The Best Deep Diving Plug?

The title says it all really.

I'm new to lure fishing and know a spot where a backwater empties and fills thru a 100m wide gap, the tide rip is huge - 9 knots sometimes. It gouges out a deep hole and the bass sit on the edges of it. Its about 30ft deep and you need to cast 50ft out. At this time of year they are feeding on whitebait and at slack tide they actually chased the little buggers onto the beach. I've tried tobys, poppers, mepps, shads, redgills, and storm sandeels - caught nowt. I think I need to get deeper and keep it moving. The water is very clear. Any ideas?

You're probably going to struggle to imitate whitebait with a small plug unless you incorporate some weight have you tried a Rapala Sliver which is the deepest diving standard plug I've used. I've used a 1oz drilled bullet stopped 3ft from a 1and a half inch Yozuri mackeral plug from deep rock marks for pollack. Hoe this helps.

I've just come back from Turkey and caught a nice palamut (see attached picture) with a Dexter Jedi Rattler (green mackeral). I'm keen to try and tempt bass with it here!

By the way, it tasted very nice for supper!

The definition's not terribly good on the image of your palamut but I suspect, with what appear to be dark 'fingerprints' between the pectoral and ventral fins, that it's a Little Tunny (Euthynnus alletteratus). If I'm right it would have had wavy, 'worm-like' markings on its back above the lateral line.

Hi Dave,

Having checked the original piccy, the description matches yours - i.e. my fish was probably a little tunny. I've attached another one (I'm having difficulty getting the picture down to the file size that the forum will accept - the original is about 2MB).

Can you please confirm that it is a Little Tunny - I've never caught one before.

Also, do you know any good links for fishing in Turkey? Particularly identification of species and some possible marks along the south Turkish coast. Any help much appreciated!

Yes. it's definitely a Little Tunny. Apart from the Mediterranean they're widespread throughout warm temperate and tropical reaches of the Atlantic.

On our side of 'the Pond' they're encountered up as far north as the Bay of Biscay and very occasionally in areas like the Channel Islands and off of Cornwall. I've caught them off the Algarve, but also in the 'States from Florida to as far north as Long Island (New York). And, just to confuse in parts of the 'States they're refered to as False Albacore.

Most of the ones I've caught have been in the 12 to 16lb range, but the largest one caught on rod and line - from Algeria - weighed 35lbs.

I've never actually fished in Turkey but I'll have a hunt through for sites. Perhaps though others can help in that respect?
