Second meeting of the club was held on Monday night and was a great success.
Many new events have been planned and members put forward excellent new suggestions - thanks to everyone who attended and contributed so wholeheartedly.
The first of these new events has been announced below under the title of Live Fish (almost) TCT Charity Fish and I know from the previous two that it will be popular, fun to watch or enter and in addition hopefully raise some cash for an underfunded charity. Please everyone have a look to see what it's all about and join in if you can :).
Can I ask the moderators to sticky this new SAS thread please and drop the old one to save people wading through pages and pages to get up to date info?

Many thanks on behalf to all our members to the WSF for their help via this web site in establishing our fishing community. Long may the mutual support continue!

Just got back from Widewater beach. Looks sooooooooooooo "fishy" but to no avail.
Lug and slipper failed to catch anything but weed ... and then lost last shock leader + favourite lead and rig. For once decided to save what precious little energy remains to me :)
Not as rough as last time I fished there but although there was little weed washed up the beach the water is in fact loaded :uhuh: I thought the West Arm would be too rough but perhaps I should have stuck to the devil I know.
Any members manage to get out today - keen to hear if anyone caught anything?

Bollywood couple are fine thanks. In Fact we had a secret rendevous at widewater this afternoon by the beach huts. Only so I could get a hour away from painting the hall . 8 bl**dy doors off the hall.

Good to see you as always on Monday........

Any members manage to get out today - keen to hear if anyone caught anything?

I was actually thinking of trying widewater area over low as it was a high low (1.7m) and the wind dropped for a few hours yesterday evening. Instead I tried Hove beach where my lead ket getting dragged east and buried. It was like getting a massive lump of weed on the line but when I got it in it was clean. Exact same thing happened to me last week. Any ideas why this is?

Anyway after 2 casts I moved west to Carat's Cafe for a 90 min session. The sea looked perfect (sooooo fishy as you say) for a low tide session with decent surf but only about 10 mph wind. I had 2 good sessions at this spot in Nov/Dec in these conditions. Nice bucket full of mixed age slipper limpet and.....

I blanked. To be honest I've only caught 1 Bass in the last 3 weeks despite about 8 short sessions, so perhaps I should accept the evidence.

The only time I've experienced anything like that was at Chesil where the line gets buried in the shingle at the breaker line because the beach shelves so steeply, but I can't imagine it's that steep at Hove. Perhaps the bottom has been so churned up with the more or less constant rough weather that the sand is soft and the the lead is sinking into it? Can't think of anything else but I I'd be interested if anyone else has a theory.
As to lack of fish, perhaps they themselves are fed up of being battered about and moved off lol. I did notice past week that the limpit supply has dropped off so it may be a case of there not being any loose food being left for the waves to pulverise.
I think we could do with a little calmer weather for a short while - never happy us anglers are we? :)

That's where it happened to me last week when I got snapped up 3rd cast after 2 arm breaking efforts to get it in the previous 2 casts. As I said, rig completely clean when I got it in. I think it's a low tide phenomenon and soft ground would be consistent with the experience. Sorry if this is getting off thread topic but at least it's local.

Its because the harsh sea's churn and shelve the the beach in an abnormal way thats all.............just got to tension your line every 5 Min's to alleviate the problem.........anyways you should be pulling it in every 20 to refreash your bait.

I doubt if I'll be awake from night shift by then, but I do plan to get a some bait so doubtless I'll look in down the arm :)
I think Daz was looking for some fishing company and perhaps Dave, Bill, Jim and Mike will be there as they frequently are during the week ( the older guys fishing near the end) [hope they don't mind my description  ].

Just in case anyone didn't receive their news update and to announce it to all anglers on the WSF, this Friday's BIG
"Almost Live" Fishothon is on course and promises to be our most prestigious event yet!

Wither or not you can actually fish on the night you can still take part by tuning in to the Almost Live thread on the WSF web site. Weather conditions promise to be challenging but I'm sure our anglers can handle all that mother nature throws at them in the cause of charity and everyone will benefit from the widest and most up to date fish report on the net.
Latest news in, is that after more hard work by Mike Harwood, Talk Sport's Keith Arthur is reporting on the event and we are pushing the news out as far afield as possible.

Please, everyone, members (especially Mike) have put a lot of effort into this and it can only be positive for the club and raise our profile another notch, so lets make sure it's as successful as we can. Mention it to friends, work collegues, family, down the pub, on the street, to other anglers - in fact carry a placard ! lol and don't forget that important charity phone number:

09069560128
The line is open already, and most of the 75p call goes to Teenage Cancer Trust, the club takes nothing from this.

