dont mean to sounds completely stupid (although i already hav :P) but what kind of bait? mackrel? and what exactly are pirks and shads :g: lol
pirks are stainless steel tubes with the hooks attached,a pirk acts as a sinker and as an attractor, some have eye painted on etc, shads arerubber shapes, vaits just as you would from the shore, worm, macky, squid, mussell crab etc

Hello rassick
This is what i normally take on a trip.
1 rod and reel of course.( normally 30-50 class)
2 plenty weights(jiggers,Pirks)plain bombs 5oz
3 spare hooks line
4 rigs include some small daylights for makeral(bait)
5 knife for filleting ya fish on the way home
6 bag to put them in
7 plenty sandwiches pies pasties out that you can eat, and pop it's thirsty work on the boat and the sea air makes you dry.:boat: :boat:
8 towel
9 bog roll( just incase)
10 most inportant bring a set of thick gloves i.e gardening gloves. if you get stuck and the skipper is busy then you will need to pull ya line and trust me you dont want to do this without any gloves on.

12 i normally take a little squid.
13 suncream if hot.
hope this is some help
see you soon
fluffy (andy)

A question for those who have fished onboard the Maggie May.
Does the skipper mainly fish rough ground or does he go from wreck to wreck to find the fish? I know most boats do a bit of both but what's this skippers preference? Wreck or hard ground?
The reason that I ask is that I prefer to fish with lighter tackle over the rough ground like that found off Boulby, where most Hartlepool boats head for. I realise the weather on the day could be a deciding factor in where we fish though.
If we are mainly wreck fishing I will have to get the heavy gear out, or stick to using shads. J.V.:)

North Sea rough ground boat fishing.
This type of fishing is normally done with the boat drifting along in the tide and wind, the combination of tide and wind will be the factor regarding how fast the boat moves. The faster the boat is moving the heavier the lead weight you will need to stay on the bottom. When after cod you must have your bait/lures bumping along the seabed, this is where the fish are.
If you are fishing over rough ground then a 20lb to 30lb class boat rod is ideal, combined with an abu 7000 type reel. A lot depends on how windy it is on the day for your weight size but anything from 8 to 12 ounce should be ok. If there's no wind and hardly any tide it's sometimes possible to fish with 5 ounce sinkers but I would bring 8 ounce weights mainly with a few heavier in my box. I normally take around 20 weights.
As for line 35lb is a good choice. You can use hokkais or daylights baited with ragworm, mackeral or squid. Alternatively you can just drop a bait onto the seabed but you will lose a lot of tackle with this method.
North Sea wrecking.
There are loads of wrecks out there in the North sea and there are a couple of ways to fish them. The skipper always drifts over the wreck though and you need to listen closely to his advice, you may only get one 5 minute drop on the wreck at a time!
Heavier gear is recommended, 50lb class boat rods and large reels that hold a few hundred yards of 50lb line. Most anglers use pirks and squid immitation lures called muppets to catch the fish.
You can drop a mackeral bait down into the wreck for ling but both these methods normally result in high tackle losses.
Some anglers are now using shads on flying collar rigs which does reduce tackle losses and can pick out the better fish. This method can be performed with lighter gear like that you would use on the rough ground.
Finally the North Sea isn't mega deep and you will never be fishing in more than 90 foot of water.
I will put some pics up on this thread of the type of lures you may need soon. J.V.:)

Have Just Spoken To The Skipper And As We Are Out All Day We Will Be Fishing Both The Rock Marks And The Wrecks, Dave We Will Be Going To Boulby But That Depends On The Weather. So What Tackle Do You Suggest?
hibbdogg
25-03-2007, 20:24
A rod and reel would be a good start:roll1:
jarrow viking
25-03-2007, 20:31
As you can only sensibly take one rod on the boat per angler I would suggest getting some heavier wreck fishing gear that will be capable of hauling what could be large fish and 1lb pirks from the depths. You can also use this gear on the rough ground where there is normally a smaller stamp of fish. Fish of a couple of pounds are totally out gunned by this heavier gear and it's not very sporting but it's probably the best solution to the problem.:)
so average 10 ounce pirks ok for wrecks or to light
fluffy69
26-03-2007, 10:39
If using heavy gear. get some braid on ya reel.
it might be heavy gear but by christ you know when you have a fish!

The skipper (John) will fish mainly rough ground , but if nowt is biting he will move over a few wrecks.......and vice versa.
I always take extra jiggers, weights, muppets etc,so if you run out I`m sure I can sell you some.................lol.

