Personally, i'm mostly a rapala man, with J11 or J13 top boys, and sliver (small one) gaining slowly!!
Also rate yo-zuri arc minnows.
The only surface plug i have is a jitterbug which i have caught several pike on, buy never tried in the sea.

Hi,
60g Dexter Wedge is my top catcher by a long way. Also had a few bass on the a Yo-Zuri that looked like a small mackerel.

Dexter wedge is what i use mostly, but plugging I rate these;
New Dexter surface popper, the bottom one,

Recently had a lot of fun with Shakespeare Big S plugs under a set of shrimp hoikis on a super light set up. Never tried before, but after 3 weeks on and off I am hooked, looks weird but the theory is sound. Lead sinks but as it floats and dives deep when pulled you get more vibration in the water, when nearing weedy ridges just let it float up and gently pull over. Not lost one yet !

What's the weight of those plugs Sals ?
The problem I've had with these things is casting out - esp. in high headwinds.
I end up adding a weight to them, they sink and I end up getting the "massive" contraption snagged and losing them (3 already !).
By the way, let me know where you're gonna be later this week.
Cheers

I will be about from Saturday night, late tide I should be at the Arches as its quite a deep one and I wont have chance to drive far once I have unpacked.

Hey Sal,
So what do you recommend for floating on the surface to avoid the dreaded weed...weight wise ?
Gotta be castable.....have 16 lb line...and is a leader necessary ?
HT on Sat is 00.12.....gonna be a late one !

That Dexter surface popper is good, also a lead head with jelly eel with the hook tucked into the rubber so it doesnt snag. I hate weed fishing, does my head in ! LOL
Be a late one indeed, should be quietish though, tides drop off mid week so wont be that good so will get a couple of sessions in along Llandulas as well as a few on the Island.

Sorry, the high tide is 01.11...forgot to add 1 hr to GMT !
The smaller Yo Zuri Mag Popper is top of our list - always out fishing our other plugs. They cast really well too because of the moving ball bearings inside. The sandeel colour seems best of all.
try storm chug bug works for me and plenty others

My main lure is just a simple dexter wedge. Have a few chug bugs but never had any luck on them, I also use a few rapala's with my favourite being an 11cm white one I think it's called a crystal minnow. It's transparent with a roll of irridescent foil inside it , the lure seems to glow in the water so I use it at dusk for mackeral.
Tack4 have you been getting bass on chug bugs? As I need a bass for my species list and would like to catch one on a surface lure :D
not so far this season but only just started to target them mainly of a poorly casted fly
a m8 had 4 on monday and 3 on tuesday of this week
early starts mind at the water for 04.45 had his on a duel aile mag slider early in a two hr session

Most successful plug? Rebel J13, but I think it depends a lot on what each person catches with first, confidence in a lure is everything. Other lures are: Dexter Wedge; Kilty Kerryman spoon; half to three quarter ounce jigheads with jelly worms; redgills. Lots of other lures have sneaked in to the tackle box over the years but the above always end up staying in, whilst the others get chucked out. The thing is, they are simple to use and cover most of the water in front of you, from the surface to the bottom, from near in to quite far out and between them provide flash, movement, noise, silhouette etc. Add some extras (like a bubble float, loose hooks, swivel etc) and you can deal with most situations using only stuff from a light rucksac.

Tobys 28g Mackeral looky likes (don't buy abu much cheaper copies) had looooooooads of fish on them. Dexters are pretty good too, got some wicked 4oz, yes 4oz dexters off ebay - £5 for 5! but I think that was a fluke as I've not seen them since- these are really really good under feathers.

You can get them up to 150 grams from Braid Direct - but not at that price.
Guys and Sally
You mention using your lures under feathers and Hokeyes. Could you explain just what the end tackle consists of, keep it simple as I'm a slow reader.

Just attach a string of mackeral feathers or hokkais to your mainline but instead of say adding a 1oz weight to the end for a casting weight add a 1oz Dexter wedge or similiar instead. Hope this answers your question.

Cheers for that mate, simple really but got myself confused.
I'll give that a go next time out.
Nice one.

When all else fails i usually end up tying on a Toby .. a classic lure that has proved its worth many times over for lots of years

If you watch on the retrieve you can see it actually looks like a medium sized fish ( THe plug, lure, spinner etc ) chasing bait fish ( eels, spratts, fry etc ) that hopefully entices my big fish to have ago in the action ! LOL Have had better results with pollock and much larger macky on this method.

my best catcher is a Storm gold bar spinner,
in fact its the only lure i have caught fish on, 1 weever, foul hooked a smelt and lost a decent bass or sea trout !!
oh for once it all makes perfect sense, has anyone told the fish though?

