Hi
I had the most amazing experience fishing at an anglers lodge near Goa which specialises in Estuary fishing (one of the only well equipped sea fishing lodge I have come across so far in this part of woods ). We trawled and shore fished, the trawling was done over reefs which yielded loads of Grouper, treville (4 – 8 lbs), snapper, Barracuda and reef cord. The river trawling yielded grouper and Barramundi – the barramundi were great and some of the guest hooked up with barramundi between 20lb – 32 lbs. We use RMG scorpions and rapalas, the RMG scorpions did very well – specially worked well with Barramundis. I have seen the log book and records and there are some huge monsters caught off the bay there eg – 120 lbs Cobia and a 100 lbs Giant treville. Posting some photos here for all to enjoy.
Cheers

Hi Dean
Sounds a great place! Certainly that Cobia's BIG - the world All Tackle record from Australia's only 135lbs.

I don't know whether you've ever had a chance to spot Cobia in the water? They're not dissimilar in the way they swim, and their basic build to Sharks to look at.

In other parts of the world they are often encountered tracking behind Manta Rays.

you right dave they look like shark when they swim, recently a guy landed a 88lbs cobia.
I notice thou that cobias lose their color quickly after they are caught. I have told thatThe big Cobia are usually caught at the lodge which is on the west coast of India near goa in april and I m going to give it a shot this april.

I'm pretty sure that you mean Durg rather than Drug but try as I might, I can't find details of the lodge on the net. Can you either post or PM me details of where it is, how you get there and what the costs are ?

I seem to remember reading on IA that it was somewhere up over the maharashtra border but that's about all I can remember or find.

I'm going to be in Goa for a couple of weeks in April and was wondering what fishing was available near to Panaji, which is where I'll be staying.

Not keen to take all my gear with me, so I was wondering what sort of trips are available where gear and bait etc.. is supplied.

This trip from Durg sounds right up my street, could you let me know how to book?

Also not sure how far Durg is from Panaji, might be too far.....

Can anybody help point me in the right direction of where best to look for fishing trips in the area?

Hi codendbuoy.

It seems that Durg is 200km south of Mumbai, which makes it a long way north of Goa.
I have contact details if you're still interested.

In Goa itself, there are a couple of boat based outfits that can take you out and their details are available through the tackle shops in the state.

Estuary fishing with lures can be good with Barramundi and Mangrove Jack being the main targets.

Probably your best source of information is indianangler.com
The site is searchable and you should have no difficulties finding accounts of where tackle shops are and where to fish.

I've also posted up some details of tactics and catches on anglersnet.co.uk which you should again be able to find by searching the site.

If you're after specific local information, either post or PM me on here and I'll see what I can sort out for you - I'm currently in Goa so it won't be to hard.

Ken

If you could please let me know specific details of anyone with a boat as I'll be there in two weeks and I'd like to get a couple of fishing trips in, if I can.

Maybe I'll bring my travel spinning rod although looking through some of the pictures on this forum I'm not sure if it's strong enough! It's a Shimano Exage 210m 10 - 30g casting weight.

A rod capable of casting 20 - 60g is about right and would balance up nicely with a 6000 size reel.
What you have is OK for chub fishing of spinning for schoolies but is gonna get monstered out here.

Don't worry if you end up bringing a slightly more powerful rod, that'll just mean that you will also have the option of fishing baits off the beach - although you'll soon get bored of catching catfish...

I'm in Panaji at the moment and will be off to the tackle shop assoon as I've finnished on the net. Will post you contact details for a local boat ASAP.

OK. The nearest outfit would be "Sea Safari" based just outside Panaji.
E-mail contact is tonyestrocio@yahoo.co.in
His cell number is 9422059303.

I've not fished with this outfit myself so any feedback would be apreciated and usefull when it comes to planning my own next trip.

Thanks Ken I'll email Tony for the boat trip and see if I can get a more suitable spinning rod for the beach.

Tony now has been in touch and has pointed me at his website for further details, which is www.goa-fishing.com just in case you or others are interested.

I've asked Tony a few questions, hope to get myself booked on a couple of trips, I'll let you know how I get on.

I have visited Tony and already seen the website. Tony works the area around grande island and Dona pula bay. I have trawled this water without a single hit. Thou Tony claims to have a half decent catch. Here are a few points I must put forwarded.
1) Firstly most of the fish caught by Tony and the others were under size and none of them were released which amount to plain murder and then they complain about drop in catches. Hence we as visiting anglers must propagate catch and release, if u do need to keep fish let be one and only for the table. They have be taught sustainable fishing by example.
2) Most of theses guys trawl over protect diving site / reefs day in and day out thus wiping out all the huge fish and eventually the gene pool. This is not told to you as most of the operators want their clients to catch something at any cost.
3) Do not encourage Harpooning at any cost as the reef around Grande and Bat island have been plague with this selective form of murdering the big reproducing fish.
4) Shore fishing on the other hand produces some astounding results and it’s a fair match between your technique / equip and the fish. Will be glad to help any angler interested in shore fish that comes to Goa.

From the above I only wish to convey that – have a good time on the waters but do it with a certain dignity, caution and respect for the sports that’s providing you with all the thrills you are here for !

cheers
Dean

hi colin
nov is a great time to visit Goa and the fishing would be perfect, get a good spinnin rod and and reel that can support 30 lbs line, some front with braid is good, also pack in some shads along with the usual set of rapplas - fire tiger series works the best.
will hook u up with a fishing guide that will support you with a boat and live bait, equip etc.
give me a buzz on 9820172430
cheers
Dean

Hi,

the angling lodge is located at a place called 'vijay durg' in maharashtra a couple of hours driving from north goa. ( 'durg' actually means fort in hindi.)

you may book the angling lodge by writing in to the contact us page on www.shunyachi.com.

The shunya properties also offer luxury bases for angling - especially lure and fly fishing from the shore - in goa itself.

I caught a 3.5 kg barramundi on light fly tackle using a dead crayfish fished just beneath the surface like a wet fly yesterday at a 'secret' goan location. Needless to say the runs and jumps were exhilarating.

Would welcome some info on barramundi flies which work under these conditions.
