View Full Version : Split rings for surface lures?

Hi

I've just bought a few surface lures including the Yo Zuri Hydro Popper and the YZ Mag Popper. I was wondering whether it would compromise the action of the lures if I fitted a split ring to the glued in ring already attached to them. Or should I just leave the lures as they are and attach them to my line without anything in between?

Cheers

Gerry

I use a small swivel clip on my line to attach lures to & find the action is just fine, & this allows me to change lures quickly.
One thing with lures is that I always sharpen the hooks with a diamond stone, well lubricated with water, even new ones, especialy if they have those hooks which appear to have nickel coating on them.

It really shouldn’t matter with the lures you’ve mentioned – they’ll both run straight. I tend, when casting them with both a fixed spool and multiplier outfits, though to tie in a short length of 30lb shock leader just to cope with the continual strain of repeated casting. That’s using an Albright at the reel end – it’s very compact and doesn’t affect casting distance – and normally just a Uni knot at the lure end. (There could well be tying instruction for those knots on this site – unfortunately can’t remember – or just put the terms into a search engine, either that on the forum or one like Google.)

Just a minor point – fairly quickly you’ll start to see a ring of slight indentations developing at the ‘tail end’ of the Hydro Popper. It’s nothing to worry about – it’s the impact of the hook points striking the lure’s body during casting.

That animated knot site's excellent - the Albright's also on it - http://www.animatedknots.com/albright/index.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com.

Thanks for the info guys - shock leader sounds a good idea. Don't want any of these expensive buggers flying off mid-cast!!

i use a 9" pike trace on my line, this ties direct to main line and has a swivel with connecter to go on lure, very helpful in stopping line damage near lure by sharp teeth etc.

hi drumgerry.. if you are woriried about compromising the action.. add a swivel a few feet up the line and join the lure/plug with a rapala knot at the eye ;)

thats what i do with the smaller types that might be affected by extra weight.
