Unfortunately I live in London and when I do get fishing I do not have the time to collect bait. So mainly buying to save time for fishing. Having said that I do spend some time during the summer on the Island of Arran and when there I do collect my own bait.

i buy rag worm sandeel and squid, mackerel in winter but in the summer i freeze my own down, i dig my own razor and lug and collect any crabs i use myself.
I dig my own when i want (Im lucky enough to live very near the sea). But now and then when i am going fishing at short notice i will buy some lug. Ive allways got a freezer with frozen black lug, suid and mackeral.

i started off as a kid with no money and very little tackle. if i dint collect my own bait i couldnt go fishing. the only bait i buy now is about 4 boxes of squid and 10 packs of sandeel a year.

I am off later this afternoon to dig rag for the first time in about 4 or 5 years. Should be amusing, tiring, Messy, Smelly but cheaper than buying it. Three of us fishing Sunday morning full session would be at least 2lb of rag so, £20.
Two of us digging i reckon we should do that in about 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Then ready for beer right after.
If i have time and the tide is right i will dig and collect, otherwise i will buy. I just like being outside though.

i got my own crab traps & dig lug, rag & whites also get my mussel & macky's.
only thing i buy is squid & razor, sometimes lug if i cant get 4 any when needed:)
Summertime i only boat fish so i just use live eels which i net and tank at home, winter time i mainly fish rough ground shore marks so its squid i get from local fishermen or 5lb boxes of calamari from baits direct(the bizz).
also loads of mackerel frozen from the summer (boat) or winter time a mate hand lines them for a living so i get fresh joey's.
i used to use a lot of lugworm but dont bother any more although they are good for catching small fish for fresh dead baits (conger huss),this summer i am going to work prawn poys from my boat so i can tank them too(watch this space local boys)as im gonna be selling them to anglers if all goes well:)
i generally fish larger than normal baits ie;4 whole squid or whole mackerel, you may not catch as many fish but they do tend to be bigger:)

Spot on, which I had the patience to do it more myself but sometimes the temptation to scale down and catch a doggie is just to much!
Re baits, unfortunately I generally have to buy it, I don't mind the cost but you can't beat the quality of freshly gathered local bait to where you are fishing.
In summer though I feather up mackerel, ready to use whole for bass in close when it gets dark :) Cheap and very effective

gotta say i have been collecting my own bait the last few years but that has been from the tackle shop!!!
But i did stick up a thread about digging bait in my area as i want to get back to collecting my own peeler/lug/rag and sand eel and i have even bought a fork and a spade this week!!
i collect as much as pos. i enjoy doing it and when you get results on something you've put the effort into collecting.
