mullet at reculver on the se cost

i have had a few trips to reculver trying to catch mullet at low water and trying different flys i had one good day on a shrimp patten fly, but most times standing out there waste deep and seeing the mullet topping up all around me and not even a take can make you screem trying every fly fast, slow. my last trip showing one of my friends how to cast and he was trying his new spinning rod and reel. i was watching the mullet topping and thinking what would i do if i was trout fishing with trout topping i would have put a dry fly on. and i had a black fome fly looks like a house fly which one of my friend tied it for me many years ago. i put it on with a floating line. on two casts i had mullet have a look, on one of my casts hit into a mullet but lost the fly . so will be putting a order in for a selection of fome flys and will try this again :g: :idea:

let me know if anyone trys this and it works for them or any other methods that are a bit differnt

Thanks for that tip Seatrout. Never thought of using a terrestrial pattern fished dry for them. I wonder what they're misidentifying it for? Or is it part of their natural diet?

Along the shore here atleast there are piles of rotting sea weed from the last onshore gale. The sea piles them up at the highwater line, where they rot - and stink:yucky: :yucky: :yucky: Flies lay eggs in the rotting weed etc.
During big spring tides, the sea washes through the weed, and mullet can be seen, especially in the evenings / mornings coming in very shollow feeding on the maggots and flies. I have caught them on bread and fish baits but have been well outfished by others using maggots.
One guy was flyfishing single maggot on a floating line and was hammering them. Amaizing sport. Went and bought a fly rod / reel to use for mullets and bass/mackerel but still gathering dust in the garage!!

Look in Augusts' 'Trout Fisherman' magazine for a picture of a yellow foam maggot used in catching mullet. Looks very simple I may even have a go at tying on myself, it's basically a small piece of yellow foam in a carrot shape! Would also catch bass I shouldn't wonder as they also go for seaweed flies' maggots so I'm told.
