View Full Version : storm lures
what is the best way to use them
cheers
Are you asking about the soft swimmer shad type lures?
From the shore I use a 10ft spinning rod (rated 40 - 60g) and anywhere from the just under the surface (fast retrieve) to bouncing them slowly along the bottom. Depends on what species I'm after and how clean the sea bed is. Even used them under a bubble float in snaggy marks. Sink and draw, vary your winding speed till you hit fish.
On a side note I poped out to my local tackle shop today to buy some in the perch pattern for pike and discovered that Diawa now sell "Dictator Sonic Shad Lures" which are nearly identical for half the price.. Bought 2 packs, like 'em.
Anyone else seen these?
Hope I guessed right on the lure type makgas, if not please ignore.

Makgas
Either fish them exactly as you would a Shad (on a flying collar)
Or use the same rig, but shorter trace (18" to 5 feet) as a hopper for Cod
Or simply tie them on and fish them (use a swivel) all but freelined just as you would a plug.
All methods work very well in different situations.

how far can you cast these light thingies with a rod like that??? I have the same class and tried to lob it in but the storm lures appear to light to cast them like that. I have to tie a flying collar or fish with heavy float...

They'll cast 40 or 50 yards in fair conditions if fished like a plug.
I use them both boat and shore fishing and they are first rate if livebait is not available.

My bad, checked my rod. (RT Steelhead) Rated 20 - 60g. I use the 10cm shad type which weigh 27g. Have a leadhead already inside them, cast like bullets on 12lb Ultima F1 mono and FS reel.

I use the eels with a shovel shaped lead lifter head on a very light Shimano 9ft spin rod and the things whiz out and fast retrieve. Not has as much success with the weighted shads in saltwater but great on the Severn and Teme for the toothy predators ! In fact one of the ways I have made use of weighted ones I dont really like is use them on the bottom of feathers instead of lead, works like a fish chasing fry.

Even better if you add a float on top if like me you are a smoker. When the fags starting to burn my fingers on the retrieve and I stop cranking for a while it stops me catching rocks, handy for working all the high tackle loss areas that them big stiky silver things lurk.
Macky murderer, well I hope thats one up for a basher ! LOL

The Tempest Eels work well for the Pollock on the south-west coast of Scotland. This is the way i have foun best to rig them; tie a size 4/0 Kamasan B940 to a 3ft length of 20ld hooklink (mustad akaya or amnesia is ideal as it needs to be stiff but supple), to the other end tie on a strong swivvel (mustad diamond eye sz 10) small and 69ld b/s! Thread the sandeel onto this and bring out so that the hook eye sits just inside the eel. Next thread a 1 or 2oz egg sinker onto your main line (12-18ld depending on the ground) and add a 5mm bead to stop knot damage. Tie this onto the trace you have made and away you go. this can also be used for rigging up shads for casting out from the shore.
