
How did you get on?
Best
Easy
Just back from a week at Kogala south of Galle. Fished every day from shore- a reef in front of the Fortress Hotel at south end of beach- big swells but glassy water so was manageable. Fishing was great- used a Tenyru 270 rodstella 4000/20 pound braid/30 flouro shockleader-and lures- caught fish up to 7 kilos- locals called them "butterfish" but looked like some sort of pomfret/trevally to me. Even a kilo sized fish put up more of a battle than a 3 kilo sea bass- my usual target with this gear. The larger fish damn near emptied the reel- great fun. The local fisherman use rods and deadbait/feather jigs- lures ("plastic fish") are out of their price league- I donated a couple and watched one of the guys throw it on a handline one morning and haul in a 16 kilo fish. Fishing action was between 0500-0700 and 1600-1800- daytime pretty dead fish wise. No doubt there was a lot more I could have done but that little reef spot provided all the fun I needed on a family hols-my advice- take a twenty pound class lure rod, lots of sardine/flash minnow lures (you'll lose some and trade some) and be generous with spare lures- the local boys will help you pout with where and when, dead baits and in my case, even went diving off the reef ledge in a big swell to retrieve lures I lost- which I gave them. Free guiding and great fishing- recommend it!.

Hello.

Casso,
There is no licensing requirement.
Fishing is great from the mouth of the BENTOTA to about a mile (2000m?) inland. The River is slow and deep with a lot of mangrove life. Sea fish foray deep into the river due to the above.
Whatever you take, it needs to be teeth-proof. I rented out a boat from WATERSIDE INN and had a 6 hour fish, ended up with something like a black bream and an onerous cat fish.
I was using MUTU 3/0 and my 60lb leader was shredded from all the takes that I did not react to.
Bait was live-bait with a local venomous freshwater catfish called "HUNGA" (Heteropneustes fossilis). Yes, you would make the same noise if you got stung by one!! :help:
To be honest, the river is full of beasties, anything smaller than your target species is going to get snaffled up. So anything you catch in the shallows can go straight onto the hook for the deeper waters.
I was using a Shimano Beastmaster and a Penn fixed spool, fishing in about 10m of water.
Hope this helps

Can anyone recommend where and with whom I can do some sea fishing in Sri Lanka between July and August this summer? I am very new to sea fishing but keen to go for things like Mahi Mahi and even Marlin if possible? I'll need a kit and a guide etc.
I've happy to travel from wherever I'll be, either Kandy/Colombo.

Around July would mean sea fishing out on the East Coast. The SouthWest (Colombo) could be a bit too rough.
You need to get to the East/South East. Plan of action would be to get to Kandy, then wander north/North East towards the Cultural triangle, get your travel buddies overfed on culture ("If I see one more temple, I am gonna blow chunks") then take em to Trincomalee for them to relax on the stonking beaches...'cos you care of course...:secret: and shoot, would you believe that you have happened upon an area of excellent fishing too....:fishing1:
Then come back through Anuradhapura for one more shot of culture and fly out happy.
Works for me, hopefully works for you.

try trolling the river and bolgoda lake, you can pretty much charter any boat. if you want a boatsman in bolgoda pm estuaryperch or me. or go into the fishing tackle shop in colombo.
I'm currently planning to go Batticaloa for some deep sea fishing now, anyone done this?

well the drop off looks to be about 6 miles out, there is probably a reef there. might be worth contacting estuary perch and trying to hire a commercial boat. you will need to arrange an english speaker though.

If you decide you would like to go trolling or fishing on Lake Bolgoda, let us know, we have a boat there, a 19 foot with outboard and fitted to take trolling rods and up to four passengers. We have the rods, lures etc everthing you will need plus some expert advice on the area.
Had a great day out on your boat & enjoyed the evening beach trip too. Thanks Romesh.
Im off tomorrow to Sri Lanka looking forward to doing some fishing :)

Hi, Looks like a surgeon fish. Look for the sharp spine near the tail and the local name is Jetta.

Zimbo: Nice Fish
Hello There,
my name is Bernd, and i am about planning my Holidays to stay in SR in May 2012.
As i am crazy about fishing (can do that for days and weeks) i need some help planning my vacation. I have about 3 or 4 Weeks time and travel alone, thats why i have to choose my tackle carefully.
How about fishing in May, is the Season on the Westside and South already over?
Where on the east Side should i go for shore fishing or a good rivermouth into the sea?
where can i go out for off shore fishing by boat?
I plan to bring a spinning rod with me 30- 60 gramms casting weight, suitable for Pike. Is it useful for inshore flat waters and rivers/lakes?
And i am still not sure what kind of rod i should get for the coastal fishing for bigger ones in deep water or reefs. Is a strong beach caster okay or should i look for something with more power? How is the chance to hook a bigger one up around that time of the year(May)?
How safe is it to fish into dark from a Pier/beach or rivermouth? Do i have to calculate for robbery or crocodiles? I know that might sound a bit silly, but its my first time in SR and my expieriences from my last bigger holiday (some months in Cambodia) tell me to ask in front. I would not like to give quality stuff away because someone shows up a quality machete to me at dark.... ;-)
Now i still have the opportunity to choose cheaper gear.
What about Mahseer fishing in SR, are there big ones or mostly smaller ones to catch? Is specimen fishing for Masheer good in SR? Is May okay or usually impossible cause of monsoon in the mountain areas?
Hey guys i know this are many questions, i hope u can bring me forward about the fishing there. As i travel alone I will have enough time to fish. I have seen plenty of old stones and ancient stuff in my life yet. So I look forward for fishing and maybe some days hiking...
Greetz Bernd
Just came back from Unawatuna, fished with lures for a few times without any luck, when one of the locals called Salmon from the Flower Garden Hotel offered to take me along to Jungle Beach. Armed with Calamari off we went and ended up catching 4 mullet, so well happy. Tried to get out on a boat for sea fishing but the weather put paid to that. All in all had a great time and many thanks to Salmon for putting me on the fish.

Well done Knoxy.
Counting down the weeks now before we go. I'll have to find the beach you were on. What size were the mullet?

It can be a difficult beach to get to, but one of the local tuk tuk drivers can take you there. Biggest was about a 1lb, not massive but good fun on light gear.