I hope everyone enjoys the show and check our website:

Nice one, more good PR. With my press hat on, we need another release to go to the daily papers as soon as possible actually showing the charity phoneline number. Might also be worth mentioning like "30 plucky sea anglers brave the storms for tenage cancer trust fundraiser" In my past experience people like all the info instantly without emailing third parties. What do you reckon?

I think you're right Sean, good for us, good for WSF and good for the charity. I think Tony will be in touch ( if hasn't already with his usual efficiency) about the possibility of taking a few shots for the press of some anglers "braving it".
Only thing that concerns me, should we get daily paper coverage, is the phone line - it can only handle one call at a time and any large scale coverage is likely ( I would hope) to jam the line.
I don't know what the other guys think, but I reckon that this time at least we'll have to settle for after the event reporting to anything but locals. That in itself could be very beneficial by extending phone line time though :). Please go ahead and talk to Tony and we'll come up with an agreed formal press release. :fish:

Agreed, a release to the local dailies such as the Argus. Can we get an official comment from the TCT about Mike's / SAS's event? A bit sharpish? Im thinking something along the lines of "We are extremely gratefull to the Shoreham Angling Squad blah, blah......."

I will take along my little waterproof digital camera for some rough and ready shots.

Missed the Sea Angling News deadline, but we got into the Sea Angling Magazine with photo, thanks to Sean's talents behind the lens.

Need to promote the fishathon more, telephones now come with a redial button and the press 5 facility if the line is engaged. The more the phone calls the better, lets get off to a flying start and raise loads of money for the TCT.

The more we can do the better to raise our profile, it will give us more ammunition when going to see the Port Authority.

I was planning to fish today but some yellow stuff of the liquid kind hit the duvet from one of our dogs as we found at shut eye time last night so I had to spend some time in a blinking laundrete" a spelling ???" cleaning our duvet today as it was too big to fit in the chuffing washing machine. So there is no fishing report from me...I spent 5 quid on a bleeding wash and that could have given me a good couple of packs of worm and I ended up chatting to a lady in a shell suit and patent shoes who was very interesting:blink: . It will still go ahead Tony - we are committed ( or will be "committed") bunch. I don't think the men in the white coats work on a Friday night so we should be ok till the morning :D .
I'm sure if any venue gets too dodgy to fish then the teams doubtless have a back-up plan, but at the moment it looks just about ok to fish - even if nearing the limits.
Should make for very interesting reporting

Faster than I can order fish from Tescos lol, I have heard nothing but good regarding Baits Direct. I wonder if at some future date, assuming such continued good service, we could negotiate a small discount for members in return for official recommendation and endoresment? Too much on our plates at the moment, but worth adding to agenda at future meetings I think.
I'd like to get maximum benefit for our members :)

Good idea, but even better would be to try and get a good discount for really bulk orders, I can e-mail Graham Gurton, with a suggestion if you like, we need to put this to the members and them maybe place a regular monthly or bi monthly order what ever is needed ,suggest that when bank account is set up members pay into it what their bait requirements are and we send off a bulkie, take it we will have a credit card?

I'm not sure about any cards, personally I would rather leave that to Grahame to decide as treasurer. One person in control of finances = clear accounting and better control. Bulk buying is a possiblity, but we'll have to wait for a while until we have some more time and credibility behind us.
I'm over the moon that everyone is working so hard for the club, but I don't want us to over-stretch ourselves. I'll make sure the bait question is on the agenda for next meeting though and as you say let the members debate and decide. If we go for that idea ( and I do think it's a good one) would you be prepared to co-ordinate requirements Graham? We'd definitely have to have some hard and fast rules regarding payment on this one. Lookforward to the debate :)

Andy, me and me brother " Danglingdaz" used to use that shop "Johns" when we were kids. Cheers Daz for rememinding me of the name of the shop, he used to sell us single hooks and Daz reminded me today that I used to give him some beef if he lost a hook...well it was a lot of dosh then when you had not much cash and we fished with a 10 ft split cane rod that our grandad gave us. Also in " Johns" he would sell you a single ciggy and he never sold bait...as it could be dug near the thrupenny bit" spelling?" which is opposite the Shoreham light house and we would get loads of ragworm...in fact more than you can shake a stick at. I reckon if you try and dig there now the only thing you will get is either fit or a back problem looking for the rag.
It is such a shame that we have seen such changes in 25 years...oh my god that seems a long time, however there has been a lot and when I think back I really hate it... I or should I say we...wish it fished and dug like then again" now"everywhere!:) :) :)

