I was on a charter last month with a guy just back from Norway, All I can say is big and Heavy, Telegraph poles for Rods, Wire for Line, listening to this guy, they were fishing 300 ft plus deep with big lures and 10lb dead bait's, not my idea of fun, but fill your boots.

He-he, sounds like he's told you about the extremes. Normal fishing is 30-50 lbs rods and size 4/O reels with braided line, but we normally fish to 600-1000 feet, yes. This equipment is also what is used in Northern Norway, only with heavier terminal tackle to cope with the large fish. Never heard of anyone using 10 lb deadbait, but a 2-3 lb coalfish or a 10-12 inch shad is fine for big cod (30 lb+), large coalfish (25 lb+) or big halibut (100-400 lbs :) ) Only fishing I know where one uses as heavy tackle as you describe is when fishing for Greenland shark. The current Norwegian record on rod is 1708 lbs.
I use a Shimano Beastmaster Standup 30-50 and a Tica Team 30 WTS loaded with 1200 yds of 50 lb braid for fishing in extreme deep water, have fished to over 2000 feet. Nothing interesting on the hooks, though. :(

Three of my friends went to Rost in Lofoten/Northern Norway in the beginning of August, and both the weather and the fish were as kind as they come. See photos of some of the fish on top of this page:
http://www.fiskersiden.no/forum2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10562&whichpage=3
All fish were taken on clean/baited pirks, the largest cod took a 3 lb coalfish already on the pirk. The biggest cod on these photos are 45 lbs, the largest coalfish 37 lbs. The halibut just over 50. Must add that they had luck with everything, and most of the time the weather and finding the fish can be challenging.

a group of freinds went to norway about may or june this year. i think they fished for three days, fishing a competition.
the heaviest fish was only 1.1/2 lb, and that was from all species.
i think to get large fish you need to be in the right part of norway and at the right time of the year.
they were in southern norway.

Hi Bearskin. Where exactly are you going and what do you want to catch?
Southern Norway is a wonderfull destination for a family holiday with a bit of fishing. But it is definatly not a fishing destination.
Robert
in northern norway, may, june, july and august are best months to fish there, if you ask some tips from someone who have been there, you can't be disappointed
