Me and Dave (Danix) were bemoaning our casting ability last night, and the need we had for a bit??? of tuition.
Just wondered if any of the regulars on here felt the same, and if we could arrange some sort of mini "teach in" or whatever.
I know there are some top notch casters in the north west area who are regular posters on here, could we arrange something?
Anyone interested?
The brute force approach has run it's course, and it's time for some expert input!

Do you mean lionel? Top bloke and a bloody miracle worker. Went from hitting my feet to 172 yards in a couple of hours. I have bean meaning to get back to him to learn an earialised cast but not had chance yet.

Shouldn't this thread be in the new sub section though?

Put me down, I could do with a few tips. Perhaps if we went out at low, someone could help me with my pumping as well (1 small worm, when Dave & Phil had about 120 between them :-()

count me and my mate matt in!!!! this could be a really good idea, as there are loads of us on here who would benefit from casting lessons myself included!!

also ferdis idea of learning the art of pumping sounds good too!!

infact why not make it a "tuition day" get some local tackle dealers, rig builders etc involved then invite everyone who wants to come along and learn, would also be great to get the kids involved aswell, would raise the profile of our sport no end as well as giving us all some usefull information, a chance to meet up, and of course have a mini friendly comp at the end of the day!!

just a few ideas

Good idea, Me and a mate took a lesson from an instructor a couple of years ago just to see if we could improve our lot, because we had a " fairly good tenchnique" according to the instructor with only two hours instruction I had increased my casting distance by30%, I have just had a shoulder operation and will be out of fishing action for around three months and will be looking for instruction again to get back into swing again, good luck with your fishing and casting for the future

if we organise it properly for a low tide then we can get the casting and pumping in at the same time.....

at the moment we haven't acquired a new moderator for the north west yet but I'm sure one of the others when browsing will move it to the relevant place anyway back to the subject

wouldn't mind learning a new technique myself and adding an extra few yards to my cast as to the pumping don't do to bad and if anyone wants to accompany me anytime the invites there

will keep an eye on this as this will benefit a lot of people good idea dave and phil

Place - I'm biased but starr gate/st annes has huge open spaces and some good lug beds

by all means lads but i would suggest you do your casting as a seperate event for safety reasons. lionell uses a field at poulton, and casting on sand knackers reels and line up. the alternative is to cast into water but you will know if you are doing better but not by how far :g:

believe me you want NO dog walkers, wind surfers, curious holiday makers, nudist sunbathers or anything else where you are learning to cast.
no self respecting instructor would consider teaching where there was any danger to the public or people casting. can i make a suggestion, before you arrange some thing, go to cockerham to watch, its free unless you want to cast. the members will bend over backwards to advise you and help you and you can stay or leave when it suits you

I thought you said you wanted a salad next time, Phil? :yucky:

Just a thought, from Oldchucka's post: I would be happy casting over water - I know we all like to consider the distance, but would casting over water keep the mind on technique? I was lucky enought to spend a few hours with Dave H :notworthy, a year or so ago, and that was over water. That worked fine for me :clap2:

I guess if you picked the right tide at St Annes, with the locals to guide us, there would be plenty of room for casting and pumping. Just one thing - no way am I lugging a bloddy stove 17 miles across St Annes sands :wheelchai

like i said there's two options now open for discussion ............

option 1

st Anne's beach over sand and water friendly meet with a separate pumping session

option 2

a field casting session as a group with qualified instructor and pumping session at later date to be arranged

there's your options i could get one of the mods to poll this or just keep it as a discussion

just a thought as there's been plenty of interest

It looks like quite a few are up for this,so rather than trek up to Cockerham for the casting club meeting, where it might be difficult to get one to one tuition, how about someone comes up with a list of suitable low tide dates and we try to arrange it from there?
Given enough notice I'm sure we could get a suitably experienced instructor to attend.
Dave H has thrown his hat in as a possible attendee, so lets take him up on it.

I think st annes would be fine.

danix
04-03-2007, 23:05
I think we are looking for a low tide time of around 2pm...that way we can get the casting done in the am then try pumping pm.
There is a very large carpark on the beach at st annes with a cafe next to it.
People don't tend to venture out too far from the beach there and there are no kite surfers etc.
A halfmile walk down to the sandyacht club and you are on the lugbeds.....mixture of black and blow.

