when it comes to pluggs is it better to pay a bit more for them i.e rapalas/storm, or do the cheaper pluggs work just as well? :g:

Do you pay for what you get?
Generally ? Yes,
Personally ? No.

I see a bargain and buy the lot up, had some great double blade spinners from my local Game Fair dirt cheap and are leaps and bounds better than any others I have ever used. I cry when I lose an expensive Mepps, Ondex etc

The very cheap plugs that look kinda tacky anyway, will soon bost up when you clonk a rock, where as a posh en will just have a scratch, chip of paint worst case senario. If I had all £10+ plugs I think they would be in a case on the wall, it makes me feel ill when I lose one.

Saying that, have you seen the lure savers ? A clip on lead with a knotty bobbly wooly end that you slide down on another strong line to your lure, jiggle it so it catches on the trebles and yank it free. I used to make discs that clipped on if their was a strong current and would use it to pull from a different direction.

i use to only use rapalla, bought a couple of cheapos for there colour, couldn't get rapallas that colour, have caught loads of trout and salmon on them, went to get more cheapos the same, sold out, everyone was buying them for the salmon.
the only thing with some cheapos is you have to tune them, tweak the front wire to get them to run straight, this is only with some of the really cheap ones.
i use LEWS if you can find them, cheap and run true. Smithwick is also good, i get these as birthday/xmas pressies from friends in the USA.

I think that you know what you are getting with the more well known plug makes but agree that it is a bit galling when you loose one.

You've probably seen my earlier thoughts on buying from the states on this forum.

That said, probably my favorite lure is a £2.50 shallow diving minnow that has produced time and time again for me. It's either a Ron Thompson or Grauvell (can't remember) lure which was admittedly in the sale, hence the price. Unfortunately I've never seen them again but would love to get a couple more.

loosing a fairly expensive lure sucks... go for yo-zuris from the channel islands/guernsey ect. i had a quote for 10 zuri lures posted for £60 and jumped at the price t.b.h! all well regarded.

thinking how much it stung when i lost my rapala silver recently... then tought about saturday, fishing a mark i was informed was clay/silt. 3 x brand new tapered greased weasels, 3 of ian's rigs and 3 geminis, and a possibe fish/eel to boot.

canny links... me thinks!

I agree with the above, that each serious Plugger will always need the tried and tested Rapala's, Yo-zuris etc, and I've not personally come across a jointed plug yet that seems to perform as well as the Rapalas.

Having said that, when it comes to Poppers my most productive, a "Kingdom Mars" brought from Guensey via ebay for just £3, has out caught my skitterpops and chug bugs by a country mile, even producing 4lb Pollock over deep water - awesome great fun!!

Slightly off topic, but seeing as the subject of losing expensive lures has come up, I fitted all my dearer lures with Fishtek LureSavers (http://www.fishtek.co.uk/luresavers/index.htm). Only had one serious snag since adopting them but in that instance they worked a treat. Anyone else tried them?
