Cape Verde Shore

Hi all,

Has anyone out there had any experience of shore fishing the Cape verde Islands. Ive fished gambia's beaches several times and was wondering whether I could expect similar results.

Firstly welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately, to put matters straight, I haven't shore fished in either the Gambia or Cape Verde. But I have fished offshore from the island of Sao Vicente in the Cape Verdes.

The islands in the achipelago are all volcanic and, apart from a few magnificent sand beaches, you'll find deep water right under your feet. Therefore I suspect the species you'd encounter shore fishing would be closer to those you'd find in the Canaries, 1000 miles to the north. So it's more likely that you would encounter species like - Bluefish, Barracuda, Amberjack, Horse Eye and Crevalle Jacks. Sharks, including Tigers, can be found inshore and odd things like Dorado and Skipjack Tuna would occasionally be encountered.

Obviously there are bottom feeders present but what they are....um. Certainly there are species of Snapper, but the ones we saw in the marina were relatively small. And I suspect there would be Rays.

It's probably worth using the search facility on this site to determine if there're other posts on the islands' shore fishing potential - just click on search and enter 'Cape Verde' into the box.

There're mainly Blue Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna but I'm sure there's one showing one of the locals gutting his catch. That contained some of the big Jacks that you should be able to catch either on livebaits or lures.

Which of the islands are you going to? I presume it’s going to be one of the northerly ones - but Sal or one of the islands further to the west? That may have a bearing on whether you'll be surf casting or mainly spinning. Sal did seem to have lots of classic Atlantic storm beaches whereas the others very volcanic.

If you’re going to target the Jacks and Bluefish from the shore you’ll find they respond best to artificial lures – poppers, fished fast. Things like Yo-Zuri Surface Cruisers are very effective. Or somewhat cheaper, and lures that fish sub-surface are the Slug-Go range. In the UK you can buy them through http://www.rokmax.com/

If no one else posts have you perhaps thought about posting to the 'Virtual Tourist' web site - http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Africa/Cape_Verde/TravelGuide-Cape_Verde.html. You might well get a response from that.

I am of to Cape Verde Sal in a couple of weeks time and I want to do some shore fishing any tips would be appreciated also I want to do a boat trip for the big fish how would I go about booking from england as I do not want to miss out on doing this,for the shore fishing I was planning on taking my sheakspear travel rod which is a light liner but I cant help but feel this wont be up to the task, If that is the case then what do you advise. As you will have guessed from this post I am not mr experienced so all advice will be gratefully recieved. Best Regards Ian

Ended up going back to The Gambia but prehaps I should have chanced it as results there were not so good.

thought I'd re-open this one, I didn't do to well on the fishing front I didn't manage to get on a boat, only fished off the beach in front of the hotel rui funana totaly blanked on the lures but booked up on an evening shark fishing competition and caught the first shark of the evening only small but at least it broke my duck, one of the dutch guys in the party caught a lovely tuna off the beach.

The competition ran from 1800 to 2200 we were taken by quads about a mile down the beach to the left of the rui hotel by the Italian organizers, all the knocks seemed to come between about 2000 and 2115.

We are going back for two weeks in february got an apartment in santa maria and we are hopeing to spend a few days in santiago I want to walk the serra Malagueta can any one advise me on the cost of return flights from sal to santiago tried contacting t.a.v.r without any joy.

Allso I would really like to get out on a boat this time and try for something big,but I cant afford to charter a boat to myself I'm just looking to book on a trip with a bunch of other guy's

I would be gratful for any advice

probably n the region of 130 -160 euro return you can fish for sharks at pedra de lume 20 mins from sal you can watch the sharks feeding over the coral its 650 euro for 8hrs marlin fishing

Just to point out, the Marlin may still be thin on the ground in February. It'll me 6 weeks early for them. May be a couple about, but not in the numbers of peak season.

If you can't get an answer out of TACV, then Cape Verde Travel (of Hornsea) may well be able to find you a price. I suspect it won't be cheap.
