To all

I have never seen someone cast more than 50 odd yards. Still, they are all fishing. Must be my marks - still, 100, 200 yards - never seen it.

Do you need to cast that far - if so, how?

you need to cast where the fish are for best results, if they are 10yds out, then thats where you need to be, if 150yds then the same applies, if you want to cast further then instruction is the way to go, start with OTG and move on to pendulum etc, you'll get plenty of advice on here, some good and some not so good. Hope that helps.

I've fished up and down the holderness coast and I've never seen anybody casting this 150 yards+ (with bait still in one piece).

I've seen a few lads banging it out 120-130 yards and they are very competent casters. But I honestly believe that so many over exagerate as to how far they can cast with a decent cod bait.

We were catching cod at 30 yards last year and a longer cast simply produced small whiting. As they say, cast to where the fish are.

Ive only ever seen a group of huge casters once and trust me they throw leads to the horizon (tackled up). They just dont fish where you fish :)

I still maintain that 150 yards with a bait 'in tact' is a bloody long way and many of the lads who throw 200+ over grass still only throw 130 yards with a decent sized bait 'in tact'.

Ive seen blokes cast a single worm clipped down rig up to 220yds at a tournament up at redcar a few years ago, also the secret of getting a bait intact out to those type of distances is to freeze it on the hook with plumbers spray , I use this if I am trying to blast a soft bait out a long way .give it a try you will be amazed at the results you will get all of the bait to the sea bed instead of watching a trail of juice and bits leave the hook when you blast one out .

and ive seen allen forder put a 175 well over 280 and seen the best aswell dav vicary

270 is very long way regardless of style

I've fished with colin (the Freek) francis and he does make the backcast look easy.
Hope he bounces back from his shoulder op this year!:notworthy

Jim C:secret:

backcasting was the first moving lead cast I was taught but I couldn't hold the spool of a multiplier tight enough and stuck with fixed spool.:g:

What is " plumbers spray "?

you buy it from builder merchants and some diy stores, it's a very cold spray which freezes copper pipes, allowing the plumber to do work where he might not be able to turn off a stop cock,

on bait, it simply freezes it !

as for casting long ways, we mainly use pretty tough blacks and yellow tails, i've had them come back in from a 100yrd + cast in perfect condition ! i think it more to do with the fact, that at distance.... due to a long arc of line, wind, drag etc, that the bait will hit the water at a much slower speed than you think, as a comparrison, i've had a cocked up pendulum (knocked the reel out of free spool) which sent the bait about 20 yards, ripping tapered leader off the low set drag, pretty much full speed into the water infront of me, not a peice of worm left !!

i agree about a big cod or smoothhound bait though, distance is dramatically reduced, i make big squid or crab baits for the above, casting them on a clipped running ledger, i reckon i lose about 40yrds over a 3hk clipped rig, mainly because i'm casting an xtra couple of oz of bait at least !

if you catch fish, then it's fine ! you don't always need the distances that can be acheived with 'pendulum' or 'off the ground' casts, they can help when the fish are at distance, or you need to punch a big bait and lead thru the wind.
