had loads of gurnard on them! just bump it along the bottom
even better if baited with a little macky strip!

gota say you can keep your expensive rappalas! (tho they obviously have ther place) for me its the dexy
had pollock gar macky bass gurnard on them, i also think the weight
of them helps the hook up aswell as being durable and easy to cast distance
and u dont brake your hart when they get snagged as ther so cheap!
ther simplicity is ther beuty!

viva la dexter wedge!

Helpful Hint with dexter Wedges: After a few sessions the holographic Tape gets battered and worn. I bought a sheet from an online Auction site for not a lot of money and it will probably refresh about two thousand Dexter wedges - Its the proper Dexter Holograph Stuff!!! Then your Wedges will keep catching and you won't have to replace them because your catch rate drops!!!!:)

OK I know this is a thick question but is there a technique to reeling in a dexter wedge - do you reel in slow, quick, sink and draw? I usually try everything but I was just wondering if there is a proper way to do it.

depends what ground you are fishing i guess.. in a good surf, a nice steady retreve, tip up. then fishing a deep peinisular or rocky outcrop i like to throw it as far as i can, steady retreve then pause and allow to sink a little.. steady retreve, sink a little, and on. this method allows me to probe the various depths (next cast followed with a steady retreve to check the water infront of me) and by watching the angle of the line, allows me to follow the profile of the rock outcrop im standing on. i find this deadly for quarrys or deep sea defences where predators wait in ambush holes.

its a bit of personal choice as some say a gentle retreve will have as many takes as a twitched lure. with holographics, i do like to give the rod a sideways, or upwards twitch every now and then to throw the light/flash of the lure deeper.

my way of tought is based on holo lures, plugs ect require a different skill and practice to immitate plunging/wounded/injured fish. something i learn day-by day.

as with most forms of fishing, hunting ect.. if what you are doing is having no effect for say 20-30 mins.. change style, tactic and/or color.

a simple switch can have an amazing result in a good day, or not so good....

Proper... depending how far you want to cast and the size of the quarry will decide the size of Dexter.

I hope to have a range of the silver Dexters type lures both the solid slice type and also some of the larger coffin with holes sort.
they come in ranges from 19 gram ( not much use for sea jobs to 47 grams which are app 90 mm long. ( I am not going to get any of the more expensive holographic lures , as from my own experience I catch more on the very shiney ones

Putting the bigger lures on a set of four feathers 4/0 hooks gives you a fair crack at beach casting for all sorts of predatory fish .

Only fish with 3 hook feather rigs, if the feather trace comes as 5 cut into 2 one of three hooks and one of two use your Dexter Wedge ( my two weigh in at 28g and 60g) on the two hooker. Hope this helps!?

SImilar lure but with more disturbance in the water is the royd lure, they have an online order service as well. I was going to buy some and was chatting to Timberwolf at the time, he said he had some on the way and gave me a couple to try when we camped on Angelsey.

Verdict ? Ace, cheap as chips and varied sizes, proper job boss !

http://www.roydlures.com/

I was picking Dexters up at the right price, but after raving about them on the packed beach when I landed a 6.4lb bass on one tipped with Gulp, the shop sold out and he put the prices up ! me ad my big mouth ! LMAO

Any chance of a link to the site as prob why my catch rate has dropped never thought of that , Also does drilling holes in them help when light is falling or is this not worth the effort

iv'e been using dexters for years and i always find they out fish any other metal lures. another goodun for mackies and bass is a lure called a mitralite, just as good for mackerel but better than the wedge for bass

sallysludgebucket

I like Dexters and use them upto 65gm weights also as Codfather2 mentions the mitralite.
https://www.veals.co.uk/acatalog/miralite.JPG

I find that adding a float in some situations dramatically increases the catch rates and has the added bonus of not having your lure snag if its weedy or a snaggy mark. Can work consistantly at a certain level, alter, and still sink and draw.

I also add a couple of homemade irridecent tinsel feathers which adds to the varieties.
Also as you draw the rig over a shy, bashfull, lazy preditor fish ( called Clive !) , it thinks " Aye up a little fish darting past, shall I chase it ?, nah, too small----ang on another !!! Nah, can't be bothered, ( big fish lure goes past all glittering and mouth watering ) Aye up ! I'll have me some of that !!! "
Ok i put it over with jest, but the same principal is the basis of some fly fishing incorperating 3 droppers, the idea to get the fish to take the largest hook, so better hook ups.

I wouldnt buy them online becuase of the sheer weight from them adds up in the P&P.Your local tackle shop WILL sell them if not get them to order some for you and you wont have to pay for p&p! its cheaper!

That is of course if your local tackle shops carry any ! I can't even buy rig body 60lb line. I do stock up when I am at the coast, but if I am traveling for a week + and unsure where or when I may find a shop, it pays to have the basics already.
