I find it such an awkward bait to use

prefer cleaner baits like sandeel, mackeral or herring

Keep it frozen in a cool box or bag and thaw it in your hands or sea-water as required and it is the cleanest bait since sliced bread IMHO.

I dont mind using squid m8. Messy bait for deffo though. I always have a wet cloth to try and keep my hands clean. I remove the head bind the body and slip the hooks through. After that I hook the head on and bind again.

the other way I like to use them is to open the squid up and put two or three lugg/ragg worms in and bind it up making a sausage. It's a great bait for a pully pennel rig!

But yeah! wet cloth at the ready.

p.s. I also head and tail sand eels and sausage them up inside for the pennel.

Got to agree with most of the above, great bait but I rarely use it cos it does stink a bit even if the freshest you can get. Actually to be honest I rarely use any fish baits cos they all stink, maybe I'm just a messy sod and should stick to lures or something!

wear surgical gloves if you dont like getting your hands covered in juices, stops them smelling of mackarel as well and lets you eat your snack without chocking on the smell.......:)

Squid is one of the best all round baits there is. If you are worried about the mess:blink: take a towell with you and some hand cleaner.

lots of people use these, you can find hundreds left on chesil, presumably by people who don't want the smell in their car if they took their rubbish home.

I tried that and found I was getting through a pair per bait up. Also you try and hold an angry King Rag with them, they bite through the rubber.

Then I came up with a brain wave.

Use bare hands to bait up with and put on the gloves when you want to eat. Works every time.

An old sea angler once gave me a tip which has stood me in good stead over the years. He said, "whatever bait you are using, take a piece or two of it and rub your hands in it before you start baiting up. It will hide the smell of tobacco and other things which can put the fish off". He also had his sanwiches individually wrapped in tinfoil so he never had to touch the food with his fingers.
