how do people know how far they cast without measuring?.?
loads of people state the distance when they type a catch report for example.. "caught a codling of 3lb on lug at 90yards", so i was wondering how they know?
distances over open water are very deceving in daylight let alone darkness. i wouldnt like to say how far i've cast even if i saw it hit the water! and i'll never be able to tell just by looking at how much line left the spool.
someone past me on the beach once and saw me catch a bass. he asked me how far out i caught it, i said "i have no idea, obviously far enough" he then said... "well was it 50, 60, 80, 100 yards? you must know???" i then asked him how would i be able to tell. he was stumped and gave up asking.
so does anyone have a special way of judging distance

i dunno either, i know a good cast will empty about 2/3rds of my .35 diameter line on my full mag elite spools, other than that, i'm guessing, cos i've never measured a proper cast,
it`s all guess work, the only time you no how far you`ve gone is on a field.
I find if you are consistant in your casting as in length of time your feeding off, if i count the turns when i reel in i allow a foot to every two turns, so six turns is a yard and so on this can be helpful at night, not that i often do this but if i want to know thats one way i quesstimate it, and the fact i usually aim at the same point on the same marks which i have previously guaged aloows me to understand how far i am out. But i also think at night there is no real way to understand where you are or how far, just luck i think.

i,ve had people come to me for casting lessons who said they were casting say for instance---150yds, or maybe--175yds. so i often placed a flag at whatever distance they qoted. the look of shock on their faces when they looked up when they were preparing to cast and saw the flag was a treat.
one in paticular just could not hit the 200yd mark untill i put the marker out to 212yds without telling him. his next six casts were over 200yds,- he now has cast in excess of 240yds. that was an occasion when i learned something from the pupil
had the same with lads saying how far they are casting
one time at hall road liverpool i ask a few lads how far it was to big marker from the prom
we got 150yd 130yds 165yds but no one said less than it is in fact the closest was 12yd to long as i got a lazer range finder out and it came back at
118yds so you see most think they cast longer than they do fact..

the simplest none technical measurer to use is a copy of the old r.s.m,s pace stick as used by lionell stead at n.w. casting before he went technical with a laser device. --i won one in a raffle at the club, made by len [fingers] williams.
it was two pieces of wood fixed together with a bolt and wing nut at the top. it had a cross bar which ,when attached formed a triangle, the tips of the bottom of the triangle measured exactly 1 yard. it may be a bit old fashiond, but it kept you fit walking up and down the field.--- ive had mine for years
hey bill, i can remember that at kendal, saw one on the antique roadshow..lol, lol.

Found the perfect device just for this in LIDL store. Called a "Deepfinder", it's meant for attaching to a boat rod to find depth, holes, pits, etc.
After casting I attach it to the rod, the line goes round a pulley wheel which drives a digital readout via gearing (line goes under, not over pulleywheel). I bought 2, at a couple of pounds each. There is a webside address on the box,
www.fantastic-for-fishing.com , which I haven,t yet had a chance to try, thought I'd try it and post first.
DON'T cast with the line round the pulley! I take the device off the rod after winding in. I ought to add it measures in whole metres.

Correct me if im wrong but don't Daiwa make a line that changes colour every so many yards so that you can measure your distance?

if you use a digital measure [wind on ] surely your line would have to be pulled very tight before you wind in, especially if you were using fixed spool in a slight cross- wind otherwise you could clock up a distance that would scare the daylights out a few big hitters i know.

No you just put it between 2 rings - line remaining under tension throughout retrieve.

I've taken a couple of digipics of the device...can someone tell me how to load a thumbnail or two?

They need to be resized phil but when you post a reply click the little paperclip.
Or just email them to me and i'll do it for you.
for practise casting purposes to get an idea of how I am doing ,I do this. Take 2 sticks or posts and push them into your lawn exactly 10 yards apart, attatch your lead clip to one of them and then walk round winding as many times as you want between them putting different cloured stop knots at the desired distances. I put one at 200 and one at 225 . If your cast is somewhere between the 2 then just pace it out. not 100% accurate but will give you a good idea of whether you are improving or not.

so does anyone have a special way of judging distance Look at the amount of line that has come off your reel, cast further less line on the reel, thats how i tell how far i can cast, hope this is of some help

that must be before you let another 30 or 40 yards of line off to help the wires dig-in ;)

As far as I know, the only one like that they make is the "Accudepth" Braid. Superbraid.
I have a few hundred yards of the 30lb stuff on my Penn 525 (with mono over the top)
I seldom check the exact amount of line out for shore fishing - in this case I am just trying the line out (I think it is fairly good) and it happens to be coloured.
You will know when you hit a good cast, when you stand watching your lead climb up at 45 degrees, curl over and start to fall towards the sea, your reel screaming until it hits the water.
Great feeling.
Then you get a fish, it's time to reel in, by the time it's half way in your arms start to ache, the 3lb fish on the end feel like a 8lb fish, the rain lashing down your neck, you fingers beginning to freeze, eventually 5 minutes later you get the fish on the beach.
Ending up somewhat wetter, colder, and a bit weaker, you have smiles all over your face, ready to whack the next one out to the horizon.
All great stuff, until your beat up with stacks of weed instead of fish. Then you soon learn to cast closer to the shore...lol

:boat: :boat: :boat: hi m8 i have a mag elite now for yrs and untill i saw this post about distance made me think. how many magnets if any do you leave in your reel/and i use in summer 15lb winter here in s.wales 20lb .what sort of distance should we get out of our reels with 20lb line on and a full baited up rig?i am happy with my reel at the mo with all the magnets in but would i be better off taking 1 out?cheers tightlines ANDY ILSF..:boat: :boat: :boat:
When I do Emergency Stop lessons in the car I ask my pupils to pick out something about 23 metres from the car, and they point to stuff that is anywhere between 10 and 50 metres away! :uhuh:
I can roughly guess my distances, but they are generally only accurate to about plus or minus 20 metres, but when you see some anglers claim they can hit 100 yards, it looks more like 50 to me. :)
Bottom line - most people are pants when it comes to estimating distance. :D
i use the football field method. if i can comfortably kick a ball the distance i cast then its about 50-70 yards. anything other than that is purely guess work although i know that the cast i lobbed out last sunday was at least 100 yards coz it took the knot where i tied lines together out of the spool.

if it goes 34 times the length of the biggest Cod I've caught, I know it's over 100yards
ROFLMAO !