As promised some pictures for you: My camera doesn't like close ups, so please excuse the picture quality.
Pirks, these are what most people use when wreck fishing, it's basically a lump of lead weighing around 12 ounces that imitates a small fish. You can buy these or make your own out of chrome tubing, filled with lead. Pirks are best used in clear water, jigged up and down over the wreck. Large treble hooks or single 8/0 hooks are used on the catching end. Some anglers bait the pirk with mackeral and this can be deadly for ling. The picture shows a pirk and an 8 ounce weight.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e199/v01/STA41883Small.jpg
.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ...........
Muppets, these are immitation squid in various colours, pink and orange seem to be the best but all colours work. Two of these above your pirk with strong 6/0 hooks are what most anglers use when wreck fishing, it's possible to add a bait to your muppet like ragworm or mackeral for added attraction. Used mainly when wreck fishing but they can work well over the rough ground to.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e199/v01/STA41860Small.jpg
.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..........
Cod daylights, look like small bait fish, I find that these work best over rough ground, jigged up and down with a bit of ragworm added to the hook. I normally don't use them with a pirk, simply add an 8 ounce weight to the end of your rig.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e199/v01/STA41856Small.jpg
.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ............
Hokkais, used in the same manner as cod daylights, over rough ground mainly but they also work well when wreck fishing either with a plain lead or with a pirk. You can also add bait like ragworm for added attraction.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e199/v01/STA41861Small.jpg
.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ...........
Shads, again a small fish immitation. A method that has worked well for many years in the English channel and on the West coast wrecks for cod and pollack. They are dropped down flying collar style on a boom and then reeled in, either quickly or slowly up from the wreck, hopefully taking a nice fish on the retrieve.
Shads are always hooked with the point coming out of the back, this gives the best action and hooking power to the lure. Shads don't seem to work at all over our local rough ground areas, probably due to the fish being a bit more scattered than the fish found on a wreck.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e199/v01/STA41858Small.jpg
.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ...........
Hopefully this helps those who are new to North sea boat fishing. J.V.:)
Nice pics man there a real help thanks alot.
How long are those shads???
jarrow viking
27-03-2007, 18:33
Hi Rassick, around six inches long I would say, they also have a bit of weight in the head. The shads mentioned by Bill previously sound very interesting though and will be well worth a look.

Any chance of some one doing a list of all tackle that should be in our boxes for the day? Also im a little confused on rods what do i need 12/20lb or 20/30lb? final question what line/braid is best (what lb also)? i would like to use braid if ok as i love the feel of contact you get from it. But im sure some of you guys no whats best. Cheers lads.
gregg braid will be fine. i use a 12lb class rod but i only use 12oz pirks and 10oz leadhead on the bottom of a hokki or muppet rig. I like to fish as light as i can to get the sport out of it.

Here`s a few item you may like to take...........
Boat rod ....20-30lb class ( use a lighter class rod if you want some sport)
reel with 50-60lb braid (if possible)
weights....12-16oz
pirks.......variouse
a good sharp knife
long nose pliers/forceps
muppets.....varoiuse colours
snap link swivels 50lb class
a good selection of hooks ...from size 2/0 up to size 8/0
a good selection of mono line.....from 25lb to 60lb (mainly for your leader to your braid) with a leader its easier to untangle and get knots out than braid.
lumi hokki head lures
a selection of daylite lures...size 2/0+
bait wise
take a few boxes of squid and a half dozen fresh mackerel
rag worm (opional)
lug worm (optional)
peelers (optional)
dont forget your sea sick tablets!
no doubt I have missed afew thing out , but dont wory , I probably got them in my box anyhow.

sea sickness is to do with the inner ear i.e for your balance if you're not fishing too far out don't look at the sea or the boat keep your eyes on something fixed...not moving the best thing to look at is the coastline ignore what the rest of your body is doing concentrate on land and carry on fishing i have no problems at all whilst fishing on a boat hope this helps you lads lewis

Why cancel, John will usually go out as long as theres 6 or more or is that just through the week. Would have thought he would still go with 8 Rods.

I use 60lb mono, about 5 turns on your reel should be enough.
To connect to braid I tie a knot in the mono,(but dont pull it tight yet) then tread braid through mono knot, and do 5 turns around mono , then form a loop in braid and do 5 turn inside loop, now wet with spit and pull tight, next cut off excess mono,I use this knot every time ......dont know what it1s called though.

Aye that’s what I use Brian for my leader knots of the shore too. Never had any problems with them and there brill on a cold winter night as they are so simple to tie. I just wasn’t sure if it would be suitable for joining braid to mono but obviously it is. Cheers

:) Plenty of drinking water and food

:) Bait should include- squid, makerel (worms and crab if you want)
:) Warm clothing and Sun Tan lotion
:) £25.00 boat fees
:) optional money for sweep
:) sinkers around 14oz depending on the rod (easy to double up with 2 x 6oz sinkers or whatever youve got)

Does the boat leave from the marina on the headland at Hartlepool or is it from somewhere else?
If you double up on sinkers, they have a tendancy to twist either with the tide or on the retrieve. You might get away with it if you have a decent swivel, however the single sinker is the better option.
I have only fished out of Hartlepool a couple of times and cant remember using anything bigger than 10oz when bottom fishing. We are also fishing neap tides, that being said it does'nt harm to take larger leads with you. And you have'nt got far to walk from your car to the boat.
Another suggestion when you are bottom fishing is to use a weak link between the sinker and your clip. So if you do get stuck fast you should only lose the weight and not your terminal gear.
Braid is by far the best line to use, and by choice I would choose berkly fireline. It has good abrasion resistance for use on rough ground, however can work out expensive. As for the breaking strain personally I would use it in the 30lb class because; the fish you are targetting will not be bigger than that and in case they are you have the clutch on the reel. Going for the break with 40/50lb braid may and can damage the reel and rod.
If you use monofiliment then you will need heavier weights to get to the bottom, because of the diameter of the line. That being said if you lose 40/50 yards of line it will not work out as expensive as braid.
Sorry if this sounds crap I am not trying to teach people to suck eggs, just trying to give the benefit of experiences I've had. Whenever we go out fishing, we always learn something new from other anglers.
The boat leaves from the main marina not the headland. The one were the lock gates are, you can park right next to the pick up point at that time in the morning.

