I have caught bass on redgills at night / just past dusk several times and was wondering weather flyfishing for the same fish would work??
I was thinking of using some sort of popper / buzzer type fly (yet to be designid and tied) which would work at and / or just below the surface.
Any thaughts / ideas??

Sounds like a good idea SS, it would have to be a fly that caused disturbance in the water though. Vibrations and noise for the bass to home in on. IMHO
Worth a go though....nothing to lose in trying :D

where I go pluging and spinning for bass - there are always a few regular fly fishers there. they laugh coz I can't get into the water in my wellies.
they always use welsh flag looking flies - that's it. green red and white - they often put me to shame.
I should buy some decent waders!

Hi Sharpshooter
Whilst I've never tried it in this country yet certainly from experiences abroad predators will readily attack flies at night. I've only ever had them take though whilst stripping fast to create a surface disturbance. And they'll quite happily 'nail' on dark phases of the moon.

give it a go e-bay is the best place to look, tight lines.
Fly fishing at night works well. Most use black or dark flies that give a good outline. BUT in clear water and bright skies standard colours often work better. Fish more slowly and work the fly in the current. If the fish are hitting bait in the dark then I often outfish bait guys.
However fly fishing at night does require good casting co-ordination and line mangement. Use a stripping basket/tray and maybe overline your rod by a line weight to help you 'feel' the line load your rod.
Also remember fish work close in during darkness so don't spend all night try to cast to france! Work the current and structure.

very good information flyguy, will keep in mind myself, thanks.

There are several scoolies in the river at the moment so must get out and give it a go. Just have to tie some mini poppers up and give them a blast!
Thanks for the advice guys!

Slider type flies like Gurglers work well trundled across the surface. I have never caught on large bangers, but thin ones 5/16 diameter have caught a few fish. I think UK bass respond to more subtle surface lures than US Striped bass etc.
Size 1 and 1/0 clousers work well. Fish them slower than you would in the day. If you are fishing current then standard down and across tactics catch alot of fish. Deaddrifting across a current with the occasional big strip to. For beaches cast behind the waves and along the beach not just out to sea.
Had 6 during darkness on Thursday, biggest 3.5lb. Caught a 7.5lb (27") fish 1 hour after daybreak to, a PB for me :)

dont know if these will help S/S, but some shapes to give you ideas!
some of the gold or silver weave that you use on the sardine feathers you sent me will look smart, streched over the body ;)

Got some spot on stuff called "mylar tubing" sent over from the states. Looks great stuff tho not cheap.
It is silver/mono braid but you can stretch it over things.
Also got coloured (red) luminous tubing and a load of squid jig spikes - no prizes for guessing what i've been making lol.
Cheers for the link mate.
