May I recommend Assan and Tom as your beach fishing guides. Two super lads with a 4x4. A few posters on here have used them with success. Their best fish of 2006 were a 50 kilo and 60 kilo guitarfish and they know the beaches better than anybody. Check previous posts and photos.
You can contact them at Tom and Assan, Tel: +2207781160. They are delighted to receive guests from this website. Just mention my name, Tony.

Tony,
Is Assan the same chap that used to skipper One of Mark Longsters boats?

No, I know who you mean though as I had Assan as a Skipper last february. I was introduced to Tom and Assan through Mark longster for beach fishing, I believe they are freelance.

Hi Glen
Have you had a chance to read these two particular threads - http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23786 and http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17510 - that identify how to add images to posts - either embedded in the post itself or stored separately on the 'photobucket' site?

Seeing this thread does anyone know what has happened to Assan, Marks skipper as I will be going again in the late Autumn and still belive he is the best.

I have always caught good fish when he has been my skipper

When I used Marks boat 2 weeks ago his skipper was Michael and he was OK but didn't want to try several methods when not catching.
Will be back in November and introducing him to some new methods.
Use the other people in the center and ask for Ali , he is brought in with his ORKNEY when they are busy , he,s good.

Hassan (Ninja), Omar, and Bala (Moses) are still working on Mark's old business (boats Tarpon 1,2 and 3).

The business runs out of Denton Bridge (old side) but is now owned by Steve.

I spent time with them in December - they are as good as ever. :) :)

Avoid going out with Steve though as his knowledge is not what it needs to be. One of the skippers was ill on one of the days we had booked and Steve skippered - waste of time and I would even venture to say that I would not feel safe with him out on the reefs.

Having said all that after 4 weeks total fishing in Gambia I would spend more time beach fishing and less time reef fishing when I next

I am really please to hear Nija is still there:clap2: :clap2:

I have been out with him many times and always caught well. It is not because of me but he ace fish finding skills.

Who is Steve, I have not heard his name before?

Also what has happened to Mark Longster? I am suprised he has stopped /given up / moved. Which is it?

Mark Longster sold his buisness to Steve. He now has one boat he hires out to stop him being bored. Its doing Mark some good , I thought I was chilled but next to Mark I seem manic!
Don,t know "Steve" and I havent fished with him.

I didnt know Steve had bought Mark Longster out until I arrived in Gambia in December. He was a nice enough guy but as I said he's not a fisherman and he needs to accept that. As usual always barter for the best prices.

There's another excellent recommendation for the shore fishing guides - Tom and Assan - on this thread - http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56641 - posted by crocodileteeth.

On our recent trip to Gambia a Driver/Taxi was recommended to us:

Buba Bah Tel: 0022 0 7716470 or 0022 0 9909556

I cannot say enough about this guy. It was a pleasure to be in his company, friendly knowledgeable and reliable. As an older guy he is great to show the complete Gambia. As I say, not a fishing guide but a taxi/driver for that day off or travelling around at night.

Jim.

Just another recommendation for a shore guide I picked up from this thread - http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105019&page=2, post 12. Relates to late February/early March 2008.

Hi guys,
my first posting here. I am Theo from Holland. I haven been fishing in The Gambia end of februari and start of march. It was great. We went one day beachfishing with Tom and Assan. Graet guys. Hard workers and they will try everything to make your day a succes. Fishing was low, but what is the problem with sitting on a beautifull beach, sun on your head, in shorts and a t-shirt. And now and than a fish. And species that I never caught before. The only problem was that my reel broke on my first fish. It was a real big one according to Tom and Assan. The beast took 50 meter sin an instant. When I gave a little more pressure, the line snapped. I couldn't understand why, untill I examined my reel (Okuma Epix). The line dind't go over the lineroller but beside it. And that stuff was not steel but some kind of plastic. The speed with which the fish took the line made it eat into the plastic and murdered my reel. I am sorry for my bad English, but I hope I made my point. Pity I couldn't land or even see the fish. Tom and Assan suppoesed it was a big Captainfish.
We (with two other Dutch guys) took after all some nice stingrays, catfishes, captainfishes, a ladyfish, butterfishes. So it was nice fishing after all.
We were fisshing for three and a half day. We had to entertain the ladies too. One day with a Duitch guy (Ton, ask at the bar; €30 per person for three fishermen) at the Paradise Beach at Sanyang, one day creekfishing combined with a tour through the mangrovecreeks and on the day of our departure we went fishing with a local guy, trolling for cuda. Three and a half our trolling brought us just one cuda.
That's it for now guys. Tight lines.

I forgot: Thanks for all the tips here on this fantastic forum. November I am off to Cuba. I am allready reading that section as well.

I'm new here but have spent the last two Christmas holidays fishing the Gambia reefs and creeks. The creeks are definitely a place for the family to try to learn and enjoy the thrill of catching with virtually every cast. We spent a few days catching Butterfish, Red Snapper, Captainfish and Ladyfish. The kids fished until their arms ached and my wife sat in the sun and read books, occassionaly glancing up to admire the latest big landing.

The sea fishing was better for the big fish and I spent time reef fishing and trawling for Barracuda. I have to admit to not having natural sea legs and this made things a little more difficult fishing and trying to keep breakfast where it was. Still a good day out and plenty of action.

I can recommend Pa Jammeh and Abrahim who know the waters like the back of their hand and work very hard to make the day a very special experience. I know they have their own boats now too and Pa's contact number is 00220 7293785 or e-mail Bafodejammeh@yahoo.com. He'll organise the taxis to and from your hotel, lunch on board, plenty of drink, rods and reels (good stuff too, not the knackered gear I've seen at Denton Bridge) bait etc.

Really nice, genuine guys who work so hard to survive and have invested in their own boats too. When not in the boats, Pa is found fishing off the beach outside the Atlantic Hotel in Banjul, you can't miss him.

Pa got a good haul of Captainfish, Butterfish and Ladyfish during the week. Pity its coming to the end of the season out there now. Hotels are closing down this week for the rainy season.

A post from another thread that I thought I'd copy across for completeness:

call pepe on 002209914716

the best beach guide .

Get yourself down to batakunko rocks at the start of the incoming tide and be prepared to scramble across the rocks and get wet.

Poppers should be 12cm skitterpop sized or big walk the dogs . Large toby with changed trebles work well.

My best afternoon was 3 small tarpon { up to 40lb ] and 3 or 4 jacks and a snapper , but you must be prepared to get grazed knees.

Its the best spot for popper fishing
