sallysludgebucket in a useful contribution has said that dawn and dusk are more important than the state of the tide. Is that most peoples experience?

Well I find that the best time to catch Bass - or any other kind of fish - is when they're on the feed and in your area!:D

I'd agree that dawn and dusk are more important than the state of the tide. That said however good fish can and are caught in bright sunlight.

The best advice is to get to know a small number of marks at all stages of the time / day. It then may be possible to hit each mark at the "hot" time before moving onto another....

ive seen bass feeding in the same spot like clockwork at 5 am in the morning.
But this area is devoid of fish in early evening dusk.

I mainly fish from a boat and so disturbance on the shore and the need for an early morning start is less important.
To my mind I have found that Bass feed very best at the start of a flood spring tide although this is not a science.
I have also found that they feed more aggresively every three days with the middle days being a bit less active.

I fish for bass in around 30ft of water over broken ground. They tend to feed on a spring tide that runs either way into the dark. The last 1/2hr of daylight being the best. Where I fish, the strong tide drives them off the offshore reefs and into the bays but only on springs - the rest of the time you got to fish the reefs.

When they are on the feed, my area, half an hour after high tide sun or dull,
caught in second breaker spinning.
There one day gone for days after!
