Mike has written a guide to get you going in the saltwater fly world......Click here (http://www.worldseafishing.com/news/127/)

Spinning with artificials is quickly becoming a favorite past time.

I look forward to reading this forum, its a subject that intrests me a great deal.

Nice one Bigads

Just been reading Mike's tips with interest. I had a crack a year or so ago and caught plenty of schoolies and mackerel (by 'eck to they go well on this gear) but I was a bit like a cack handed human whirling dervish.

Great fun and I am determined to master it.

My best capture to date is a mullet on the fly.......I'd like to say it was skill.. .....but I'm going with a fluke. :D

It weighed a couple pounds and I caught it in a small marina in Essex.

I've caught loads of fish overseas saltwater fly fishing. It's great fun! But, in this country, my catch record to-date remains as one Bass - not even what I describe as a 'schoolie', but 'perfectly formed' and agressive to boot. That came on a sparsely dressed Clouser minnow. I will persevere though!

I have been experimenting down here in west cornwall lately.....and have had some success with Pollack on the fly....sand eel pattern. Yet to catch a bass or mullet but will be trying the imitation Bread fly baited with maggots for the mullet soon.

Check this site out and have a look at sea tactics....very informative

Will post reports and let you know how I get on......:secret:

Have been meaning to give the old fluff chucking a go for a while. I have a light rod (no.7 i think) so have no excuse.
Have tied some of my own flies - am used to tying mackerel feathers all day, so its pretty easy. I'll dig some out and post some pics.
No douby i'll be picking all your barains in the near future when i eventually knock the dust of the fly rod and reel - hiden in the depths of the garage!!

Good to see it up and running!!

Had my first proper attempt at this recently. Without any previous fly fishing experience to my name I was very surprised that my comedy casting and retrieving managed to catch a mackerel, a pollack and a coalfish :D

I was surprised at how much power was in the flimsy rod - I was fully expecting it to collapse when any fish was hooked, but the backbone in it (especially when playing the mackerel) was a welcome surprise. Not sure how it would cope with the first power dive of a decent pollack though...

Biggest problem for me at the minute is finding a suitable rock mark with enough room for my dodgy backcast ... but I am now convinced that this a fun way to fish, and it could also be a very productive method.

My newbie tip would be: always wear sun glasses and a hat to protect yourself from badly timed casts !!!

hi all
just back from a week long festival and managed to pop into parents and get my fly rod, have caught many a trout on it up to about 8lb but really looking forward to trying it out on some mackerel soon! I was going to just attach a mack feather but have also brought some of my trout lures with gold heads with me i quite fancy using. have both floating and sinking lines with me so will try both.
Ipresume you need special flies for bass?

The imitation sandeel and clouser range of flies are good bass flies....tied for the salt water. Your trout flies will corrode quickly. Have a look on here

Good luck with the fishing and let us all know how you get on:)

cheers, I'll take a look. I expect to lose all the trout flies to the salt, but as i used to tie my own its no great loss. Will be looking to give it a go this week and will certainly report back.

Hi Paul
There're literally hundreds of sites on the Web illustrating fly tyings. But following on to Tony's suggestion another couple of sites I've found that have a comprehensive range of patterns that can similarly be adopted for saltwater fly fishing in this country are - http://reel-time.com/pattern/ and http://www.globalflyfisher.com/patterns/index.php?more=1. They respectively cover the East coast of the 'States and Baltic, although the latter's patterns are somewhat more 'global' in application. And the patterns I would suggest you look for are those imitating Shrimp and Sand Eels - the latter you'll find are referred to as 'Lance' or 'Launce'.

Hi guys
took my fly rod for a walk last night at black wall between the bridges over the strait. Nothing at all on the spinning rod using a selection of spinners and plugs. On the fly, floating line, I had my first sea fish!! A whole 8" mackerel :yeah: Not the biggest, not the best fight but was fun to catch on the fly. Simply used a feather off a mackerel trace and cast out, water was very calm in the small bays and picked up a mackerel pretty quickly. Took a fair time to get my casting to anything like what it should be as i have not used a fly rod in anger for about 3 years lol

now well and truely hooked and am itching to try another fly session.

The only fly fishing I have seen in the northeast, is for mackeral with feathers, that is not exactly fly fishing. If anyone has tried this up here, let me know, as I would like to try it if it is not like flogging a dead horse. Ther seems no end to species down south, but we seem to be limited up north. somebody drop me a line as I would love to find out more.
