A Cod roe, Jamie is the female egg sack containing millions of tiny eggs :)
The cod is well renown for being a highly fercund (lots of babies) fish species. I have only ever seen ling (like a cod Jamie, but long and thin with big teeth) with bigger roe.
The male roe (known as "chitts") is also eaten but not as commonly. It only ever fetches a few pence/kg while cod roe is usually worth more by the kg than the cod it came out of.

Took one (cod roe) home to the old dear once and her eyes lit up. Her mother used to cook it for her just after the war (WWII) and she said how she used to love it.
Boiled it for a bit to harden it, then sliced and fried as suggested. Well; still makes me gag just thinking of eating it. One of, if not THE worst things i have ever eaten.

Best way to cook is to put in muslin and boil a while (Cant remember how long as a while since I did it) You can then eat as it is or fry in flour/batter absolutely superb...Better than the cod itself!!

Funny how one mans meat is another mans poison.

I absolutely love Cod roe. In fact most roes are very tasty - my favourite being soft Herring roes , lightly fried in butter and served on toast with a sprinkling of salt and vinegar - YUMMY !!

good eatin that roe is.
have to boil it first before slicing.

4 slices cod roe
2 tbsp plain flour
2 tbsp oil
2 eggs
pitta bread

Method
1. Dip the slices of cod roe in flour.
2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the cod roe until crisp. Remove and drain on kitchen towels.
3. Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the eggs. Remove and keep warm.
4. In the same pan, fry the pitta bread in the oil until golden.
5. To serve, place the fried eggs on top of the pitta bread and top with the crisp cod roe.
