Hello everyone, this is my first thread.
At the end of this month I shall be having my right knee replaced and was wondering how this will affect my casting when I am able to resume fishing again.

I am a right handed caster using OTG BY choice but if this is not practical then I use a pendulum on the lines of John Holden's video.

I damaged my knee 28 years ago in an argument with a half ton beef cow back in my farming days and obviously I lost, as you would expect. Still it's done well to get this far with the thing I suppose. I am thinking that my rock hopping days may be over and confine my fishing to beaches.

Steve, many thanks for your reply and kind offer re the op. Blooming thing just keeps giving in and locking up for hours on end, almost on a daily basis. The pain of it! They tell me my left one is catching up as well, so like yourself I may have both done. Kind regards.

I work for the NHS and used to manage prosthetics and the like.

There is no reason why, after resting for as long as you are told to, and you do your recovery exercises that your knee should not be stronger and better than ever.

Good luck!

I think the resting bit might be a bit difficult to handle as I do not rest for long usually. Also doing lots of leg exercises in readiness.

You won't have time to rest afterwards. That's when you need to exercise most.Don't think of resting think about recovery.Do as your told in hospital take pain killers when offered even if you think you don't need them. Most important keep your exercises up.The time goes very quickly you will so see.

Point taken about pain killers as I have a high pain threshold or so they tell me. So will have to do as i'm told then. I see you are located in Somerset, did you have your knees done at shepton mallet, as that's where i'm of to, due to the very long wait in Devon.

euan m
Sounds like you have been through the mill a bit. Stay positive.

No mate had mine done at Musgrove Taunton, but my son has had an op at Shepton Mallet, excellent hospital.Plus you should be out and home in 5 days.Instead of 7-8 days with normal N.H.S.Good luck let us know how you get on.Steve.

Indeed I had a Uni or half new right knee on Jan second, Yes, it hurts like hell for a while, but I have gone from two crutches to one stick in two weeks.

Must do's:-

Take the pain pills when offered, even if you think you don't need them.

Do the exercises everyday and within two weeks three times a day but always listen to the physio.

Exercise and bending are vital, had a bad day a while back and did nothing, could hardly move the next day. Flexibility seems to be in direct proportion to exercise done.

Biggest problem is getting rid of the fluid around the knee and the bruising that will come out around your feet in a week/10 days.

Take it easy, listen to the doc and do what they say!

Good luck - Neil

Hi Black Beard
Many thanks for your kind advice. With the operation just a over week away, memories of how I damaged my right knee 28 years ago are coming back and the inconvenience it caused. Was on crutches for nine weeks and the bruising was from my ankle up to my groin. Still, looking forward to getting it fixed.

Squidchucker dont worry they will have you up and sitting in your chair next to your bed the day after your op.I had very little pain cos as soon as it started I told the staff. This they sorted and I had no more pain to talk of.Don't be a hero if you are in pain tell them.I was walking with two sticks the day after that and able to shower. In three weeks you wont know your self.Within seven weeks I stopped using a (one)stick unless I was going for a long walk,ie a mile.It just gets better and better.Eight months now since my last op.Had no problems for the last six months to talk of.One thing they will tell you don't over do it but this you won't know untill you have.Take note when this happens don't push your self so much we've all do it.Once more good luck my friend.Steve.

Thanks for the info. Look like progress is quite rapid. As I said before looking forward to it now and expanding my life a bit when all settles down. Also starting to think where I can start fishing again once I'm ok - probably Budleigh Salterton after a good blow.
