i need a good casting technique for a newbie which will get a good 20 - 40 yrds with minimal effort, well at least as little effort as possible

Off The Ground or OTG (but the forum wouldn't let me post it as it was too short)

What set up are you using matey ?
rod, reel, line, rigs, shockleader and species targeting.
40lb line straight through isnt going to cast so well, but on many occasions the fish are closer than you expect as a little 8 year old girl found out when she bagged a 6lb bass under her dads feet on a hand line ! LOL

well um i use a fixed spool normally a fire bird godfather shockleader sometimes and pennel rig or pully rig depending on what my mate lets me use. soon i will be buyin a rod though so it might change in a few weeks maybe a few days even.

if you really mean 20-40 yards, any technique at all will do it.
If you'll be looking to increase (a lot) at a later date, then OTG - provided you can lay your baited trace (well, at least the lead) down is a good starting point.

okay
thanks for all your replies! i've learnt more than i could of thought. OTG and anything will do to get 20 - 40 yrds :o thanks again people
just remember Dan, let the rod do the work..... you just have to make it bend to propel your rig & release at the right time.... even with a little practice you will improve.... another thing, imagine you are trying to punch the sky way above the horizon with your hand thats gripping the reel... my mate woody gained 50 yards with that thought in mind... good luck mate...Chris

Thanks Chris
As WRC just said..
Timing plays a big factor and so does the speed your trying to pull the rod over your head..
Dont be fooled in to thinking the faster you pull the rod from behind you to infront of you will help as it just makes things worse, just try going slow and practise releasing the line with the tip at around a 45 degree angle or so.
you'll get there it just takes a bit of practise.

Best thing to do would be to try and arrange a session with a proper casting instructor,or see if a local club can help you out-you will learn a whole lot faster being shown what to do rather than trying to figure it out yourself mate.

the uni cast is an easy cast to learn as well a bit easyer than otg cast but its all about what you are happy with i have started of with the uni cast then otg now can do full pendulum all with in a year so practice makes perfect tight lines mate hope you do ok

like mike n said the faster you pull the rod the more chance of a birdie like i found out thought that if you try and pull fast it would go futher not the case load the rod nice and steady then hit it nice and smooth when i first started i was only getting about 100yds max with a over head thump then tried the uni cast hit 140yds with otg even better then when i mastered the pendulum i was hitting 240 with a 6oz plain lead tight lines
