Just wondering if anyone has tried grilled sandeels ? Delicious on toast or with a green salad. I remember many a time during uni, we used to crack open a couple of packs of ammo (£1.10 made for a cheap nutritious meal). They taste like whitebait but better. Eat them whole or headless, the bones are really soft. It was really handy that we lived less than 150 yds from a tackle shop, which was closer than Patel's convenience store and Off License.
I'd be interested to hear from others who eat them and whether they prefer fresh or frozen?

I've never tried sand eel, but many years ago i was buyin lug/rag worm by the pound weight in Gosport and shipping them home, to sell, in the boot of my car, i got stuck in a traffic jam on the M25 and survived for a whole 3 weeks on a diet of lug/rag worm and stale socks, that'd been worn for a month,

Well I was watching Huge Hairywhatshisnam on TV the other day and he was using sand eel for bait trying to catch Bass. When he blanked he decided to cook the leftover bait and he reckoned they tasted sheite!!!
Yep. I saw the same thing with Hugh Furry Knittingwool. He'll eat most things that others won't, and if he reckons they taste awful that's good enough for me.

i head and tail sandeel with me teeth if they are frozen(ammo)..they dont taste too bad.and its quicker.
defrosted is a different matter. fairly huge milkingstool was eating manky defrosted eel..the bloke has no class :notworthy
Must be mad to eat anything frozen for bait use as the factory, or whatever, concerned will not have any hygiene regs etc. Otherwise the squid you buy in shops for human cosumption would cost as little as the boxes from a tackle shop!!!!!!!!
