Sole?

Here's a question for all you west country people.
I occasionally read accounts of shore caught sole from down your way - usually from rock marks it seems. I don't want to know the marks - I need to know what sort of marks they're found at. As much detail as possible would be good. Here in SW Wales we've got similar territory to Devon but I've only ever heard of one person who claims to have caught sole. I want to find them if they're out there.
Any tips would be appreciated.

(PS Before anyone suggests it, no I'm not prepared to travel all the way to Gwent to fish. They've got good marks but I can't afford the fuel).

hi fishingrhod,
there should be plenty of sole around redwick.
on the english side most of the upper channel marks produce.if you fish a rocky venue you need to find the clean sandy areas as these hold the sole.

yes, i agree with dicky ive caught quite a few at redwick low water king rag best they have got smaller mouths than a flounder but they are very greedy and go for big baits but use size1 hooks try it.

No doubt about it Redwick got more sole potential than Whitney Houston! If Mick Brown & Matt Hayes can catch them then so can my missus! :D As you said small hooks cos they got small weird shaped mouths, best time to catch them is nightime (but with the colour of the water at Redwick they probably cant tell the difference) :lol: If you want somewhere clean & conventional to fish for sole try Barton-on-Sea at night (cant remember whether it Dorset or Hampshire) but I have fished there with a mate who is local & we have had them in numbers but ALWAYS at night, on harbour rag (mudworm) ;)

if you are willing to travel to Chesil beach in dorset you will stand a good chance of catching alot of sole, but only at the west bexington end of the beach.

Sole feed at night, they lay up during the day. Fish a long trace, three feet, small hook, don't cast more than thirty yards or you will cast over them. sole work the sandy stip at the bottom of shingle beaches. The long trace gives them more time to take the bait, without feeling any resistance. Low tide is also good in many places.

I have found Farm Fields a good mark for sole. Caught plenty in daylight - probably because the cahnnel is so muddy they feed all day. Use 3 hook clip down rigs with size 2 or 4 hooks with a 1" section of king rag up the shank of the hook - use a stop knot to stop the bait sliding up the snood.
