OK time has come around again for the annual WSF boat meet for Scotland. I hope this years trip goes down as well as last years did. Although if more beer gets consumed that last time.....I'll be worried....:). You can read the report by Shaun Cumming in the Features tab at the top of the screen.

The dates booked are Thurs 26th & Friday 27th of July.

So the cost based on 16 members going will be £90 for your 2 days fishing.

Now some of you I'm sure will be close enough to travel and thats great, for those of us having to travel book accommodation in Drummore of the surrounding area. I'll be staying at Clashwhannon Caravan Park which is very reasonable (http://www.clashwhannon.co.uk/). I can find more places for those that would like digs if you pm me.

What will we be doing...

Well we have 2 days so we could go for the tope one day and species the next. The weather might dictate where we go, but we can decide when we are there.

The boats hold 4 anglers so if you all decided to do something else that great, as long as we all have a good time.

Whats up for grabs......

Ian has kindly put and On Yer Marks Pollock rod into the prize pot. Worth £110 it's a generous donation. :clap2:
Mike Thrussell Jr & Sr will be giving us a mystery prize. :secret:
And of course what you all want the WSF cup...:clap2: :clap3: ....being naked for the presentation is not necessary.

Ian has guide lines for the tackle required and various other details available from his site http://www.onyermarks.co.uk/.

The boats also don't have space for big tackle boxes so might be best to get a smaller one...I'll have to.

One thing I feel I must make clear to those who have never fished with Ian is his conservation policy. Obviously all tope are returned, but so are all inshore Pollock. If folk wish to catch a fish or two for the table we can head for the off shore marks.

You'll need wellies for getting off the boats and bring some shrimp rigs, macky feather etc for feathering Launce and macky.

I've probably missed something but feel free to ask.

Deposits will be reqd I'm afraid. Half of the cost £45, does that seem fair. Now you can either post the cheque to me but make it out to Ian Burrett. Either way they will not be cashed unless you fail to turn up. Pm me for details. A deposit secures your place.

List of those going... I counted the names from the last thread and there are too many, so first come first served basis guys...the deposit gets you secured.

Hi Urlybird

The caravan site takes a limited number of tourers. I would book early. Tel. 01776 840632

The rock marks for Pollack Conger and wrasse provide the best fishing around here and the evenings can provide some good bass fishing. The beach marks will produce dogs, flatties, whiting, gurnard and small codling.

Bring an OS map and i will put some marks on it

B*ll*cks! I'm going to miss this! I'm away to the Isle of Harris fishing for three weeks in July and get home on the 28th. I had been really looking forward to it since the last thread, pretty bummed that I'll miss it. Oh well, hope you have a good few days, from past experience...it's awesome! :fish:

Ubd

Hi Urly

Most folk bring a light spinning rod/carp rod for the Pollack which also doubles for the snitching rod in a species hunt and a 12-20 lb class for the tope and general fishing.

The uptiders designed to chuck 5-9 oz are generally to heavy as they equate to 30lb class.

For more info on tackle have a look at

ok just ok you will come away wanting to marry the thing i got a hold of the whole range at the fladen trade show last month and put it this way you wont need another boat rod to go for conger ,tope or anything theyre lite theyre strong ni on unbreakable to quote fladens top man.

Hi Urly, I think yer bass rod will do you fine mate...the biggest Pollock I got last year off Ians boat was 7.1/2lbs...on an 8 foot, Milbro Ghillie Rod.....it handled it just fine.....:)

Didnt know you've never fished up here before......that will soon change for the better....and when was this angler fishing in Helensburgh.??? may I ask ???? Thats where I started sea angling....wayyyyyyy back in the 70's....:)

I must admit to really getting quite excited about this trip...The Mull is a gorgeous place......and , I have a couple or three trips arranged down there this year....:) at least 2 with Ian B....:)I know for a fact, that after this trip, you WILL return to the Mull....:)

Mate, I looked at it and thought "hmmmm" thats one hell of a rod to use on a boat, she'd need to be about 60 feet long for this to work, but bought it anyway cos it was £40 cheaper than the B**s rod I was looking at, but with the same kind of action, and the whipping "was" lovely :)

HI
I am still looking to book up a place for the wed 25th and thurs 26th, but i would like to make it a week long trip, and would appreciate some help in any caravan places as i would like to bring my family along, i realise i might be too late for the week long / 5 day trip. But any help would be greatfully recieved. If any one knows of a caravan that would hold 4 for the week from say tuesday 24th through to the Sat 28th would be great or any where i can call would also be a great help.

