spinning with braid

only a quick one as i'm slowly getting some lures together for next year for fishing off my kayak by either trawling or casting.
I have 20lb braid on my spinning rod would you tie this straight to the lure or attach 6 foot of flourocarbon before the spinner and if so how would you attach it? just use a small swivel or attach by knot?

i 'm asking as i don't know if the swivel 6 foot from the spinner will effect the action?

I normally use a swivel and attach that to the lure via a split ring and attach the braid to the swivel. I don't use fluorocarbon with braid when spinning.

Normally just use a tucked half blood knot but grinner also OK. Some people loop the braid through the eye of the swivel twice before doing a half blood knot.

I prefer to use a fusion type braid as the cheaper braid tends to give too much grief with tangles, though that is probably due to insufficient tension on the line during the retrieve.

I use 20lb braid straight through to a swivel/clip to which I attache my lures, and have never noticed any reduction in the action or catches! I normally use a Rapala knot, (two loops through the eye of the swivel, 3 times round the mainline back through the loops, and up through the loop made from taking the end from the mainline to the loops - spit and pull tight!) or occasionally a grinner, when I'm feeling lazy!

Once you have used braid, you wont want to use anything else! It really amplifies the experience, and you can literally feel every bump and tap!

I really am interested in this kayak fishing phenomenom! I think that I'm seriously going to have to look into it a bit deeper.

If you have any pointers that you can share, please let me know!

I use braid for spinning all the time and don't bother with a fluro leader, for heavy lures like dexters/tobys etc I use a small link clip swivel so I can change quickly. When I use lighter plugs and surface lures however, I get rid of the swivel and tie the lure directly to the braid. I watched the lures when using the swivel and found it was distorting the action by pulling the head down :fish:

i must say i'm a bit shocked, i would have thought that tying braid direct to the lure would be visible to the fish,...but that is just my uneducated perception. so i'll bow down to your experience and give it a go.
am i right in thinking that lure wise i should be going along the lines of dexter wedges, repala magnums, x-rap, j13 and yozuri crystal minnows


on the subject of kayaks frags all i can say is get one you won't regret it, they are so much fun and a lot more stable than you imagine.
think of all that coastline that is inaccessible to you.....not anymore
its not like having a boat either thats like throwing money into a hole once youv'e got the yak its free and the fishing that opens up is unbelieveable guys on the anglers net site were catching tope up to 60lb off them in west wales last year and one guy caught a 170lb skate in scotland!!!! and of course the lure and fly fishing is top notch

Rapala SLIVER definatly worth a go. Very good lure, especially when working deeper water from say, a kayak.

The way I see it is, when a fish finds a bait on the bottom it has a chance to look over it, have a sniff etc so keeping your snood as camoflauged as possible is an advantage in that case. When a fish see's your lure moving away, the fish has to make an instant decision whether or not to hit the lure otherwise it's just lost a meal. They don't have the same time to check over the bait like they do with static baits...thats my theory anyways! and I've never had a problem :)

And those lures look pretty good, you could add a few surface lures to your collection like the storm chug bug, rapala skitterpop or yo-zuri mag popper not had a fish on a surface lure (yet!) but I imagine it would be excellent! :D

I use a palomar as it's so simple and excellent with braid. One useful tip someone posted here was to wrap some amalgamating tape round the reel first to give the braid something to dig into to save the trouble of tying on a length of mono to the reel.

It's probably the best form of fishing!!!!:)

It's ideal for fishing over rough ground marks for bass etc. Much easier to get your snagged lures back too.

I spoke to Rapala a few months ago, their guy said to use a loop knot or a link to join their plugs, tieing direct to the Lure with a tight knot ( Braid or Mono ) affects the action, don't know how or why but if Rapala advise a link then thats good enough for me.

As shropfisher said,use loop direct to lure with fluro 2 - 3 ft trace, also John Wilson and Rex Hunt suggest this to be the way for maximise movement of lure.
