Maggots

As a seasoned freshy i have used maggots in all their forms to catch
vertually all that swims in the Thames,but having found sea angling
as my new pastime im intrigued if this humble bait is even considered.
I have only seen/read 2 bits of info re the above............
A John Wilson vid.where he uses maggots to catch mullet/Bass in the surf
in Dorset.....ie......where flies have blown on rotting sea weed and the
incoming tide has washed the hatch into the sea,where the fish wait
fot them.to be fair it didnt show him having much success with float tackle
but im sure the principle is correct.

A Dorset article similar to above where anglers use maggots for bait off the
rocks at Portland Bill above kelp beds that are revealed at low water,
float fishing again for the Mullet/Pollack/Bass that hide below the cover.

Im assuming these must be quiet inlets/bays as ive seen the tide race there
and it dont shout"feed maggots"........that said i would be interested to know
if any other fellers have tried em as bait at their local venues and what results they had......if any.
I understand "Scent" is the biggest factor is sea angling but just wondered in
clear water conditions if fish could be roused into a frenzy with the introduction
of large numbers of maggots.

Im sure float fished in clear water fish would have a look and probably attack them when they see them moving or attack them anyway :)

seen the fish after the maggots myself along the glamorgan coast whilst sea fishing, may have a go this summer, its like feeding time at the zoo.

I read recently of a bass & mullet angler using a piece of tiny carrot-shaped coloured ethafoam to imitate a maggot (in the absence of any), as the fish were feeding on the seaweed fly maggots, as described below.:secret:

Well known fisheries biologist Mike Ladle is your Dorset maggot man, uses them for mullet but pulls the odd big bass on them too. Uses artificial ones on fly gear, sounds fun to me. Suspect you may find out more if you Google him?

that was the days when flounders were caught as far up river as yarm. a freind used to win his fresh water club matches catching small flounders among the roach etc.

Not quite Maggots but a friend bought some vacuum packed casters over once and we used them here on a half days fishing and they were absolutely deadly !

The only problem we had was getting through the smaller stuff,but Bream in particular went bananas for them.

If i could buy maggots here im convinced id have one a chuck only trouble is no one sells them. Ive often thought about "blowing" my own,but im not too sure on how to do it and the Mrs probably wont like the idea of rotting steak lying out next to the pool in 75 degree heat !

easy mate, hang a fish or meat above a bucket with bran in and a riddle or large seive on the top, instant maggot farm. deadly 4 mullet used in conjunction with bread groundbait

So the "Maggy" does get a mention in sea angling,role on summer
im gonna attack some rock marks ive seen that would appear
to be home to some quality Mullet/Bass and the caster/chrysalis
is going to get a bashing too.
As for Lead/ swimfeeder rigs am going to give the Flounder a feed too.
and any sea trout that wanna play.
will report back after some sessions...!!!!

After a fair chunk of last summer trying to catch mullet in the Blackwater estuary without success I have been reliably assured that Flyfising is good but float fished maggotts are deadly, just waiting for the sunny weather and the still days when those pesky mullet are laughing at me again to give it a try.