After attending a couple of casting lessons, one od them in wigan where Dave attended,I wouldn't go for a date on a beach,if you are looking to learn a few things, you will be far more comfortable on a field and therefor get more out of the lesson.Another thing,if there are a few of you going to turn up,you will be far better with an early start, because if you take one cast, time it from start to finish and include the input from your instructor to the time it takes to reel in you are looking at at least 10 mins and a big group will take even longer. The day will be over before you know it.

thanks for that mike, my sentiments exactly , but i didnt want to interfere wit h what the lads were planning, if you have been to casting yourself you will know how seriously we take safety. apart from the fact that casting on sand will knacker a reel up in no time at all

not being a killjoy but................

i don't think the lads are bothered about the tournament casting parse ,
like myself that side of the sport doesn't really do it for me and as I'm only after adding some yardage to my cast and not to compete i don't mind to much where I'm taught ,

as to sand knackering a reel up when cast over sand then wash it out properly after use then it wont my reels get washed and gear gets cleaned after every trip out and Ive an abu that's lasted 8 years being cast over sand ,and this is the first year Ive had to change my bearings in it ,

its just a bunch of lads after a bit of tuition or that's what i thought it was ?????

don't quote me on it cause someone will have a different opinion :) :) :)

I still think the beach would be ok.
I've cast over sand loads of times and not had a problem:you finger the line back onto the reel which cleans the line,so the sand aint a problem as I see it.

reply to some of you who asked by pm for lionell stead,s tel, number.and try to suggest a way of preventing the risk of damaging your reels.

this may sound odd but i think the best way to learn how to use a beachcaster is to learn how to use a fly rod , this gives you a deeper understanding of the way a rod blank works , then your able to put that knowledge to good use on the beach ,
i can see where oldchucka is coming from , hese just trying to err on the safe side and get you ( and me ) some good casting instruction ,
but i think we just wanted more of a little get together with someone who could put us right on a few points, a bit of a mini casting comp , without the competition

billy what you have put forward was very useful matey and the input was appreciated ,

but like many events that we try and organise on here we don't want it to get to big if we just have a small group for the casting then if all goes well maybe we could make it into an annual event for any new members or anyone that needs the extra bit of help

i just wanted to see you lads, enjoying yourself without the risk of getting hurt
this is an integral part of any self respecting in structors system when teaching.
i have taught more small groups large fishing club groups and individuals to cast different styles for FISHING than comp casting with a 100% safety record for years
on the fly fishing subject .ive been doing it since i was 16. with anything from a wand to a double hander spey cast an all and i agree with you.

1 / load the blank

3 / punch and point ,

just the same as fly fishing , and keep it all in one smooth motion :)

:) i do a flat pendulum, stand with my left foot sideways to the water , swing the lead forward then let it swing back , feel for the lead reaching the end of its swing then gradualy push the rod tip round in a flat arc , then once the reel is in line with the sea , its a case of pull and punch, i get a whipping sound from the rod if i do it right ( and if i do it wrong !! Hi Guys
Any chance of a newby getting involved in this .... I have been watching the thread gather strength as it's gone along (but being a "Lurker" kept quiet) and would appreciate the chance to improve and meet a few of you regular posters as well...... would that make me No. 6
Cheers
Billy

You'll see that I'm now a "Lurker" with 25 posts to my name ....thanks to the encouragement from all you regular posters.......... after my casting training I HOPE to be able to post something other than blanks!!

It was bloody lonely in that closet anyway Wilky.

car park where we are meeting - http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=...&scene=7596568

directions from m55 -
1. go to end of m55...keep in left lane
2. at the next round about bear right following signs for st annes.
3. follow this road to the very end (you will go through numerous traffic lights and past morrisons)...at the lights at the end turn left onto clifton drive.
4. Follow clifton drive all the way into st annes
5. At the junction where woolworths is on the corner, turn right, go to the end (opposite the pier) and turn left.
6. Follow the road for about 400 yds until you see a green and white beach cafe on the right. Turn right into the car park and you are there.

This is a pay and display...alternatively you can park on any of the side streets opposite the car park.

Bring wellies or boots in case it's wet under foot.

Tony - been in touch with Dave H + have made my apologies for Saturday as it seems to be getting a bit big for decent personal tuition - Im going to pay dave a visit or two maybe towards autumn, as up to then time will be in short supply and I probably wont fish the beach much til the cod come round again. Thanks for the offer though + see you around..Mark
