Last year I bought a Fox travel beach caster. It breaks down into short sections and is superb. I just wondered if anyone could recommend a Spinning rod that is similar, say 9 -10 ft capable of casting decent bsized plugs and lures but breaks down small and comes in a case.

Have a look at the shimano exage s.t.c range, they fit your description perfectly. I use a 270mh which is brilliant, can't fault it at all. All reasonably priced too :fish:

I agree that the exage range are good, I have the 270 & the 330, the 330 is a good jack of all trades & will do most things except beachcasting. I've given mine a good bashing spinning & float fishing I've even lobbed 4oz grippre leads off harbour walls with it.

For plugging I like to use an abu 10' spinning rod, light as a feather & nice & stiff & springy, I suppose that the feel of a rod is a personal preference thing.

I can believe that! These rods - although very sensitive - are very strong, I have used my 270mh to lift wrasse to almost 3lb up around 6ft of rock so I could grab it! I wouldn't recommend doing it but it does give some idea of the power in these rods! :fish:

I totally agree with the exage 270. Never had the chance to try it out properly until last month. Went on holiday and manged a few Trevallies and one in the 9lbs with relative ease.

Very responsive and casts well.

I bought the shakespere purist spin and I love it. It casts heavy lures ideal weight ive found is about 30g.Its a well made 4 piece which you can get for about £45.00 on the net. Goes together well, and the handle and reel seat are really comfortable, lifted 4lb fish onto the rocks with it as well

Check Veals for the Mike Ladel Surespin MK11 as well.

Not used one but it gets rave reviews and is 34 inches in length and comes in a travel tube thingy.

About £70

greys travel spin is a good rod, with tube etc, plus a lifetime warranty.

Depends what you're using it for. I have an Exage and it's fine in over here for bass and mackerel, and abroad for stuff up to 10lb. If you're looking for something to take abroad for bigger or stronger fish such as trevallies or tarpon over 20lb I would recommend the Greys Missionary 9ft 4-piece. Casts 30-100g, very strong, comes in a a tough cordura tube that fits into a suitcase. About £120 if you shop around. I use one and it's superb for both spinning and livebait fishing, and OK for light boatwork too. Try before you buy as the foregrip is a little short if you have big hands.

PS: that's independent advice; I have no tie-up with Grays or anyone else!

I do have a tie-in with Greys............

But to back up, that 30-100g Missionary is a good bit of kit, I have tried my hardest to break it bu thave not managed so far. Managed to take coalfish to about 35lbs on one when filming boat fishing in Norway, plus big cod, rod did an excellent job.

Great for rock-edge wrassing, pollack fishing etc.

But I did get 100% smoked by a good GT on one, my fault really, asking too much of the rod.

I've got the 9' 15-35gm version of the Greys Missionary Spin which I'm well pleased with. For fishing around the south and east coast it's great. However if I were to go on any trips abroad in the future where larger fish would be targeted I would certainly be tempted to go for the 30-100gm version of the rod. The solid travel tube is an additional point in its favour.

Henry G
(sorry to butt into the forum sideways) ... do you use braid or mono for your heavy spinning overseas? Everyone seems to rave about using it abroad but I'm kind of wary after losing big fish in rock and coral. It seems to fray far too easily for my liking. Answer on a postcard!

Ron Thompson Steelhead 11ft 20-60g. Cheap, good action, tough (IM6) and full cork handle. May not be a fashionable choice. I bought one as a exploring rod where damage is a concern, cheap to replace. I've had it 2 years and use it all the time where decent fish are likely, has a slightly longer butt and makes playing a big fish more comfortable. Landed a 15lb 3oz mirror carp with it on crust last summer just for a jest. The ABU conolon sits gathering dust.

Looks like Henry's gone fishing Mark. I take your point about using mono rather than braid when there's coral or rocks about but am curious as to what size spinning reel do you use to load it onto?

Wife and I both have the 210 exage's. Note of caution, second time out mine shattered mid cast (only casting 16g). To be fair, Veals (where I bought it) exchanged it without question. I don't know if this was an exceptional case or if others have had a similar problem?

Thanks for the advice guys, i finally settled for a Fox "Trek" 9'6" (40-100g). I have the beachcaster from the same range and it is excellent. Hopefully this rod will be just as good.

Hi Lucky,
I've paired the Greys with a Shimano 8000-sized FS loaded with 20lb mono for plugging abroad; I also use it for bassing in Poole Harbour with a 5000-size Shimano Catala and 17lb braid.
I'm off to Cuba again this spring so will be able, I hope, to try for the monsters plugging from the shore.

.... sorry, this thread's going all over the place!

Cheers Mark - I was thinking you would need at least an 8000 to hold enough 20lb to 30lb mono - will look forward to the Cuba report.

Tight lines.

BTW Mark here's a little story just to bring this thread back to the original topic of travelling spinning rods - I'd been seriously thinking about getting one of those Greys Missionary Spin 30-100gm rods for some time to use abroad and also here in the UK as a bass/estuary rod. As I said in one of my earlier posts I really like the 15-35gm version of the rod which I already have. Henry's and your comments about the rod on this thread finally made my mind up but not really wishing to pay £159.99 RRP I decided to have a look around on ebay over the coming months to see what popped up - I'd actually seen one go for about £95 about 18 months ago when I was looking for my lighter one. Well, lo and behold one came up for auction about a week after reading your posts. I had originally intended waiting a few months before buying one but then it occurred to me that just after Xmas in January might not be all that a bad time to bid for a spinning rod - it was just too difficult to resist and anyway another one might not have come up again for quite a while so I stuck it in my watched items. I knew I'd be at the computer just when the auction time expired so I sat back and waited for a few days and watched - the bidding wasn't looking too frenetic but of course you simply don't know what someone's got in reserve. With the top bid sitting at £70 I finally placed a bid with only 38 seconds to go in the auction. The rod's brand spanking new - I picked it up for £72! :whistling

Thanks for the advice Mark. You too Henry.

That's the plan mate or to be more specific - something large and angry somewhere hot - however its first outings will probably be along the Thames between Kew and Teddington just to get used to the action and then down to Brighton Marina for a bit of plugging and float fishing. For the "somewhere hot" stuff I'm probably going to need a bit of advice as regards a suitable reel but there's plenty of time for that.

Have a great time in Cuba in Spring - thanks again.

I spent 2 days last week phoning tackle shops trying to get the 30-100g Missionary spin. All i kept getting was, sorry discontinued... cant get them anymore.

Then I phoned Greys themselves.. same reply, then they put me through to their shop (Anglers Corner). A one minute wait, then told we have ONE left, currently on display.. mine for the bargain price of 89.95 delivered :clap2:

Chuffed or what!!!!!!

Glasgow Angling Centre still have them on their site at a slightly reduced price of £136.16 - don't know if they actually have any in stock though. Personally I'd bide my time - one will come up on ebay sooner or later. Sorry can't help about the Shimano at the moment.

None at Glasgow Angling Centre, one of the first places i tried. Lots of sites show the rods in their adverts, frustratingly out of date as i found out!!

Yup, i think Ebay is your best bet...

The 30/100g version is quite stiff... hopefully it will cast lures towards the lower end of its casting range ok, as i have many around the 30g mark.