Not Crap at all Jed, the benefit of someones experiences is invaluable. A few on the trip are new or fairly new to Boat fishing and any info.is a great benefit.
Hope the fishing is better than recent reports suggest. Water must be clearing a bit by now. See you Saturday.

As Bob says thats a great help Jed im new to boat fishing and that kind of info is invaluable. I have a quick question when beding braid with mono will 20/30 lb line be ok?
I personnaly don't bother with tying mono onto braid. I tie a genie link straight to the braid and clip on any terminal tackle I am using.
When your fishing rough ground or wrecks you do lose tackle, if your re-tying mono back onto braid you lose time fishing.
Whether your fishing xmas lights fashion or a flying collar rig using your rig like this enables you to change between the two quite fast. By xmas lights fashion I mean clip your hoki's onto your genie rig with a pirk on the bottom, or by the flying collar rig. I have a boom made up with a swivel on one end of the line (50lb) thread the boom on and then tie another genie link on the opposite end. I make it about 18" long depending on the size of the boom. I then make my hook length up depending on what you are targetting; (big fish big line big hook) with a swivel on one end and the hook on the other.
I can show anybody who wants me to on the boat or in the car park prior to loading. Happy to help.

The sea was quite bumpy to begin with out on the wrecks but by the time we moved further inshore it had settled.
Yet again the wsf blanking bug hit one of our meets again with just 5 fish being taken between 10 of us all day, 1 whiting 2 pouting and 2 codling, the biggest caught by pestguard (brian) about a couple of pounds.
apart from the lack of fish and the sea sickness i had a good day, again it was nice to meet other wsf members who have not attended meets in the past.
Im going to look into booking another boat soon, probably in june
is anyone interested? (there should be some fish by then!).:boat: :boat: :boat:

looks like fun lol iam out somtime end of may so hope some fish out there lol
Hi Carl, great to meet some of the guys off WSF. Pity the fish wernt having any, i have never had a day on the Boats when it was so poor. Having said that, it was still an enjoyable day and i for one am interested in another trip. Put me down as a definite. June onwards would give the water time to clear & the Mackie will be there by then and sport will be very much better. Going for a well earned shower now in the hope it will take the aches & pains away.
Cheers, Bob.

Hello people.
Yes it was a good day out, nice to meet people and to fish for the first time this year:clap3:
Just my luck no fish:schmoll:
well i did use a new rod, should of known:blink:
Nice to see Dave J.V and have a little chat, ive been looking at that Norway adventure already Dave:boat:
Well done to Pestguard for his fish, it was definately the pink hoki's that did it:notworthy
I will certainly go on another trip, and most certainly on that boat, very nice boat fast and spacious.
I thought that i was going to get cut out of that toilet though:blink:
I will just put lots of vasaline on the next time:)
Happy days

well done lads sounds like you had a good time pity there wasnt any bigguns caught
Next time youll not have youre floaty jacket on cos itll be nice & warm mate. Youll fit the bog a bit easier then. Might even get a few fish too.

Great to meet all of you, some for the first time and others I have already met, unfortunately that's all that was good about this trip out into the North Sea lol:)
I have to applaud John, the skipper for trying his best. We must have hit twenty wrecks, tried numerous pieces of rough ground and burned a lot of fuel but it wasn't to be :uhuh:
Tides too big for wrecking? Wrong time of year? I think so:blink:
Give it another month and there should be some better boat catches reported.
Andy, I will take you up on that Norway trip, looks like that's our only chance of some decent cod. J.V.:)

We went straight out East from Hartlepool, no more than ten miles I would say and then tried the wrecks to the North, towards Seaham.

Dont you just hate it when that happens! I've only fished out of h/pool once before and the last time was 15 years ago on Esk Star and guess what? I blanked then too. Fortunatly I was the only one who blanked on that trip tho'.
Fully agree with JV that the skipper did everything possible but on the day the fish wern't interested in what we had to offer. All good anglers know that this happens sometimes and you just have to smile and make the most of the day.
It was nice to meet you guys and I must say that I haven't fished from such a lovely well organised boat and will be going back.
Special thanks to Andy (Fluffy) for giving me a lift in my hour of need,
"HAPPY DAYS"
was a very poor day but will be up for another trip in a few weeks or so. And whats this about a Norway trip i would be up for that anyday... And was nice to meet some of the lads from the sight and put names to faces.
Cheers
