View Full Version : cooking (and prepareing) cod

this may be the most stupid question in this forum but ive never actually cooked anything ive caught (i dont eat fish!).
ive got a cod in the freezer that is gutted and head taken off... what do i do next??
fillets or steaks?
oil or butter?
fried or grilled?
all help most appreciated!!

fillets and cover with batter, and deep fat fry it, jsut like the chippy, mmm nice

homemade chips n peas aswell, bit o brown sauce

fillet it, but dont just cut it off the back bone. do you know how to de-bone at the same time as filleting. much less hassle, and nicer when eating fish.

have never filleted or cooked a fish... ever! thats my problem, should i fillet it frozen or let it thaw out? i need step by step, in depth, detail!! (please)

ok what ever you do, dont try and fillet it when its frozen!!

I will post how to fillet and de-bone later, i havent got time now

A decent cooking book will show you how and practice makes perfect.

a nice one to try is suff the cod with lemongrass and tarigon wrap it in tin foil
put in oven and cook 20 mis ish

served with a sweet chilly salsa and westwood mash yum yum

west wood is a smoked cheese just make butter mash then add cheese to taste

and seson sp mabe a bit of rocket sald as dressing making a dizzle of vingerett on the rocket salad ,

i will poast more ideaers if pepole would like it

and remeber the rules are if you dont try it you dont know so dont just sick to the norm wedge of lemon and in batter experement

can anyone please explain how to at least fillet it? its frozen at the moment.

cut down behind the pectoral when the fish is on its side and slice along the spine down to the wrist of the tail both sides.

or better,

1 .cut the head off.
2. cut the belly right down to the tail. the knive point should run along the back bone.
3. cut the top of the fish from the tail right up, again knive point on the back bone.
4. the fish should now open up
5. put the point of the knive under the rib bone and run it along. the bone should stay attacted to the back bone.
6. now cut the fillet off.
7. you should if done right have a boneless fillet.

i do this to whiting and bass, i havent filleted a cod but im sure it would be the same.

Fish pie is nice and easy to cook. Need leeks, potatoes, milk and butter. There are loads of recipes. Just type in fish pie recipe on google.
