Hi Abe
There some excellent articles on fly fishing tackle on this sight, written by Mike Thrussell Snr. But, somewhat surprisingly, they're not that easy to find through the site's menuing structure. The site's search facility is extremely useful in that regard, but make sure that you restrict the search to the WorldSeaFishing site and NOT the World Wide Web unless you want to look through countless thousands of often totally meaninless references.

Any rate they're a useful starting point. Just click on these links -

Rods - http://www.worldseafishing.com/news/127/ARTICLE/1221/2006-06-17.html

Reels - http://www.worldseafishing.com/news/127/ARTICLE/1220/2006-06-17.html

Lines - http://www.worldseafishing.com/news/127/ARTICLE/1219/2006-06-17.html

Flies - http://www.worldseafishing.com/news/127/ARTICLE/1218/2006-06-17.html

Also, in terms of techniques, these might well be worth reading as a starting point - http://www.worldseafishing.com/news/170/ARTICLE/1694/2006-07-31.html and http://www.worldseafishing.com/news/145/ARTICLE/1410/2006-06-19.html.

Best of Luck
Dave

Here's the url - http://www.bass-fishing.co.uk/casting-instruction.php - for another site, covering casting techniques. It's a bit of an idiot's guide and doesn't, unfortunately, cover double hauling. But at least it's a starting point.

Maybe a daft question but, is a SW fly rod different from a FW ?
Same with the line?

Hi Abe
You can of course use a freshwater fly rod in the salt, but mine tend to have slightly faster tapers.

I guess the same thing with fly lines, although they may be issues with rotting of the line's core with some lines designed specifically for freshwater. Certainly worth checking. But I tend to use lines designed for American Striped Bass - steeper tapers than conventional freshwater lines.

There is a good amount of useful info on this site, however if you're also looking for a site very much geared towards the casting side of things, have a look at www.sexyloops.com

From a tackle perspective, spend as much money as you can afford on a decent reel. I've had an unfortunate experience with a supposedly saltwater-safe reel recently and it really is worth forking out more money for a decent reel (Shilton, Abel, Tibor etc if you can afford it!!).

oh! well spent a fortune on bits and bobs , just waiting for a few lines to arrive and all ready to give it a whirl. I have made arrangements with a good friend who is a very keen Fly Fisherman to teach me the basics down the Gower over the weekend. Thanks all for the input, links and info
