I have a friend off to Teneriffe on holiday. He was asking about the shore fishing. Has anyone had any experience.

spent the post new year period in la gomera, a neighbouring island to tenerife. I did some lure fishing from a breakwater that divided the harbour from the beach area & blanked miserably. however, on a stroll into the harbour I spoke to a dutch bloke that lived on the island six months of the year. he said he'd observed the locals & the only methiod that consistently produced results was float fishing with livebait, hooked through the tail. I watched him in action. first he caught the livebait, a small silver fish called 'boga'. he caught these on bread, using a small stick float & small (16?) hook like you would for roach etc. when fishing for these boga you also catch lots of brightly coloured fish, which are no good apparently. so only the little silver jobbies... then using a sliding float, at a distance of about 2 metres from the hook, he just lobbed the thing out into the harbour & waited. the 'boga' swam around the area & it was just a question of waiting for the attack to take place. I asked him about species, but he only knew the dutch names for the fish, but I surmised they were things like barracudas, wahoos, tunas, gars & other exotic predators like dorados (dolphin-fish?), jureles (jacks?) etc; undoubtedly, if you know the marks, lure fishing from the rocks & beaches can be very effective. or alternatively, going out on a charter for some deep sea fishing. try this website for info:- http://www.dotsytoo.com/pesca.cfm?idioma=esp

Just adding to Finn's points excessive over-development of the tourist infrastructure has albut ruined the inshore fishery. And watch out 'cos in some places you'll see discharges of raw sewage.

The other species that your friend might encounter is a Bluefish. I can't remember what the Spanish name for them is but they're a member of the Jack family with TEETH and ATTITUDE.

And whilst Dorado will very occasionally venture inshore those, together with Wahoos and Tuna are more likely to be encountered offshore.

I suspect if he's going with that intention he might well be wasting his time. However some of the boats do specialise in taking tourists out and, if there're no game species around, they bottom fish in very deep water for big rays and things like Conger eels, or Shark fish. It's really a case of wandering around the marina and seeing what they've been catching - they tend to bring most things in to 'attract' the next day's clients.

yeah, I echo PJ's words about pollution, overdevelopment in gran canaria & tenerife etc; however, on the westerly islands of el hierro, la gomera & la palma, it's very low key & it's still possible to find pristine areas. the bluefish in spanish is 'anjova' or 'chova', piccie attached. definitely a teeth & attitude fish. they tell me they're explosive. can be caught on surface lures & live mullet/boga, apparently, are a killer bait for them... those 'sharks' that operate from ports like puerto rico in the south of GC are exactly that. much better to contact a reputable online outfit, so you can see testimonials, feedback etc;

I run a charter boat here in Tenerife www.biggamefishingtenerife.com we do a mixture of Trolling and bottom fishing if you fancy a fishing trip let me know.
Regarding shore fishing its not bad as you will see a lot of locals all along the coastline and they catch many varietys,such as Sea Bass or the spanish name is Lubina, Lizard fish,Boga which is used to catch barracuda,there is also some trigger fish,and bluefish,also be carefull there is also some weaver which will give you a nasty sting and very painfull.
