Tomorrow, the 23rd December and next saturday 30th December, I am running a casting class for anyone who wants to learn at Goodrington South Sands, Paignton, Devon. If you are embarrased at trying something new in front of others, I fully understand, and you can come and watch, ask questions, bring your camera, try some of the rods, (your reel, I'm not daft!), and you will be given a handout on the important points to understand about distance casting. These have never been published, and are copyright, so I don't expect to see them in a future issue of danglers monthly. The cost is nil, and insurance is taken care of. The session runs from 2.00 pm until 4.30 approx., and all are welcome, whether you believe or not, and if you have been before, it will be nice to see you again.

what an offer
any one who can attend I would recommend they do. I spent one afternoon with Phill and my eyes were opened, gone now are the days of ricking my back, going home with more aches than I started with and after putting in enough raw power into my casts to enter the worlds strongest man comp and reaching 120 yds, I can now employ the methods that Phill showed me and enjoy some real smooth casts and reach 160/170yds with ease. this all goes wrong if I try and be greedy but I feel sure that with practice the magical 200yd barrier will be achieved
That is a great offer Phil, wish I was closer.
Does anyone do casting lessons in Cumbria?
Great offer Phil - if I was within 150 miles I'd come!
Hope it goes well!
Merry Xmas!
You don't want to come to Essex for a Session :)

If anglers would like a visit to their area, if you are members of the NFSA then your club can request a visit. This could be done through your division. There may be finance available, we have visited South Wales and Penzance twice in the last 18 months primarily to look after young anglers, the older anglers come later when the young anglers have gone.
If you don't ask.....

Thanks to cain and Fanthom!
I've been in touch with Sea Angler and got the details of a couple of teachers in my area, so I'll probably give them a call in the meantime (can't wait for March). However I'll almost certainly come along to Kings Lynn too - would love to watch the pros doing it right!
That being said, I'm not sure I'm going to get a lot of extra distance, but I'm definitely interested in the safety aspects & the social stuff!
I've a dicky right hip (too much golf), but now getting about 150 yards (long strides?) with a 13' soft Simano Hyperloop and 5oz's in a field.

Don't worry about the hip.
Dave Vicary has just had a hip replacment, betcha he will still be walking way past that 200metre flag.
If your casting 150 yards, Cain will help you gain a bit more, i reckon another twenty yards pretty quick, then a bit more after a couple of lessons.

Aha ! in theory I am free on Saturday ( yippee! )
Would you like us to bring any rods that you probably would not (by default) bring - for example a Penn Extreme Light beach (2-4 oz, 12'6"), an old Conoflex Cobra (5oz, 13ft), a Gemini Uptide (3-6oz, 10'6") ?
and any odd or old reels (Penn 545Mag, Penn 555Mag, Shimano Calcutta 50, Abu2500CT)
for others to use or play with ? (I don't mind if someone birdsnests one - just means it won't be available for others to use)
looking at that list I realise you'd not want any of it around if your aim is showing/teaching standard beachcasting / tournament casts.
Does anyone know anyone or anywhere I can get lessons in Cumbria.
Got myself a new rod and reel setup for xmas (conoflex anubis plus & abu 7500) not that used to multipliers or big strong rods so have been struggling a bit the last couple of days, getting it a bit further and a bit straighter the more I try but don't want to pick up bad habbits. Just lobbing it at the moment - HELP!!!!

If you are thinking of coming down for a bit of a session, bring anything you like, I usually have 5 or 6 different rods for people to try. I teach Spincasting, and Flycasting as well as surf for those who want it.
I also have some ZrC tip rings for anyone who wants to try one, to give away, courtesy of the Importer. There are 5 left, all size 10/4mm tube.
I look forward to seeing anyone who wants to come along.

It puzzles me that all these organisations do not start their own threads, rather than jumping on one started by someone trying to improve peoples lot on their own...can I ask how many of the welsh lads are actually qualified, licensed and insured to coach and instruct?
I am, and can prove it. Are you?
Sounds like sour grapes, but in this litiginous world, it could be expensive to find out!

qualified!!!!!!! phil a lot of them welsh boys know what they are doing ( and not just with sheep). what welsh caster is trying to do is help people and save them money at the same time, also they might get the bug and join the club.
if people go to a club organised event they will either join the club or pay as a day caster, either way they will be covered on the clubs insurance.
sounds like sour grapes i think it definately is.
steady on now phil, don't go throwing the toys out the pram, as I live in glos devon is a bleeding long way to go mate, I was under the impression that this was an open forum for the benifit of all, and not your private message board.

I always thought that these forums were for open discussion and that sometimes the topics get a bit heated especially if there is a difference of opinion maybee thats what phil is after , getting folk mad so that they say things about him and then he can sue them and make loads of money .
As welsh caster says we dont know it all and I dont think that we ever will, but maybe each and everyone of us might know something a little bit different that can help some one out . at the end of the day we should be grateful that we have these boards to help spread information and opinions on all aspects of fishing .