30lb braid is fine, Get a 300m spool and back it up with 30lb mono. Normally my leader is 30lb also but when fishing for Tope i up it to 80lb, That has worked for me although i know a few guys up it to 100lb+ as there rubbing leader. Make of braid??? Everyone will have there own opinion i use Power-Pro and Daiwa Tournament Green and Accu Depth, They work well for me :)

i usually just pick it up from glasgow angling centre 120lb BS coated wire hook is a 6 o patridge sea master you only need 12 in of wire 200lb swivel make sure you put the wire through the crimp and back into the crimp twice , you dont want to loose the fish of a lifetime through a crimp slipping generally i use a trace of about 6ft of 150lb BS mono , but have used traces to 12ft before the tope can roll up the trace sometimes gets into a right mess !!:g:

Well lads the time for action is drawing ever closer, personally I am really excited about this trip and now can't wait to meet you guys and hopefully catch a tope or two, weather permitting.:clap2:

I have had a look on Ian's very helpful site but still have one or two questions.

Firstly, Ian recommends using braid for your mainline. Is this a must? as I would prefer to use 20lb mono.

Secondly, I believe that I only need a small selection of weights for tope fishing and as I don't wish to sink the boat, can you advise? I was thinking along the lines of 12, six to eight ounce plain leads, (any gripleads needed ?).

Most importantly though I need to know the time and place the boats will be departing from as I may be arriving only an hour before. :g:

Sorry if any of this has already been covered in the previous 17 pages of posts lol:)

The launch site depends on the weather and tides I think JV, I will let everyone know before we go and and finalise all details.

As to the leads we will be downtiding for the tope so no grippers just standard leads. Upto a 1lb i think might be needed in some spots, hopefully some of Ian's regulars will be able to advise properly on the lead situation.

I was going to take 10oz, 12oz and 1 1/4 plus a few drilled bullets for the float fishing.

the tides are small on the 26th an 27th so you,ll not need anything more than 8oz max , if you need to put any more lead than that on, then your either useing mono which is really really not recomended, infact does anybody still use mono from boats ?? or there is too much tide in which case the tope will be hiding out of the tidal flow but i think the later will not be the case ...most important thing to do is bring some settled weather with you everything else will take care of itself after that !!! but remember leave some for me an my crew the week after all you !!!:clap2::clap2:

Adeys - cheers for the tide info.

Peter - not to sure if the tides are good for Ardwell ?? - only fished it over LW.

Guys - can I just mention that it is better to take the minimal amount of gear on the boats - try and decant it to a small bag, rather than take a seat box. Deckspace is pretty tight.

As kenny say's, Just bring a spinning rod for Pollack and a 12lb class boat outfit for Tope/Species. Tackle wise just a sm rucksack full will suffice, You won't get a seatbox on.

Just wondering on rigs.

For example - is it ok to feather for mackerel/launce with more than three hooks.

( It's taken for granted conservation/safety is paramount. )

Hi

It depends on where the tope packs are as to where we end up fishing.

At the worst scenario a pound will be needed with a 30lb braid. With Nylon probably 1.5 pounds. Braid id definatly the preferred option

We have plenty of rods and reels provided by our sponsors Penn. The reels are lever drag and loaded with braid. If anyone requires one please PM me.

I will not be deciding on the launch site umtil the evening before you sail. This is based on where is fishing well and the direction of the wind.

Anyone travelling the same day or the night before can ring me. Tel no. on the website. Please phone my home number as the mobile doesn't work at my house.

All launches are within a 10 minutes drive of Drummore

Any other questions please feel free to pm me

Terally bay seems to be popular and looks quite safe.

Also East Tarbet

If you drive down the mull towards the lighthouse there is a small jetty on the lefthand side ( you can see it from the car ) - which looks safe to float fish or spin from.

peterthefisherman
18-07-2007, 18:58

Well spotted Peter - it was meant to be two seperate marks. :notworthy

Terally for a bit of beach life/fishing and Tarbert just for fishing.

Adeys , some of the better marks are like the north face of Everest unless you are Sherpa Tensing or have the attributes of a mountain goat be careful fishing alone :)
