Hello all,

My wife and I are off to the Gambia 31st Jan for 2 weeks staying at kololi (holiday beach club). While the lady is sunbathing at the pool Im gonna be beach casting at sanyang & Tanji during the day. Any one else out there during this period? Would be good to share 4x4 costs etc.

Have a good trip - I got back mid December. Look forward to hearing how you got on. They say the beach just outside your hotel can be productive, especially in evening. Captain Fish being caught there when I was there last month. If you get the chance do the Roots trip - great day out to see the real Gambia.

I just hope its gonna be as good as in previous years.... Ive had some lovely Guitarfish to 25lb, Lady fish best 14lb and stingray not sure how heavy but me and a friend over 3 days had 12 whoppers all ripping line from the multipliers (never use your thumb to try and slow them down whilst they run it BURNS), I guess they had to be in region of a least 40lb each... some fish to try and lift.

Fingers crossed

Got back 2nd Jan, caught 36 pound Guitar, ladyfish, butterfish, grouper, catfish and others i dont know there names.

Fished to the right of kotu point. (Call in at the Kotu Point Beach Bar, ask for Morgan, he is a great lad. If you see him give him my regards. If you need prawns and bonga fish for bait, he will get them for you).

Loved the whole Gambian experience, will return again soon.
I used Tom and Assan as guides as recommended by stonefish. We had agreat day's fishing.
I caught more from shore than of the boat.:boat:

Hope you have a good time.

Regards

Glen.

Sounding quite promising is it rough ground near kotu point? and where exactly is it? I stayed at Kombo Beach Hotel many years ago so I know this area. Ive only ever fished Tanji, Sanyang & denton bridge.

If you are sat facing out to sea from Kotu Beach Bar.Go left down the beach about 50m. It is sand there.
If you ask Morgan in the bar, he will tell you where i fished. Just ask him where did Glen fish.

If you don't go far enough down the beach, you will get snagged by the rocky reef.

Tight lines:yeah:

Sounds about right where you describe. I personally have never done much good from the hotel areas either hence the trek to Sanyang, however Im gonna try kotu point after the previous posts.
I prefer Sanyang anyway nice peacfull remote beach with no hasselers. Take plenty of water with you if you go saves packing up to find a shop.
Also if you hire a 4x4 taxi like i do make sure it actually drives all 4 wheels.... My driver once managed to sink in some soft sand then admitted its not been used in 4x4 mode for years and we had to get towed out.

Hi,
Got taxi (4x4!!) from the tourist taxi ranks they stay with you all day and keep you safe you can move wherever you want and charge a set price for the journey there & back (Sanyang) plus a waiting time charge which is not a lot. Last went there 1 year ago and I belive it was around £15-20 for the day. If you fancy moving 500metres up the beach just chuck your gear in the back and yell when to stop. fantastic way of learning the coastline all on your own. Dont forget to get plenty of ice when getting your bonga fish bait from Tanji (on the way) cos it soon goes off in that lovely heat your driver will haggle for you. I always take a mini chopping board & knife for filleting bait, essential cos its difficult to get one there.

The nearest hotel to Kotu Beach Bar is Sunset Beach.

Going out on the 23rd to Palm Grove.
Will be fishing the beach in front of Palm Grove as much as I am allowed.
Done all the running around on previous trips and want to see if I can relax and enjoy a rest and still catch something memorable.
If I can persuade the wife to bring out a cold beer every hour I,ll be sorted !!.

Yes , we fished the same spot the last 2 hours before sunset to high water and had captainfish to 6lb. Always a chance of bigger fish. Only trouble is that you can attract a bit of a crowd. Met Flexi also.
If you want to try other beaches try my guides Tom and Assan, Tel: +2207781160. Proper fishing guides who know their stuff.

hi all new to this site, but not to Gambia, on the last trip (Nov06) i had some cracking captains off the beach right behind the hotel, (Bungalow beach) all high doubles and 2 nearer 30lbs,

http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/bulletin%20board/album_search.php?mode=user&search=paddyc

lots of jacks biggest was just shy of 10lbs, plenty of ladys of atlantic beach near the grave yard end, and some hard fighting queen fish from bakau point also spinning, and as usual lots of small cats, sting ray, pompano etc,,,. I did hear that Bigilo beach has fished well since and i would deff recomend BIG BAITS where ever you fish 4 or 5 prawns at least mounted on
5-6,o,s. I did get smashed off with something that i presume didnt even know it was hooked a few times compared to others presenting smaller baits. Another item worth a try is Ultra-bite in bothe General sea fish, and Bass flovours, also worth a go is to try catch some of the white Ghost crabs and whipp them on live the big fish really go at them hard!!!
Best of luck on the trip, Hope this helps, Paddy

sorry about all the questions but did you only fish at night? Is it worth fishing during the day? Ive only really fished at sanyang & Tanji (daytime) and done good over the years.

The way i see it is... Its like a game only they dont tell you the rules or where the game is going to be played...!! IMO it didnt seem to matter ive had good days and good nights, its prob more of a personal choice.
