View Full Version : East/South East Meet 24 or 31 March.

I'm posting a new thread as the old East Coast meet thread is getting a bit cluttered.
I don't mind helping to organise another meet and I think it would be a good idea to include the South East forum so more of us Essex boys can come too.
I suggest Felixstowe. We could all meet in the Viewpoint Car Park ( where the burger van is!!) and disperse from there to Landguard or where ever.
Suggest either 24 March ( High Water 1430-ish ) or 31 March ( High Water 1130-ish BST, mind).
Steve/Cascars - can you sort out where to post thread and sticky etc.?

good advantage is car parking around that area as you can use nature reserve or park at languard to access sea side but the viewing area can get busy on a sat. if we have more than aldborough meet then it will be better fishing from the butts upwards to the old pier to enable us all to have a good bit of space parking in nature reserve would cover us all then , its only a little treck to the burger van and think of the exercise, the beach in this area is shingle and sand so wil tone ya calf muscles lol, either way there aint that many snags apart from in the groins area about 50 yards out, any one wants derections if this is the venue then i can help with this, perhaps we can persuade the burger van to locate on beach for us :g:

Yeah fair point. I was just suggesting we all meet in the Viewpoint car park for a chat first, then drive/walk to where ever people want to fish.
At Aldeburgh, there was no opportunity for everyone to get together and put faces to names. And that's not a criticism, it's just the way it happened.
Some of us more mature anglers aren't up to walking far, either!!

felixstowe town centre have disability buggies for ya old farts :wheelchai , being so early viewing area would be a possible or as i said the nature reserve car park accepts atleast 100 cars and youve got direct access to the butts and upto the pier with concrete walk way( subject to tides ), plus car park has a tap to wash ya bits in :g: better rephrase that your fishing gear and also toilets available , where ever we go lets all have a hand in plannin and it should take pressure off just one person arranging it, set a date between all of us and go from there we aint gonna be able to please everyone so majority set dates should be fair,, perhaps having one central person to have a mobile no as contact for the day may help so any late arrivals or problems there is a central point of contact

Good idea, Bangle'.
I was going to set the date which the majority of people could make.......otherwise, like you say, we'll be forever trying to please everybody. So I'll leave any decision for about another week to give members a chance to let us know when they're available and then fix the date
Given you know the area very well, are you prepared to be central point of contact on the day?

As some of you may know, there's a couple of matches on the Sunday, so I'll be treating this as a pure social.

I'll only be using 1 rod with bigger baits/hooks - which will hopefully free up some time for a chat.

Perphaps we should get some WSF caps so we know who's there!

Also, I'll probably fish in the river side of the point, from the concrete

Yep we are fishing a match the next day, are you with us Faz at Pakefield??.

Are you fishing the Harbour on an Ebb tide?

Shortcaster
26-02-2007, 00:11
Hi,
Should also mention that I'm not only a short caster, but a little erratic laterally also (I'm worrying about crossing others lines, here). Perhaps I'll be a huge nuisance, as the only time I've been to Felixtowe,my 6oz leads were being swept miles off to the right. I'd hate to turn a fishing session into a knitting (knotting!) one!

Any tips, apart from meeting up at Felixtowe then fishing at Aldeburgh at the said date?:g:

Are you fishing the Harbour on an Ebb tide?

Yep, I'm only a kid!!!!

Also, I'll be attempting to fish the harbour on an ebb tide, after the initial run I find I can usually hold bottom but as soon as you get anything it'll pull you round. Also, last time I was there with LL, Jake talked me into fishing next to him rather than the river which I think was a mistake as nobody had anything from the front. Also, HW is about 11:30, so after about 1:30 the river should be quite fishable. I also think the tide run helps hook the fish.

Only exception to this is that I sometimes find it fishes well around the first groynes as you head towards the town. Personally I find that the front, straight across from the car park, is better for flatties and bass.

I'm only taking 1 rod so could move about, fish the front for the first hour or so, then when the tide eases, move into the river. Also depends on the weather and wind.

if your weight doesnt hold attach a second one to a clip on the rig, i use a flat rounddisc weight if this happens to me , may bring me canoe and paddle out and drop lines for yas , for a fee of course lol

We will be starting at the top of the tide, so will be slackish current to start with. Once the Ebb gets under way It will run hard for a while to your left, then after a couple of hours will slow down a bit, eventually going back to the right as if it was on a flood again. This is because the rivers gushing out create a huge Eddy. They can also chuck out a load of weed.
The height of tides and the wind make a huge difference to how strong the tide will pull and how much weed will be there. I will probably be using 8oz weights at times.

Shortcaster, if you can't cast straight don't worry about it just enjoy yourself.

Brilliant information! I wish there were similar posts covering other venues to help the less-regular visitors. Could you add if there are any known snags/areas to avoid, and particularly (though I understand tide to tide this may vary) the most successful distances to concentrate on.

Shortcaster

mick.p
02-03-2007, 19:38
Unfortunately there are a few snags along Landguard open beach, however they are not always uncovered.
Even though this section of beach looks quite clean and open, years ago there were rusty metal grinds along there. Today there is little evidence left where they were, but i think whats left of them is what gives the problem with snags, if odd bits of them get uncovered by the tide.

The area at one time was military controlled, and the other possible cause of snags could be the old iron tracks that were laid along the beach for vehicles to run on. Most rusted away and bits got buried or washed out to the deeper water.

Sometimes there's no problem, you can fish all day with one rig, another time you could lose several.

As for distances. IF you are a very long caster in the league of Paul Kerry, there is a deep gully all along Languard area, often you will see trawlers returning to Harwich following that gully. When they pass by, it looks as if you could throw a stone at them, however, that gully is around 2 hundred + yards out at low water and even if you can cast that far it runs like a train, so it's only handy to reach it on slack tides.

Other then that, 70-80 yard casting will normally find the fish. Close to shore 20-30 yards at high tide also works well.

Hope that helps you.

The little bugger has bottled it, he's decided to go camping with the scouts instead,

No not really , he forgot that he was away with the sprouts this weekend, so if anyone wants some worm's come and see me, I'll be in the floaty suit without a hood, wearing carpet slippers, and tying rigs on the beach !

On a more serious note, I have had a look through the posts and there seems to be some differences with the the meet time, can someone confirm what time and where we are meeting?

We're meeting in the Viewpoint car park. Originally I said between 1000 and 1100
But I'll be there about 0930 if you want to pick your bait up. Then we can all shoot off in different directions to fish. I intend to fish the very end of the beach in front of the car park nearest the docks, save me walking far.
The beach to the right of the Viewpoint (looking at the sea) might be a bit snaggy and difficult to hold on the ebb but the nature reserve beach should be ok.

Nice photo, very emotive; sort of harks towards the Lunar landings/ Mount Everest/ Iwo Jima/ Amundsen. If that flag's there tomorrow, I will certainly have to salute.

Don;t make him sound like a hero, we'll never hear the last of it, he had enough trouble climbing the beach a Dungie to plant the flag, let alone Everest!:uhuh:

Bloody hell!! What is it with you lot? THE VIEWPOINT CAR PARK! It's the one at the very end of VIEWPOINT ROAD where the docks VIEWPOINT is. Go any further and you'll be in the river. The VIEWPOINT is signposted. Go to Windows Live. local and put Felixstowe in and head for the docks.

Stu (tsk!)