There is a post on the Live charity Fishathon from an angler in Somerset who wants to get involved in the next event, I have PMd him with details and suggested that he sets up a member to update any thread compiled by mike
BUT what if we could get this going as a National event with each area doing their own thing on the same date and running one Post to compile all results, All donations to TCT of course, I have a contact in the South West who I believe would be more than happy to join in . Main thing is that we dont make more work for mike, he only runs the SAS input and other areas do the same either on their own Post or on one for the country,
Interest is obviously spreading and will be a good publicity point for the club
What do you think, can only be a great advantage and more donations to TCT

Wish I'd known Sean - just gave away a load of lugworm, slippers and peeler crab when I finished couple of hours ago.
It wasn't good at all down there this afternoon. Fished from 1 - 6pm and only saw four fish all day, 2 rockling and couple of flounders. (I waited until Grahame was packing up to catch the flounder :D ). flounders on slipper limpet again.
Would suggest you use long flowing trace and keep it moving few inches every 5 mins to coax them out. :)

I was there over that period and definitely no fish even approaching that size lol.
I'd guess it was my one, caught about 4pm. It certainly wasn't substancial enough to warrent weighing - probably just under 1.5lb. Joe was there from 8am and packed up before me ( I left at 6) and confirmed that nothing had been caught all day. so unless it was caught between 6pm and 9pm I think the mystery solved. Amazing how these things "grow" over time eh? :lmao:
3lb flounder and I'd certainly be jumping up and down, be a personal best!

How about a clean up and a fishing thing on either the 3rd or 4th of Feb?. Yeh or neh!...And what day would you like...Sat 3rd or Sun 4th?...

Cheers

Meeting up to plan next clean up and other stuff on 3rd Tony, so probably a bit soon for me, though 4th is a possibility, I'll let you know nearer to the time. No reason why any member can't call for a session though and as many as would like to go turn up:)
I'm a bit crook at the moment, but I'll ceratainly make it if I can.

Hi Sean,

Hope you had better luck than me this afternoon, got down on the Arm at 06:00am and without a hangover, your text was quiet amusing, anyway, 6 fishermen, two rods each, 36 hooks, nothing, blanked, everyone. Packed up at 10:00am bored, fed up and saving my bait for a beach session on Tuesday, when hopefully something may take an interest in my prime lug.

One thing I did notice was the amount of Rockling left on top of the wall, all dead, is this a new sport, am I missing something here, found some dead on the bottom lower step as well, can’t surely be storm deaths, maybe “Wormshed” is trying to make a point (sic). :secret:

loads of fisherman still on the arm when we left :clap3:

I left home on Saturday and dropped into Compass Marine in Lancing to grab some lug. Apparently there is still none about so i ended up with some rag. Drove along to the arm and was greeted by a beautiful blue sky and sunshine. There was only one other angler fishing two rods on the end. Too good to be true.

It was then i looked over the inside lower level and noticed at least ten recently caught and dumped rockling. I have to say this really annoyed me. A total lack of respect for the fish, the arm and fellow anglers. Put the creatures back alive please. :clap3:

After a friendly chat with the other bloke I set up and cast inside. Not even a nibble, so i drank some coffee instead. Danglingdaz arrived and further chatting ensued. He got his Mk.1 Sweetie tin cooker going and i er, drank some coffee.

I was regurlarly changing baits but still no joy. Towards 2pm the arm had filled up nicely, then Mesito and his lovely lady and pet dog arrived for a chat. Mesito kindly made me up a flowing trace type widget out of the odds and sods in my tackle box (we should call him McGyver) and even cast out for me. So there it was, confirming im a numpty at fishing. Using the wrong rig on the wrong side of the breakwater.

Five minutes after Mesito left a young whipper snapper caught a large flounder using the same rig in the same spot at the same location i was at before i swapped tactics. Bugger!!! He deserved it though as he tidied up the rockling i mentioned earlier. Very encouraging sight.

I stayed on untill 430pm then had to run off to fit my mates van window. First blank of the year. Looks like my post 2007 silky blanking skills have returned:blink:

No shame in blanking matey, we have all done it, some more than others though ( myself included) Even Mesito came very close to it on Friday.