(as endorsed by many )
I learnt to cast through a casting club and i must say its the best way to learn, not only do you get to meet the best casters in the country, you also meet some of the best sea match anglers
I belive clubs offer a lot to a newcomer wanting to improve their casting including
A well organised safe insured casting area
the benefit of learning from the best casters in the UK
The chance to try out tackle, reels etc
A great social event where you can meet new friends
The chance to win trophys if your good enough LOL
Accurate measuring on an official court
Im sure there is more
And the cost is around £6
Anybody who wants to cast further should try it superb......
Hi Phil,
Only just read your generous invite... I would deffo have come up (I'm in Plymouth) I need some tips mate! When you doing your next masterclass??

Every Saturday,Goodrington Sands, 2pm - dusk. Summer, Monday evenings, 7pm-dusk.
These sessions have been FREE for the past 15 years, and will remain so. And yes, Mike Birks started at these sessions with me, despite reports to the contrary. See VHS video 'Surf Rod Building' to see what Mike did to a rod!
So have hundreds of others not so well-known. I have checked with the Insurance , and yes you are covered while on the beach with me.:)
philtherod
mike also did 250 yards at his first event and ive seen him hit 312 in practice
phil do you now were i might be able to onfo on backcasting ?
philtherod
02-01-2007, 17:06
Mike actually did an eight- cast average on that day of 251 yards, which I don't think has ever been beaten. I was there and did a paltry 223 yards with a 150g lead (I've done further since in practice).
That was my last competitive event.
philtherod
Not to take anything from mike who is one of the very best.
But just to update you welshcaster had an 8 cast average at this years UKSF clubmans of 282yards

Phil,
From reading your threads and seeing how fanatical you are about Casting Instructors carrying the qualifications that you have, I assume that you NEVER gave any lessons until you had those qualifications?
Or was your case different?

been reading this thread with interest.i too cast at the surfcast wales event, and have been doing so for 15 years in total, under it's various guises.of those 15 years,i have been a casting insructor(sea angler recognised and listed)for 11 of them.i have never been "qualified" in as much as getting a piece of paper to say so,been insured ...apart from under sea anglers own for their instructors(fact or fiction i've never had to find out).phil the rod seems to be the only instructor around who has any "proper" qualifications,as i know of no-one else who does that i'm aware of.so does this mean that all the people who have been taught by instructors like myself should stop casting immediately....i think not!!!!!surely, being taught to cast safely by anyone, let alone by an instructor,is far better than someone being left to their own devices where the inevitable is gonna happen.for 5 years i taught men, women and children at a holiday park/fishing holiday how to cast,as well as tying rigs using correct knots and components, and bait presentation.of all of those that attended, not one didn't go away with a big smile on their face knowing they had learned something/improved their casting technique/distance.i know a few are members of this website, including ladies team wales manager, helen pierce.

It is not a coincidence that SLOICITOR is an anagram of a bit of a woman .... Solicitors prostitute their services for the highest money as well YOURS.
Sadly we are swiftly moving to the sue them for their socks culture where anyone can make money out of any one uninsured /accredited or qualified to a nationally recognised qualification.
So people like Phil are really only protecting themselves and those they help.
It is getting so ridiculous that your as likely to be sued for breaking wind in front of a certain religious race as that when you punch the lights out of the local tow rag you catch in your home.
We only have to see the evidence in our forums of those intent in scoring points from others to realise that even we sea anglers are getting swept along the abrasive route of life in general.
Remember Sally 's bit about the perils of not doing the recognised things when training /working with people under 18 or the warnings about first aid and knowing who you are working with . PC gone mad a bit but also a sound course to follow.
Being accredited and insured etc. can either make you and easy target for suing or make it very difficult IF you follow the procedures.
Not being accredited and insured means you wouldn't reasonably have a leg to stand on if the vultures get near you .
I have been an accredited trainer since 1983 and used to work with so called ex criminals and ex young offenders.
Seeing some of the things I know of and some I had direct experience with I am amazed that compulsory registration , training and full insurance has not been on Cherie's and Uncle Tony B's ( both are solicitors) election list since day one for anybody that does any thing to earn money other than as a PAYE employee (and even then a lot of those would need have it .)
Don't let's go slagging each other off for the way things are or the way they are going.
Just adapt the situation to the best one for you and get along with each other.
Rant over.
DAVID

Good summary of the changing world we live in, David.
I'm almost surprised casting instructors don't have to insist on ID to show that everyone they train is over 18 ....so they -the instructors- don't have to register on a professional child-trainers list and be investigated by Police and Social Services (at their own expense, of course).
It's enough to make you sneak off to a deserted beach and fish on your own !
