yes you can peter thain is very good with fixed spool reels
the main thing is to make sure the spool does not turn under the pressure of casting

...Too true you can! Screw the spool tight down, weight about level with the reel and make sure the bale arm is not going to flip over.
Give it a whack!

Of course you can, just take things slow and steady, Thro' action rods work best with a FS reel

Hi Black Beard,
Is the rod your casting with in the picture rung for a mulitiplier as it seems to have more rings on than most f/spool rods of late or do you cast some multi rods with a fixed spool reel and find they work ok. Can you recommend an off the shelf multiplier beachcaster that will cast pretty good with a fixed spool as I have found that some fixed spool rods seem to have a much tamer blank than their equivalent multi versions. :g:
Thanks :)
Doesn't the line go into your fingers when using this method with a FS reel? That happens to me all the time, and that is just normal casting!

If you look at Neils finger you will see he is wearing a leather finger stool, about 1.99 from the chemist. Or you can use a Breakaway cannon.

i havent used my fixed pool for a good while now, not since buying another multi set up, but i used to cast just about as far with the fs as the multi, the fs was a softer rod too, you will have to use a breakaway canon though (as others have said), and make sure you tighten the spool down,
be 100% sure that the cannon has the line (shock leader) properly, a slip off the cannon at full compression can cause some embarrasment, and a few questionable glances from chris zzr as 6oz of end tackle buries itself in the beach behind his feet !

Hi mate,
When power casting with Fixed spool use some protection on your fingers. There are lots of things which guys use. I simply use a Marigold glove. It works a treat. I used to cut the fingers off the glove and use them but now don`t bother. Also, when you cast get into the habit of using two fingers to hold the line. You will be surprised how much easier it is on the fingers.
All the best,
Rich