I am going to have to start catching soon though as my missus thinks I am up to something.. I told her "what with my legs "..

Popped down the arm this afternoon ......about 10 anglers on the arm.....met SAS Member 80 (jon) and Dad ....All using Lug,king, makie and sqid.....but alas nowt to report.....noticed the sea is not as coloured as it has been.........so harbour rag and crab baits seem to be the order of the day........long snoods and flouro beads might help for those fat flatties

Well one hour down tide, four hours fishing, nothing, 9 hooks on three rods, God knows how many variations of bait, not even a hint of a knock, let alone a rattle, so it's going to have to be Pevensey on Thursday, even just to stock up on black lug.

Perhaps that bloody survery boat had something to do with the fishing, up and down the mouth, oh well, spring approaches.

Would love to have had some of your bait and company, but may well have signed up a new member, guy just moved here from Southampton, was disgusted with the state of the arm, so I did a small sales job on him. Going to PC World this week to get some "calling cards", so we can use them to give out to potention members.

I don't think anything would have worked this morning, not even your bait, me things someone has been trawling the beach again.

Doubtless some members may have been following the various threads regarding a friendly meet between clubs/groups of anglers from Dorset, Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex.
The general idea is for a friendly series of comps between the 4 counties, fished over 4 months (one a month) between 4 teams.
Despite some niggling over rules and details I think this has now been mostly sorted out and I am looking for members to represent us / W Sx for these events.

I stress it is above all FRIENDLY!, there are no prizes involved - just a chance to meet other anglers with similar aims and have a good fun day (if people want side bets then that's between them lol).

The date for the Dorset meet has already been fixed as 28th April at West Bexington (far west end of Chesil) and will be followed in May June and July with a meets in Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex (venues to be confirmed according to fishing prospects nearer the time).

General rules are up to 2 rods per angler, max total 4 hooks, catch and release ( with option to keep fish for pot of course), no weavers mackerel or eels to count.
Will either be done by fish length or points for length/species. Either way it doesn't matter just a great way to meet new faces, discover new venues for some perhaps and gain tips and ideas.

Will any member interested please pm or email me and I'll make a list of names sometime later next month and post them up.
Going to be a hoot guys and our first oportunity to meet with newly formed DAB group :yeah:

These tins are made of very mild steel / tin ? and they will not last a long time so the wing nuts may give way at some point " great idea though"...I place them on a couple of bricks when I use them on the arm...1 it stops the tarmac from melting...2 you can adjust the airflow from the bottom so it does not burn to fast when it is going...3 if they do get a bit of rust the bottom will not fall out on that all important fishing trip. Patent pending:) .

No, he saved his rods and reels luckily. Unusual that the dredger came straight close in first pass and with it's gear down. Usually they signal their intentions first before starting.

When I arrived this morning the survey boat was not there and I took a sigh of relief, but hey ho! an hour later there it was and it was there all day pretty much skimming the end of the arm and it was still there when I left :uhuh:. Lean time of year, easterly wind, the dredger mindlessly toiling just off the end of the west arm - the scene was set for the kind of fishing day usually enjoyed by Kalahari bushmen sitting on sand dunes kite flying a set of muppets. We weren't disappointed :uhuh:
Lug, mackerel, peeler crab, slipper limpet, king rag, every conceivable rig combination and at least 50 rods fished at every position and distance failed winkle out more than three or four rockling a dragonet and Tony's surprised postage stamp flattie. Tough times.
However still enjoyed the sunshine despite the cold and even fishing as grim as a russian war memorial couldn't over dampen our spirits ..............hic. Great to see our youngest member having his first proper lesson and doing so well too.

Evening all, i know this is off topic but ive just came back from the hospital and have been given 100% all clear. Back to work to try and rescue my business and finances. Huzzah! A huge thanks to all the surgeons, doctors, practice and district nurses who looked after me over the last four months. Your worth your weight in gold.:clap2:

Also a very well deserved two finger salute to the cretins at the benefits office who left me pennyless during my illness. The same salute goes to the taxman, Barclays bank and Woolwich mortgage company who were all collectively the most unhelpfull, rude and uncaring people / organisations I have ever had the misfortune to have to go begging to.

Now thats off my chest, im going to celebrate.

Spoke to a bloke last night (or rather he spoke to me) and he said that there was a local bylaw preventing fishing on the arm!

