Definitely OTG...or a quicker style to reach 150+ the Uni Tech cast.

a Uni Tech (or "Brighton" or "Hi Inertia" cast) will still help a complete beginner to get good distance quickly (more quickly and easily than O.T.G.) ,
provided he has a good grip on the spool and the rod is not very soft-tipped
and the reel has good cast controls (like the mag reels)
but we're assuming he means 'for a beginner to get distance with minimum trouble'
maybe he really means 'for a beginner to get 50 yards with a very, very soft bait' or something like that ?
and if he has a long, floppy rod then an overhead thump will do well..... not likely type of rod for Tyne & Wear, though

not sure what rod he has he won it with the reel
rod is a shakspear of some sort reel is r.t.
lets try to get him 20 or 30 yards to start with
also he will be going out with medlar and a few others soon

when advising on uni tech it would be advisable to mention any hazards involved
keegy,s idea is the best way to teach a newbie, if taught right, it will put his arms ect ln the correct position to progress to pendilum casting later, that is of course if he wants to
I didn't realize the lad was a complete beginner, i thought perhaps he had been using a Fixed spool and had just changed over to a multiplier.
As a beginner, i would suggest lessons would be the best starting point.

A Unitec cast on the wrong rod or done poorly could leave the rod in more pieces than it started ;)
Far better off putting in the time and learn to OTG properly
definately otg. overhead thump is a snatchy cast this will cause the reel to overrun.
also there is a lot of wasted energy in an overhead thump. otg isnt that hard to perfect.
get some lessons.

perhaps the original question should have been more exactly phrased
"best cast" for what ?
for being able to reach 150yd with bait, smooothly, in a year's time ?
for use with a really soft, through-action, 15ft long Shakey rod ?
for use with a pokey 18ft Shakey rod ?
to produce a cast of more than 80 yd WHICH DOESN'T WRECK BAIT within 1 hour ?
-----------------------"----------------110yd ------------"---------------within 2 hours
for someone who is already a skilled long-range Carp angler ?
for someone who makes the ravelling tangler look well-coordinated ?
for someone who will never have time or patience for lessons ?
for someone who is definitely going to get lessons in the Summer....but wants to get fishing right now ?
for someone fishing into kelp gullies at 55 yards where accuracy matters a lot and heavy tackle is being used ?
O.T.G. can handle all except the 7th and 10th of those.... can't it ?

Something going on here? :secret:
Something going on here? :secret:
medlar and some others are taking him out soon they will be able to teach him more in one day than he would learn in a year fishing on his own
:clap3: :clap3: :clap3: good on ya lads