Its all on the day ive found for the type of fishing i do, i know its not a plug but the best artifical ive found are mustard shrimp rigs, ive had: mackrel, scad, bass, pollock, whiting, pouting and gar fish on these, both baited and un-baited. my techneque of spinning consists of more of a trolling action as i walk harbor walls. jettys etc with the plug 30-35 yards behind me, the best one ive found are tiger minnows, closely followed by a flying - C (Red or black, depending on the time of the day) they are both killers for those greedy bass laying in wait around the harbour waiting for there next meal to swim by!
As it has been mentioned a spinner (toby or wedge) under a set of feathers is a killer methord, my hinder your distance, but the results are normally worth while.

For bass fishing in Luce Bay the top popper to use is the Yozuri Aile Manet SB Slider 18g sandeel pattern :) A bit pricey but well worth the investment.
Bass cannot resist its action :)

Plug's For casting it has to be the X-Rap and J11 for trolling CD Mag 11 Floating Mag 11 and Sliver. 5 Plugs in various colours covers most situations for me.
As for spoon's if in doubt whip your Toby out. I have to many to call a favourite but a short list would be in no particular order Toby, Koster, Bridun lance, Dexter Wedge, Mean Shore Pirks, Abu Krillete and the Stinger.
I plug for bass over mussell beds and weedy rocks in shallow water (6inch to 4 foot), so surface poppers & sliders are the order of the day. Favourite lure at the moment is the Storm Saltwater Chug Bug in blue/ silver or red/white.
Biggest so far is a 6lb fish, caught in two foot of water. On the same day I landed a 4lb, 31/2lb and a couple of schoolies and lost a quality fish too! All in the space of an hour on the flood before the tide pushed me off. All on the Storm Chug Bug. The thing I like about it is the loud rattle, which seems to entice the fish to strike. To be fair, on that day, I think ANY lure would have caught!! I've also caught fish to 5lb on the humble Ron Thompson Bass Buster.
Interestingly, I went plugging the next day expecting more of the same, SAME venue,SAME lure, SAME conditions, fish showing everywhere..........and BLANKED!! That's fishing for you!!

nice fish Rushy.. one of the best looking bass i have seen for a while ;)
just ordered 10 yo-zuris off fleabay.. should be able to find a winner in the spring!
Now's the best time to go plugging for bass!! Everyone complains when the pin whiting show, but It's when the pin whiting show that the bass go mad for the plug. September and October are THE best time of landing a double figure fish. I've even caught into November. Another good sign is if you see cormorants or divers working an area. If they're chasing small fish, you can bet the bass aren't far behind!!
My best advice is ....get out there and give it a go!! No none ever caught a bass sat watching the t.v.!!:)

As flyfisherman say ' match the hatch ' , fish with whatever most closely imitates the bass' natural prey in the area your targetting them.
my favorite was an abu copper lure, had it foryears and was very good, lost it with a nice bass at aberthaw and not seen anything of them recently.

Do a lot of reef plugging around Jersey, masses of Bass around at the moment.
Currently my most successful plugs are :
Lucky craft flash minnow 130MR - mackerel or sandeel - diving lure
Lucky craft Sammy 115 - surface lure, very easy to work
Daiwa Saltiga Pencil - surface lure - again very easy to work.
All three are fairly pricey but good quality and as fairly heavy easy to cast.

Been doing a lot of bass fishing recently, filming and photography purposes, and there is one lure that has caught head and tails above the rest..............not to say that it will always work, I love the Yo-Zuri plugs for example, but for some reason this certain lure has always caught recently, and my mate has been doing seriously well on it also.
This lure is : The Maria Chase BW in holographic colour
Bit of a silly name, but it casts like a dream, have yet to have one turn over in flight and tangle up, swims nice and shallow for the marks we fish. But you need to crank it fast and work the rod tip, and then the lure seriously comes to life. My mate in Ireland has for years used virtually nothing else but the original Storm Jointed Thundersticks, and has done horribly well on them, but even he is now converted to the Maria Chase lures.
Not a very expensive lure, I am not paid to say any of this by the way !!!, just telling you what has been working so well recently. I only know one place to get hold of them in the UK, not sure why as they are such awesome lures, but they kill !!!!!!
But then of course the thing with lure fishing is surely this : when you get a hit using a certain lure, who is to say that another lure would have done just as well at the same time................all I know is that we all have confidence in certain lures, but for me, I will never go bass fishing now without some of those Maria ones in the box.
Storm jointed thunderstick, silver\blue.
Try it!
Where can you buy the jointed thundersticks shooper, I thought they'd stopped making them, I haven't seen one since I lost my last one a couple of years ago.
Any info?