The whole conversation came about when he spotted a small pile of rubbish, he said that he'd seen all the write ups in the local papers about the SAS and how the arm was ment to be so clean. He reckoned this pile was where the arm was swept down and just left, what a load of rubbish! when I suggested that the council should put bins on the arm he didn't think this was a good idea for some reason as the arm was owned by the port authourity?

He then went on to give me a lesson on Shoreham harbour, (did you know that it is the only port in the uk to always make a profit!:nerd: ) and went on to say that fishing on the arm was actually banned due to an old bylaw from back in the day when ships used to tie up to it!

Does anyone know if there is any truth in this or was this bloke just talking out of his ring piece?

How about puting the" Thrupenny bit back on the map???" . It is on the lower arm section that comes out from the life boat station on Kingston Beach!...Some years ago my brothers and I used to pull up a few good sole e.t.c. . I am not sure how it fishes now...However I do remember that you have to watch the tide as it will cut you off big time!!!...Me and Daz" dagling daz" at some point are going to fish this again so we will let you know how it goes, also we used to dig rag there in the so called bucket load in half an hour!. Well it would be great to get this place fishing again.

Just a thought! Hasn't anyone thought to put up laminated signs saying, " Please take your rubbish with you" with the smaller print saying " protect the envrioment and keep the arm tidy" I know some would obviously ignore this but if it helps 10% thats an incentive for the rest! If someone leaves their rubbish, the next man may think it's ok for him to do the same, so on so on. Vice versa effect inevitably too!

Tony Day and I had it explained to us with the appropriate survey maps to illustrate the necessity. I am just waiting on confirmation of a couple of points before I send out a newsletter to all members about this and other matters.
I have to say the Harbour Master and Marine Operations Manager were very helpfull during the meeting last thursday and we will be receiving information from them on a regular basis regarding weekend operations. I hope once we have briefed out all the details then everyone will understand the "whys and wherefores" and we can move forward in what looks like being a very profitable partnership with the port authority.
Just for the diary though, I can tell you that the main dredger (the large suction one) will be operating in the harbour from High tide this coming Wednesday until late Friday so be warned should anyone have planned to fish these days:)

have just read the said email, well done to those involved, sounds like, for once, a small group of people (well, ok not so small a group now) really could make a difference, what a shame the newhaven anglers couldnt perhaps do something similar, and get the east arm re-opened to anglers.

well done again.

Hi Sean, Just back from the west arm and pleased to report fishing was quite good. Several sizable flounders caught on slipper limpet , rag and lugworm baits. Also a few dabs and the ubiquitous rockling. High drama down the arm today as we all witnessed the yacht fire offshore. Life boat was launched and came back with the crew of six. God! what a blaze watched it drift along and it finally sank about 4pm. I was kicking myself for not having my camera or phone - was going to give you a ring and see if you could have got a few good shots.

Yes he did! lol - I set him up with a flowing flattie trace and he caught first cast ( sorry if this is rubbing Seans nose in it lol). I reckon it will fish well tonight if this afternoon's session is anything to go by.
Loks like a beautiful night for fishing too, so good luck when you get down there.

well lads, i just got back from fishing.

the flounders were out in force tonight. thanks miesto for the rig and reel help!!lol

yes that boat, i got to shoreham at 2.30 and the boat had just caught on fire. it wasnt a yacht it was way bigger. there were some huge flames!! massive, even the lifeboats didnt get close at first. then when the flames really got going the crew, lowered there own lifeboat in to the water, they all got of the boat. only for there lifeboad to catch on fire!!! so the RNLI boat rescued them. at about 4pm the boat blow up, (not like in hollywood, just big big flames) then sank.

half of sussex was down the arm looking for ages, "oh this that is??" me: "no thats a bouy" "so where is it??" "It sank.... lol"

very funny :D

Quite a cold still murky day down the arm today with a few more fish caught than I expected. It was good to finally meet he likes of Mesito, Bungy, Tomfoolery and Jamie D.

Fished on the outside with a 2 hook rig baited with Rag, Black lug and Squid. Started off quite near the beach but with only a few little enquries after a couple of hours, I was sure I was heading for my first blank of the year. As a few flounders were being caught further up, mostly by Steve (Mesito) I decided a move was needed. A couple of casts later a plump little flounder was the result. I would like to of stayed longer but had to go, which was a shame as the fishing seemed to pick up as the tide dropped. I came away pleased with the fact that I'd caught my 100th fish this year.:yeah:

Thanks to Bungy for his left overs, how did you get on Jamie?
