And welcome to our forum. I have to readily admit to not being able to understand what I assume is Bahasa Melayu (Malay) but the pictures on that link ‘spoke a thousand words’. Great catches! I presume most are coming either deep water jigging or trolling with rapala-type plugs?

Whilst I recognise some of the species, particularly the pelagics, what is that strange Snapper-type fish, I think it’s the 12th photograph in, with the elongated snout? This is the caption under the photograph -

Dave the fish is a long nose sweetlips there is a short mouth also very good to eat caught easily bottom fishing often in big shoals.John

Many Thanks John for identifying it. The name now 'rings a bell' - I've often heard them refered to in catches off Queensland (Australia).

Looking at the IGFA All Tackle records I notice that the only Sweetlip variety recorded is the Painted Sweetlip (Plectorhinchus pictus) at 6.9kg (15lb 3oz). An opportunity for one of you to get your name in the record books?

Hi PJ...
Yeah.. most of the fishes are coming from bottom fishing and only a few from jigging. We didn't do trolling at all but driffing with dead (and smelly :)) baby mackerel was great.

The fish with the elongated snout is commonly known as a Long Nose Emperor(Lethrinus Olivaceus).I have seen them up to 10kgs.They have become severely depleted in our area(Koh Tao,Thailand) due to their loving of fish traps.
Sweetlips (family Haemulidae) are similar but have a much steeper forehead and thicker head, as well as an underslung jaw.
The emperor is a far superior eating fish.
