Lure Rod Advice

Dear all,

My current spin rod casting weight is between 20g - 40g so all my spinners range in weight from 18g - 30g. Have just purchased a new spin rod with has a casting weight of 40g - 80g.

The question is will I still be able to use the lower weighted spinners on my new rod? or will I have to add some weight?

I think you might struggle to compress a stiffer rod with light lures so reducing your casting distance, one way to be sure is to just go out and give it a try! I wouldn't recommend adding weight to plugs etc as it will spoil the action of the lure, may be a different story for simpler lures like wedges and tobys, personaly I prefer not to add weight to any lures :fish:

you'll still be able to use it but they wont load the rod as well and casting distance may be reduced.

However - for some lures the stiffer rod will work really well- surface poppers for eg.

just give it a go and see what happens- rods are as different as lures and it really is horses for courses.

Use the stiffer rod for surface lures other than poppers and you'll be able to "walk the dog" much easier.This technique involves flicking the rod top as you retreive the floating lure.As soon as you see a fish follow CLOSE YOUR EYES until the line pulls tight!If you don't you'll strike and blow your chance before the fish really takes the lure you can't help it!I've gone all gooey just thinking of surface sport,roll on the summer!

Travel light and take both rods, providing your not wading of course you just put the thing down.

If you can get a Saltwater Fly Fishers belt pack from the USA they have a rod holder on the top of the pack that you can store your broken down rod in.I got mine from Orvis's cheap shop at the Clark's Retail Village in Street.

Learn the flickback cast. It compresses your rod more effectively than casting from a static start. The Americans use this cast with their short stiff baitcasters and tiny multipliers very effectively. Takes a bit of practice, and set the reel brakes on while learning.
